    Had some friends over for Xmas today and we were discussing how awful it was to lose so many amazing musicians this year. We went on to a broader conversation about the dead musicians we missed the most, and I brought up Jason Molina, who no one had heard of.
    I put my 10th anniversary copy of Magnolia Electric Co. on my turntable and proceeded to go on at length about how prolific his career had been, his simply astonishing talent for songwriting and the devastatingly tragic circumstances surrounding his passing. At the end of the evening, my friends left with a newfound interest in one of this generations greatest, yet one of it's most criminally underrated, songwriters.
    Afterwards I sat and reminisced over his career, watching live performances here on RUclips. This particular video came up in the side bar. I must say that it's so nice to have this little peak behind the curtain at Jason's personality and process. Jason Molina was a tremendously talented individual and it breaks my heart that he was taken from this world far too soon. I am so grateful for all of the music he gave to us and I hope that his music will continue to spread and find new appreciation for generations to come.

I have found that most people I know who like his music (and it's not a lot, maybe a select few that really get it) have been through some REAL serious shit in this beautiful tragedy we call life.

    I said this on another song but I'll say it again... I just discovered Jason a couple of years ago.... He hits me where I live and yes where it hurts. I wish I discovered him earlier. I would have hitchhiked to go see him... I am somewhat of a guitar player and writer
    I'm actually trying to quit drinking right now but every time I put his music on I .. drink.... Well not every time but he puts me in the mood
    Peace and love to all Jason Molina lovers!!!!!!!! Also I'm really grateful that he put out so much music in a short time. So I can kind of get to know him!!!

    • @jgwire
      @jgwire Год назад +2

      Hey man, thanks for your post. I'm a recovering alcoholic, but I have the opposite reaction. His songs make me SO grateful that I'm NOT in the mood of the songs: Blind drunk --- only his poetic ways make it sound "romantic" -- though I've never heard him glamorize or even mentioned alcohol in any of his songs -- Besides the music, Jason's story is a warning about what too much alcohol will do to you. I understand that this music would trigger you to drink , even though he's NOT singing about the pleasures of hard drinking. HE singing about the sorrow and pain of the disease of alcoholism. IN AA -- which he needed -- we were told to stay away from people, place and things that trigger us -- if Jason's music triggers you, and you DO drink -- you' may be unaware that you are romanticizing his disease.I suggest giving Jason a break -- he's not going anywhere. Been sober 10 years and it's a great life -- if I can accept reality. Thanks JMHO>

      Oftentimes it's the withdrawal that kills. He was drinking up and over a 1/2 gallon of whiskey per day at his worst. He was again struggling to be sober at the end, and the organs went into revolt, and he hemorrhaged...and that's it. :(

    Le canzoni di Jason sono tristi, sì, ma sono anche sentimento, vita pura. Con i suoi riff senza tempo, lunghe melodie di voce e chitarra. Per molte persone, queste canzoni hanno segnato, come una colonna sonora, ore piene della propria vita, un balsamo di guarigione dai momenti di infelicità e tristezze inevitabili. Io sono una di quelle. (cit and autocit)

    "I loved hearing Jason Molina sing. He was a genius at turning a phrase and making it into something more than the words in it. Jason was almost supernaturally prolific, and several times I watched him write an album's worth of songs in a weekend, recording them on the spot. Much of his recorded output with Magnolia Electric Co is the evidence of him and the band playing his songs for the very first time...

      from the clip around 4:00 and the song after that it just looks like drop d
      i think it's a bit, making drop d seem all mysterious and complicated
      or maybe he wrote in a different tuning and then played it normally i don't know

    Molina doesn't strike me as a hardcore alcoholic. Besides the pasty skin, he doesn't seem to have the physical signs. He doesn't look like a guy who was in the process of drinking himself to death. I miss him. It just doesn't seem fair.

      He drank less during the recording of the album and the 2 week tour preceding it. After that he fell apart again and never recovered. Source: www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/jason-molina-songs-ohia-magnolia-electric-co-secretly-canadian/Content?oid=15163643

    • @Pumapro
      @Pumapro  10 лет назад +3

      The song is called "This House." and you can hear it at 3:25 - 6:25 during the doc...
      "It's not on the album. It was part of the batch written for the record I think & we'd been playing on tour. Or it might have been written during rehearsals. I have a recording of us demo'ing it at practice; not sure of the date." Pete Schreiner
      "It's in dropped D. We played it on that 2008 tour and would, at those shows, go into "John Henry Split My Heart," which is why that "John Henry" riff appears at the end of the song. Unreleased." Jason Evans Groth
      While "This House." surely appears on many live bootlegs, this documentary has the only studio version available.

      Hello fellow Ben :) I'm not sure who owns the rights. Probably Secretly Canadian and/or Molina family.
