I Regret What I Said About Our Cabin Upgrade - What Was I Thinking?

- We’ve hit a massive milestone in our cozy cabin project, and I couldn’t be more excited! Today, we’re installing our brand-new, custom bronze wood windows, and trust me-you won’t believe how much they change the look and feel of the entire space. These aren’t just any windows; we’ve gone all out to bring in as much light as possible, making sure the cabin doesn’t feel dark and cramped like so many others. And the best part? These windows were specially cut by hand, with an astonishing tolerance of just 1/8 inch, thanks to the craftsmanship of our good friends at Meadowlark Log Homes.
But that’s not all-there’s a unique twist to installing windows in a log cabin. We had to account for log settling over time, which means our installation method is anything but conventional. I’ll show you the ingenious system we’ve put in place to ensure these windows stay perfectly square, even as the cabin shifts over the years.
And in true homestead fashion, we faced a big decision: should we waterproof the window openings or not? I spoke with a seasoned contractor who’s been building homes here for decades, and his surprising advice led us to save both time and money. I’ll explain why we skipped the expensive waterproofing membrane and why it’s the right call for our dry climate.
This is one of the biggest steps we’ve taken to get the cabin buttoned up, and it’s all coming together fast. From the stunning awning window above Mrs. W’s kitchen sink to the perfect casement windows designed for maximum airflow, this install marks a major turning point. Plus, with the mini-split system already in for heating and cooling, things are moving full speed ahead!
In this video, you’ll see:
The installation of our game-changing custom windows
A look at the intricate log cabin construction and how we handle settling
Why we decided to forgo waterproofing and what it means for the cabin
A sneak peek at the awning window over the kitchen and how it’s designed to handle wind and ventilation
The role our mini-split system plays in keeping the cabin comfortable all year round
There’s so much happening right now as we race to get the cabin fully enclosed before winter hits. We’ll be installing the door next and then moving on to the shingles, the handrail upstairs, and even more exciting projects. The cabin is finally starting to look like a real home, and we couldn’t be more thrilled!

I always leave the plastic on the windows until the job is 99.999% complete. It saves from having to wash and scrape the window glass.
Good to see that your sense of humor is still intact after dealing w/comment section. You handled that Caulk like a Proho,Cody. I hope and pray that you and the family have a wonderful weekend.
I appreciate that
@@wranglerstarthe sentiment is mutual,Cody.🙏🏻
Caulk is your friend…..😊
@@wranglerstarhappy sabbath Cody!
I'm loving the return of long form content. I cant wait to see the finished cabin, it already looks so good. We will keep your family in our prayers as always, enjoy your weekend!
nice to see mr jiraiya get some camera time, seems like a cool guy
@@hinnomtx we all need a friend like him, I try to be a friend like he is.
Cody you are blessed beyond reason. The views from the porch and windows are something that mpst of us could only dream of.
That along with permanent water running through your property is God sent.
Although we have some very different views since you started your channel, yes I was there at the start when your big boy was a toddler, I have seen God bless you and your family consistently and richly. You must be doing something right.
I HATE how so many manufacturers add a branding sticker that you have to spend forever peeling off your brand new window. Kudos to this manufacturer for using a few brain cells and adding it to their protective cover that peels off easily in one clean swipe.
So as a builder for 40 yrs. Times change. I do t use that name brand on the east coast ( cape cod) we use Anderson. Per their specs and class . They want the window opening caulked directly on the wood frame or plywood, just as you did.
I would have used/ made a lead pan on the window sill first , so any moisture that does get in would roll back out over the logs
After installation, go around the window flange ( nailing fin) with " 3m exterior all weather “ flashing tape, start at the bottom, then overlap the sides , then the top overlap .
I’d trim it with cedar and use stainless nails . Great job and beautiful cabinets. 🙏
Thanks for explaining your decision about the waterproofing. My keyboard trigger finger was feeling itchy. ;) Like anything, the answer is always "It depends"
Don’t caulk the bottom of windows. Only the top and sides need caulking. Leave the bottom uncaulked for any moisture to have a drainage point.
Mrs. W needs a planter under the awning window for fresh herbs.
Cody, if anyone gives you any grief about not finishing things, just do like I do. I tell them I have a black belt in Partial Arts!
I know that YT encourages creators to make shorts so that we can all get collectively more stoopid. But I really enjoy your long-form videos. Keep it up!
The cabin gets this Northern Midwest man's approval 👍🏻👍🏻
Cody, so much wisdom here. Not only is there a simple pleasure in handling a tool properly to get the job done, but I dare anyone to find a more satisfying pasttime than properly laying down just the right amount of caulk.
I'm sure you'll be fine since you are a Proho. But, in new home construction, I leave the plastic coverings on until final deep clean. Helps protect from scratches throughout finishing, and keeps them clean!
My OCD is in overdrive seeing your right suspender strap being twisted. Windows look great!
Dont forget to put bars on the windows to keep the bears off the moose, elk & deer hanging, cooling & aging for processing. Rocky mtn guy advice!
"300 days of sunshine"
My envy is immeasurable.
We could use a lot less sunshine here in Ohio. Fortunately, it looks like rain next week.
@@sociopathmercenary so no more cat barbecues for at least a week?
We get 300 days of rain here in Alaska.
300 days of sunshine to live on the west coast? I hear it's pretty warm in Hell aswell
I absolutely hate the sun. Burning hot and making me dark easily. Wish it was always cloudy.
Very cool little cabin, and the chainsaw cutouts are insanely precise lol
Us members are above the caulk joke…right?

One would believe but all of us know that it's still funny within us
What would the lord do ?
Cody, showing us how to build a Missile defense system to protect us from our greatest ally. Dream video
Our greatest ally always puts America's interests ahead of their own, We are so lucky to have such a friend,
@wranglerstar
Oh brother, we are so blessed.
As someone who didn’t for 2 months, and found them then impossible to remove, peel those stickers on the glass ASAP.
Even if you then re-stick them to paper and blutack them back on the glass 🙂
I agree with you about the window water proofing. It certainly doesn't hurt. But your call makes 100% sense. We overbuild houses to the nth degree now a days. Some common sense never hurts.
Nice thick caulk. Indeed it is sir, indeed it is.
So well thought from location to material. Beautiful job thus far. I am sure I am not the only one excited to see the finished project. Love and gratitude to all!
I have beautiful views at my house but your views blow mine away. It really is coming together and I look forward to seeing the completed project.
Big Overhangs are a windows best friend!
Love the view of Mt Fuji.
Great work on the windows.....
It's all coming together. Great to follow along with this build, thanks Mr. W.
Only a west coast man could handle a caulk like that, enjoyed the video.
Great craftsmanship. And inspiring for the regular joe to give something a go.
With all the fantasy dwellings, Wranglerstar has basically turned into Marie Antoinette. I suppose I’m saying that because I’m a little bit envious. If I had the land, I’d probably be building a lot of forts, too.😂😂😂
Sweet Little Cabin.
I don’t understand why half of these comments are criticism. Your doing a great job
Fantastic looking windows! The Saw work around the outside looks factory made! Great Skill!
At least there is a space here for good old fashioned humor. Lay er on thick. Act accordingly 😂
Ditch silicone and use clear construction sealant, or sometimes called liquid flashing. Better for every application.
That view is awesome. Nice work.
I swear Cody.. You have the best view on your property !! so Nice with Fuji in the background
Those are some beautiful windows. The Cozy Cabin is getting close to being "dried in" for the wet weather. This is such a fun project to watch, from my end anyway. Cheers.
Thank you Sir, for just being you and for all you do, thank you.
One of my most recent purchases was a dewalt caulking gun. ( that’s just the brand I’ve been with for the last 30!years, my sure the red, blue or green team make them too)
If I was just running a short little bead every once and a while I would stay with the old squeeze and drag. But if you’re on a stage of job and you’re squeezing hundreds of feet of liquid nails or caulking miles of trim or just doing a half dozen or so windows it just makes the task move along so much smoother and I find I laying it out pretty evenly too. I’ll put it in the buy once cry once category.
East coast man envies your view, sir.
Nice choice of windows, they look great.
Honest to goodness, from one West Coast man to another, this is my favorite RUclips channel. 👍
Appreciate that
was good seeing your man servant :)
You could’ve just said “ East Coast Caulk” 🗿🗿🗿
I am so fully dedicated to see this process through to the end as a viewer of the channel LOL! I understand its not my dollar or time invested but as a spectator this is not happening fast enough for me. Ive been thoroughly enjoying this cabin build.
I would have swapped the casement windows. It seems you would get better ventelation through the cabin if they opened in opposite directions.
5:47 Wow! What an amazing nature outside. Truly a great spot. Hope you get many memorable moments in here :)
Those are some beautiful windows, Mrs. W did a great job!
West coast man “very excited” 😜
I just realized this cabin was not made for your kids... you are giving your house to your kids and living smaller so the next generation can flourish....
You are a godly man and a rare breed.
Even if the window framing does start to rot after 20+years, it seems like it would be easy enough to pull the window off and repair it.
Check the height of all the window frames from the inside. This assures your trim lines up.
I really miss the old homestead.
Home time has a series of all the differences between log houses and a regular home sometime was a Sunday morning dying show years as go !
The SweatLoaf Necklace! Can we get Sweatloaf on a ballcap or T-Shirt??
Beautiful!
Toothless!
You made quick work of that; sure is nice having competent help.
I love that you think the windows is gonna be the thing that’s gonna stop the talking. 😂
*NICE THICK CAULK!!!!!*
That cabin is amazing
I’m going to also put that split mini condensation line in my prayers. Bro. You need to pay close attention to that line. I installed a spit mini in my shop back in 2021 and even with really good angles, I’m having an issue with condensation backing up into my shop.
That cabin as going to around for ever
For a cosy cabin you need small traditional windows, not huge picture windows. But it's a beautiful job
It's great to see you can be using your hand again for the big 🐓.... haha
This cabin is going to be great. I’ve got an acre lot I would love to put one on.
What species of wood are the logs?
Like you’re doing a great job putting the windows in😊
The log cabin is looking great…
Might consider that rubber tape stuff on that upper loft window, since it's a little more exposed to the weather.
Awnings are the best for environment with precip so you can still open them if it's coming down
Mr. Jeriah exist he is real 😂😂😂😂 I thought it was just Cody‘s mate believe clearly not 😂
Looks like Jack's new crib 😁😉
I just want to know how many gallons of boiled linseed oil it's going to take to properly coat the cabin.
About 420
@@furrbearrapedmycat7223 I don't think it's as big as it looks; I'm thinking 69 gallons.
@@johnmf6096 that's what she said
The log home window and door frames that I have seen always had slots for settling like you did with the utility room wall.
Love it! Will there be screens on the windows?
Yes
We have awning windows and side slide windows in my house built in 50s awning windows are great because you can leave it open in rain unless the rain is blowing sideways
It’s good to see the oft mentioned but rarely seen man servant.
American windows are fitted completely different to British, you guys have a lot of efficiency in your building processes
Need it with sheer amount we put up, seconds add up to hours and days on big projects
don't know if this was in another video or not but did you ever show a plan layout for the cabin for like your vision on furniture and location of cabs and such?
A log cabin with running water and .....A WORKING TOILET!?!?!?!?? You've gone soft on us Cody! Ssss OH Eff Teee tuh 😤😤😤😤😤😤
lol Looking awesome as expected and ty for always opening up things like this to us future PROhO's. May the Father continue to watch over and bless you and your house.
That thick caulk though haha 😂
The cabin is looking great
What is the size of the cabin? Looks good! Great work!
Mr. Jeriah has a smart hammer choice.
You might not get much rain but you sure get alot of snow. Snow melt = water
I’m just wondering why it was built so close to the road. Thanks
Static ele is real! :) Nice work, my friend!
Must be said... East coast man is impressed. :)
A doc that graduated last in med school is called, Capt or Major 😂
Those are beautiful windows.
Beautiful windows
Looking Great ! Hi Mt Fuji !
I was hoping for the Brent Hull double hung 100 year windows, this being the internet.
That looks awesome great job.
What suspender and belt system are you rocking mr proho?
You should leave the film on the glass until all the wood finishing is done.
It must smell so good in there, love that fresh wood smell.
1/8” is my reputation
I'd argue that vycror was needed. Sure that area you're in doesn't get rain, but you'll need to wash the cabin every two years as part of your stain/finish maintenance routine. We have a lot of clients whose windows and door openings leak when we wash their log home. - Madrona Log Home Repair
