Kani basami and jumping to guard. That guy was trying to destroy your knees.
Bruh I thought the same thing!
The scissor should be illegal in anything but professional. You're an asshole if you do that to people. Jumping guard to a lesser degree but it's stupid as well.
Jumping guard should be banned. Or if you want to keep it legal, then allow the slams.
True.
Agreed, slams should be allowed
100%
I'm a judo instructor in a BJJ gym... please make slams legal so I can teach daki-age... been illegal in judo since I was a kid... it'd be nice to have a use for it again! LOL
jumping closed guard should be a DQ
There should be a rule where if someone does a jumping guard, their opponent is given a chance to do 1 slam or 2 punches.
Does most of this stuff only exist because strikes aren't allowed?
@@harawulf oh yeah. Strike, slams, throws are not allowed, so people do shady stuff like jumping guard to get other people on the ground. It all depends on rules. Combat jiu jitsu allows some strikes and their grappling looks quite different.
Appreciate the commentary. Great insight at your level. Keep it up!!
Mate loving these videos and learning a lot. The inside camping video has changed my whole game!
sumie gaishi! i spelled it wrong but there are take downs and throw in bjj, stop pulling guard and throw mofos! good job on this roll mate!
I needed this 🙏🏼
Subscribed. As a white belt, this video helped me tremendously on guard passing - even more than tips from black belts. Good stuff. Keep it coming.
And I didn’t even explain anything about guard passing 🤩 maybe a bit, made this one a while ago and don’t remember 😂 stay tuned for Monday, I’ll be dropping a vid on passing brown belts as a lower belt from the same tournament 😁
Great coverage
When you do the flatten out thing. Try slide down a bit further down to his lower back and backheel with your own legs sprawling into him so you lift his legs up.
Then if you have over under grip try pull his hand with your underhook side hand. So he lies on it while you sprwal into him, then pull that arm out and lift his forehead up with that hand and your choke arm (the overhook should be ready to choke and then finish it.
Im worse case keep pulling his forhead up and look for the choke, remever in gi, you have the collar as well.
When you have your hooks in and flatten him out like you did, with the right pressure and controll this is by far the most dominant position you can have
Yes love these commentary!
Beautiful fundamentals Carson!
Carson, if not already have you done a video about competition mindset and nerves?
Great commentary bro. I learned a lot....also a 40 year old purple belt....always learning
homie should rethink his game
0:52 I’ve never heard of the concept of keeping their knees below your knees. I’m pretty sure you can get to DLR or even a deep DLR (de la x) with your knee lower than the standing person. I think what’s stopping him for entering DLR is your grips to stop him from getting the angle and your butt is low enough that there’s no room to get the DLR hook in.
Very true, I just wanted to emphasize getting the knee pushed below yours. Could’ve explained that one better 😅
That was an explosion loop choke attempt. Didn’t have enough control to lock it in, though.
Is jumping to guard legal at blue belt? Love the content. Keep it up!
For most tournaments yes 😅
Kids can’t do it, but at Grappling Industries, the adults can.
Not sure the legality by tournament but neck cranking from a flattened out position is very effective due to a lack of need to get under the chin
Jumping guard is illegal is it not at blue belt?
How long have you been a blue belt?
nice work and commenting
jump pull guard is cringe, don't care what anyone says
Definitely agree.
Dude if anyone did that in an actual street fight they'd just get hurt. How are you supposed to just jump on someone like that and just like not get your head slammed in the ground or punched? On concrete this dude would be dead in two seconds
@@totallynotadude7977News flash: this is sports jiu jitsu, both gi and no gi are full of unpractical real life stuff, cuz uhhh it’s a sport. If you want something practical you’re better off with mma, cuz then you’ll be punished for the unpractical stuff.
@@felipechaves6100 yeah it's a COMBAT sport. Pulling guard isn't combat it's just suicide. Point is invalid don't care if it's a sport you don't teach your students to LOSE a fight you teach em to win 🤷 and you simply don't know how to fight if you do this. It's not even entertaining in the slightest. This is why full contact jiujitsu exists in the first place
@@totallynotadude7977 well you just expect your students to have two functioning brain cells and understand what works for competition and what works for real life. Here in Japan most people don’t ever get into real fights so most gyms are 100% competition oriented, but in Brazil the distinction is very clear and enforced by the teachers.
If we were to be fight realistic we would need to get rid of 50% of the curriculum, since lapel guards, laço, and many other techniques are not good for anything other than competition.
Just a small tip that will make a HUGE difference when you have someone in side.
Stay away from his legs/lower body
When youre passing. Remeber that you can control his hip with you hand on the same side as you are by posting it on the ground by his hip, or you can just grab his knee if he is turning against you and just pull it straight (cause he wants to curl up like a ball and get a knee shield in, or you can force that knee to the other side making his lower body turn away from you.
Also, you can go towards north south, which you should (at least) have done rather than than getting back into his guard or him getting a knee shield.
Going to NS will block his attempt at going back to halfguard or getting a knee shield in.
(Just remeber to push his knees away from his body and keep pressure)
Luckily he turned away into turtle.
How can you be so good man
you have to have a very weal opponent to control a knee or hip with one arm...
@mugnuz from what experince are you claiming this?
How long have you been training and at what level?
When’s your match with josh beam
As a forme judoka I wonder if there are anti-passivity rules in bjj
So much info
Where's the moment of punishing guardpuller?
Winning 😂
I’m curious why you chose to take a reactive (counterattack) approach in HQ as opposed to proactively attacking. Is that a hallmark of the position, or your personal play style? And do you find that the benefits outweigh the risks?
I like to use headquarters as a safety position. It’s easy to hold and has multiple routes to attack from based on my opponents reaction. So the more they freak out or move the more openings created.
I guess the point is that I’m trying to stay calm and not expose myself while capitalizing on their mistakes.
Much different than my outside passing system where I try to initiate and force attacks / openings 👍
To add a bit, I used to play almost exclusively from HQ, but after most of my training partners started to figure out my style it was harder to find attacks from there. So that’s when I started to play more outside passing, and I use HQ as a safety position when I get entangled. From there I’ll look for those openings or back out and go around again
The grips are hurting my fingers and wrist just watching this…
Am I tripping or did that first guy jump guard as a blue belt
I hate the guard jump. Thats so dangerous/
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Becareful with that grip when you are standing to open the guard. When you stand to open the closed guard you want to be forcing the guard pullers/players hip towards the ground it neutralize their attacks and makes it easier to open their legs. By keep your grip post higher on their collar as opposed to moving it towards their hips the guard player feels no pressure on his hips and has full mobility. At blue belt you can get away with that grip higher on the lapel...as the guard players skill level increases you want to shut those hips down. Also, avoid having your knees on the ground when opening/Passing guard...your knees on the ground lowers the amount of pressure on your opponent and makes it easier for them to move. Just think about when you play guard....it's easier to sweep and sub when a knee is on the mat as opposed to when someone is tripod or hovering.
Ref looks like Vinny Guadagnino
2:35 you could have transitioned in to scarf hold, & he wouldn't be able to escape.
Grappling industries is a spaz fest
Carson, you rock ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
I’m Roman! I had no intention of trying to hurt Carson’s knees or intentionally attack something illegal lol. (For everyone who thinks I did)
Side note: Carson is definitely right that I fight very unorthodox - worked for my other matches with all subs but fundamentals always kills at the end of the day 😂
Hopefully me and Carson can scrap again, it was a fun match!
Chill with the kani basami; otherwise good for you for getting out there and scrapping.
whats with the kani basami bro
@@rondesmond7209 Yeah, I thought it was legal and apologized to Carson completely after. Appreciate it though bro
Do want to add, he did finish everyone else that day. He was also (aside from the Kano basami that didn’t damage me at all lol) playing well within the ruleset for grappling industries.
While I may agree that jumping guard can be problematic, I knew that going into the tournament and consented to fight against those techniques.
It was a good match and also looking forward to going at it again!
@@Carsahh Thank you Carson! I have upmost respect for your understanding and sportsmanship.
I’m a Judo player and learning more about BJJ. I can’t believe Kani Basami isn’t a
DQ in BJJ. He’d get a ban for that in Judo, let alone continue the match
When you say you have to keep your head past the centre line for side control what stop you getting swept over your head? I assume your thumb is inside on the collar?
Great video
A lot of things were said that were false. For example, when is the DLR players knees above the opponents? Never
Fair enough, my point was that I wanted to keep their leg stuffed down to avoid the dlr hook. However what other things did I say that were false? 😅
Who taught the guy kanami basai and quite poorly as well, it is banned for a reason and bjj practitionera should all be advised that is banned due to the damage it causes its no joke
Early today

LEARN TO TIE YOUR BELTS CORRECTLY DAMN I HATE THAT!!!! he gave you a disadvantage with out his belt....
Pulling Guard is such BS. It is bad BJJ and bad martial arts. So many BJJ practitioners like to say its effective Self Defense, well not if pulling guard is the basis of your personal fighting method. Learn to do takedowns. Lots of BJJ guys cross train in Judo to learn the take downs but then enter a tournament and pull guard from standing. In Judo its an instant penalty. They are different combat sports with different rules but I think BJJ should adopt a similar rule.
Also, in self defense fighting from your back should never be a first choice. It is an Excellent skill to have but never your first choice.
Blue belts making technique and strategy videos... bruh
I’ll genuinely fly out to wherever you’re located. PLEASE send me your gym and I’ll come out this summer
This is probably super helpful for a lot of white-purple belts. I love how arrogant you are based off belt color. Carson is probably wrecking most hobbyist purple and brown belts.belt color means nothing💯
@@Whiskydanger the moment Cole Abate stepped on the 1st place platform at ADCC trials I realized belts have almost 0 value in terms of defining someone’s skill level 😂 (I’m still quitting the day I get subbed by a white belt)
@@Carsahhthat guy who underestimate I bet he ain't even good if he thinks blue belts ain't good
