This is an important topic you are discussing...thank you. It would be greatly helpful if you would include written text underneath spelling the mode's names so further research could be facilitated. Also, if you could connect, in text, the names of the renown mbira makers today with the mode's they are known for. It is my understanding that in Zimbabwe, among the Shona people, tunings are highly individual by players and they are know often for their personal tuning which would obviously be idiosyncratic.

Thanks Joel, that was wonderful, both clear & concise! I`ve played guitar for over 40 years and have learned more about "music theory" in your 17 min clip than ever before! I`m about to build a Kalimba on a guitar and this was so helpful. (check out KALIMBATAR on youtube) Keep up the good work!

Awesome! I’m so glad you got some good info out of it. Good luck on the Kalimbatar!

so the third lowest key of the mbira ist ALWAYS the key it's in? it's always the third?

Some mavembe tuned mbiras have an extra bass key so in that case it’d be the 4th key, but if it has 7 bass keys then yes.

Yknow, not that clear. If you were to redo, you might consider separating the piano demonstration of the theory from the mbira demonstration. That would be clearer I think.
I hope your circs get better. Happy holidays!

Ballantyne de Wolf as I mentioned, this is a video for the mbira patrons on patreon.com/mbira most of those people already have an understanding of a lot of the mbira terminology I’m using in the video. It’s not meant to be an intro video. If you have any specific questions you would like clarification on, feel free to ask here.
