Hindsight 20/20 and all, but watching this now it seems so obvious he was desperately searching for a way to live... for some kind of peace. I'm so sorry he wasn't able to find it. He will be missed.
Man, sometimes there's just as something in the air. Other day I wondered if David was up to anything new. Then a few days ago I learned of Purple Mountains. Now, today, of his passing. David you are loved by many.
It feels less special without you David! So glad i found your music.... you left a huge impression on me and tens of thousands of other people, and you will always be soooo underrated on how important a man you were!!
Sorry but I love you Cassie too. You were the beauty, heart and musician integral to Silver Jews. The love between you and David was obvious, beautiful. Keep giving bright rays to people and environment around you.
Some people aren’t equipped with the necessary armor required to navigate this world without it tearing and wearing down some vulnerable part of themselves down to the point of permanent breakage. Unfortunately these people are often the most beautifully creative gentle souls which makes the damage that much more sad.
Seeing a man I admire so much now walking around my city when I was alive knowing I will never meet him or have any form of conversation with him haunts me.
Thank you so much for posting this incredible documentary. Silver Jews and David were amazing. I found myself crying, knowing that David had such deep sadness that couldn't be erased by anything. I suffer from horrible depression and his songs have been a sense of comfort for me. RIP David
I have the same thing you have. And I’m so sorry you have to experience it. Just keep on pushing through. I’m not gonna say the usual “Things will get better!” and all. I don’t like making promises when I cannot be 100% certain. I will say though, as long you keep a positive attitude, things often do get better. One thing I love to do is Google jokes and read them every chance I get. Even the corny ones I love. Try to find humor and laughter. It’s no joke that laughter is the best medicine. (Sorry for the pun! Couldn’t help it 🤪) I want to offer you my email to make sure you have someone to talk to (if you wanted ), but I feel really creep doing that. Lol So, that’s up to you. I just know what absolute HELL depression feels like so I like to be there for even a complete stranger if I can. Especially someone who loves Silver Jews like me - David Berman is such a huge influence on my own songwriting. He was no doubt one of the greatest poets in the history of music. ❤ Anyway, keep on keeping on (as John Lennon said). You’re far stronger than you think and you deserve to be happy!!! Cheers! 😊
I haven’t listened to the silver Jews in years last time I heard a single song was probably when I was 17. But today it popped up on an old play list and I’m now going on hour 3 of cleaning my apartment and listening to American Water
I've read about this film a long time ago, but an OK Purple Mountains song made me miss the Silver Jews so much - i looked it up. Good stuff - David Berman's a genius and these 2 shows were some of the highlights of my (musical) life.
When David was breaking down while reading from that book, I wondered if this was a sadness for what has happened the Jewish people, or more a personal sadness about his own life....
I mean who knows. But he was reciting the shema (according to an informed commenter) which I’m sure he’s heard a million times and is imbued with all sorts of associations. Man but who knows.
5:05 'Secular Pets' would be a great name for a band. Thanks David. I never knew you, I like a lot of your music, I only read yesterday that you had died in an old edition of a music magazine. This is a lovely document of a tiny portion of your rich and complex story. Travel well wherever you are travelling.
I love how religious he is. I'm not Jewish, got saved in jail but I think it's all the same. David has some awesome perspectives he gained from the Torah that I'll never gain from the Bible. What a cool dude RIP.
You can though. There is a mystical side to Christianity that has been largely cast to the side. Check out some of the gnostic gospels. And what he gleaned from the Torah you can do son with the Old Testament (first five books). Don’t think he had some special religiosity you can’t attain. Unless ur a real honest to goodness Hollywood Exec, I’m that case ur going to hell.
@@lucassimmon2297 gnostic gang rise up. I think another interpretation of David's life could be that what destroyed him was something that he could never bring forth and accept. The guy was obviously very messed up. Doesn't mean he couldn't pen an evergreen. Would never take life advice from Berman, but what an amazing poet! He seemed confused more than evil. But had he remained secular, who knows if he would have made it even so far in life. Silver lining (no pun intended)
Always loved everything david ever did. RIP to a great poet. He was obviously searching for some kinda of inner peace. Too bad he died before he realized that religion is a terrible virus.
It's funny that people take the time to comment randomly about musicians they *don't* like. What do you get out of this? If you don't like an artist, just don't listen to them. Or do you get off on trolling? I'm genuinely curious. Because you really come across as a douche bag, especially doing this around the time of his death.
