I don't think it ever will. When you know the sound of bands at the calibre of The Beatles, CCR, The Rolling Stones, etc it's very easy place Magnolia Electric Company right up there with the White Album. I think Jason Molina proved that idiocracy is in full swing here in America when people like him get swept under the rug.
I seen Jason live in 2005. Spoke with him after the show. The most down to earth musician I ever met. It's always a pleasure to listen to those classic albums. Rest easy.
I just discovered Jason 3 days ago. I have never become so obsessed with a catalog of music before in my life...song after song after song of pure gold....all so god damned good it hurts. How the hell this guy flew under my radar all these years is beyond me. We truly lost an immeasurable treasure when we lost Jason Molina.
I saw him play live in Lleida, Spain, a few years ago... And at that time I was not fully aware of the value of what I was seeing and hearing. 'Obsession' is a perfect word to describe what I've felt for his music over the years...
Last December I was revisiting a note I read about him the monday following his death, that note was the reason I got more into his music, anyway, I'm going to put an extract of that note cuz' i guess the journalist behind it was pretty much right. "His songs are filled with warnings about disconnection and disaffection that weren’t heeded, and in the end, the messenger drowned in the air around him. part of me felt that the world should have taken better care of Molina. And yet, what was the alternative? A Jason Molina who was broadly embraced? That wouldn’t have been Molina at all. He occupied the margins because the center was abhorrent. He was able to be genuinely poetic because his broadcasts reached such a small number of people. Believe in the idea that almost no one understood him and that’s the most important thing to understand."
Perfectly said. Jason was a Genius child and a genius child is like a poem and a poem is like the truth and not many people like poetry...Once again thank you for sharing.
Jozz, beautiful, thoughtful words from both you and the journalist. I recently came upon Jason's songs, and they've been so moving and helpful. Devastating to learn he died so young. Makes me think of my current friend struggling with the disease and not wanting to succumb to the pull of disconnection and disaffection.
There’s something very unique about his voice that I can’t quite articulate. The lyrics are sung as though they’re meek but there is real power behind his timbre.
the advantage of having a child later in life is that they introduce you to great music (and you can share yours too ;) ) I recently was introduced to this amazing band/man/his music - Love his lyrics and actually cried after listening to the Lioness knowing that he had passed away - what a voice, his lyrics are well you know -
oh how I wish I would have known about him then. I would have been 20 years old and getting into playing music myself and I live 3.5 hrs from Birmingham. In another life I suppose.
I didn't find out until about a year after his death in 2013. I was lucky enough to see him play live in September of 2005. I'm currently reading a biography about him Call 'Riding With the Ghost' by Erin Osmon. I'd recommend it.
@@morganhymancomedy hi there, yep pure gold jason 🤩 and yep ‘riding with the ghost’ by erin osmon is great! I’m reading it now. Good vibes to ya al from sunny Italy… and under JM star 💫
Wish we could hear some of those songs that didn’t make it to the albums. I love this performance. I think Jason (and Magnolia Electric Co in general) sound much better in live performances than on any of their in-studio albums.

Jesper Sahner Pedersen I found him with Songs:Ohio and followed most of Magnolia Electric Co. too. I never saw interviews like this with him until after he passed. I read that he drank himself to death. He doesn’t seem like the self-destructive type. I think the world was just harder for him to be in it that most be a of how deeply he felt things in a deeply flawed world. So talented and missed. Do you have an article or video you’d recommend to sum up what happened to him? Thanks
He struggles to get the words out a bit, but he's well-spoken. Interesting that his lyrics are so excellent. I sympathize--I'm a writer but I have trouble communicating off the page. Wish I'd been able to meet Jason. Thanks for sharing yourself with us, dude.
Neil Young turned me on to these guys. Love this song. Who is playing the lead on the Tele-ish guitar with the fro? Wiki search confused me. Whole band is great.
I have an O'Doul's bottle in the fridge. First 6 pack I bought, EVER, after one night of Songs Ohia bingeing. I drank one. Taped the name "Jason molina" on one. Nope. The whole 6 pack is in there. One is named Jason Molina. Alcohol is a worse addiction than any drug. Trust me. I thought having that bottle in my fridge would do something. Nope.
That's what's wrong with music today. He oozes talent yet is rather obscure. So glad I came across his music even though he's gone, a legacy will continue.
at some point, his songwriting will be appreciated for how great it was. He was definitely on another level.

Maybe the best songwriter in the singer-songwriter era spanning the 1960's to the present.
Totally agree with this
I think the issue is that his Melodies aren’t up to par with his lyrics. That’s what keeps him from the heights of Elliott Smith or Sparklehorse.
We're all on another level. He was the rain.
" i know when it's done. Like popcorn".
I ll keep that line in my head while composing

My favourite song ever. Happy 47th Jason. Always remembered.
I just want to hug him and tell him I love him.
He is such an amazing soul ♥️ 😢 and song writer! Rest In Peace Jason Molina We haven’t forgotten you !!!! 🌌
me too. i miss him.
I had the same thought....the exact same thought ☹️
What a sweet soul
Rest in eternal peace, Jason. Your music has helped a bunch over time, and I will never forget that so long as I live.

well put. such confident writing in a meek guy. my kinda dude TBH

He wrote "Hammer Down" in 3 hours.
i miss Jason, and the band, incredibly at times.
Got to see them live in NYC a few times back in the mid 2000's
So jealous
I discovered Molina in 2009 right after Josephine was released. I read a review, sought it out and fell in love with his art. His death floored me.
Jason Molina forever

cant believe ill never get to see him live
Great interview. RIP Jason..
What a great musician he was
What a beautiful man x
more people should know about him!
Maybe not, maybe not many people knowing about him is great
He passed away? Oh god no..? What the fk.. spent years looking for this man's voice and when I find it he's gone 😢😭

I think I discovered him a bit too late...unfortunately
It's never too late to enjoy his music. He made a lot of it in his short time.
same :/
I wanted to tell him how much I loved him. But I saw him once and didn't. It's good (Neil Young fan) that at the very least you hear him.
He's a pirate for the 8⃣ point star and a friend to the wisp of the wipers in the rain

Yeah :D
Aerosmith like AC/DC was a killer hard rock band in the ‘70s before becoming a parody of themselves later ..

Neil Young
Reminds me of Sheldon Cooper from BBT
Seems like he commited slow suicide via alcohol.
