Sekuru Simon Mashoko (Gwenyambira) built this njari for me over 21 years ago. He passed away before I was able to collect it, and I assumed it was lost for good. Thanks to my friend Glenn West for finding it and returning it to me!

      Hey Jawad. Good to hear from you, old friend! I hear you on that difficulty, and it’s mine too! It’s hard when the family doesn’t understand that I just need to spend all day every day practicing! 🤣

      @@JoelLaviolette Good to hear from you too! Indeed, that's the key, right, actually tackling the list. Clearly, I don't practice nearly enough, ha ha. I've been doing musical "baby steps" for 30 years - guess I'm forever a toddler! 🙂 Cheers.

    The thing about erasing the crosses at the end is such a great idea. A stark contrast to the steak method. I have a question tho, the tasks seem to be of equal importance. How would you differentiate between things that need to be done every day (for example studying a specific subject) from the ones that are "if possible, but not necessary" (like reading for leisure or studying another, less important subject)?

    • @JoelLaviolette
      @JoelLaviolette Год назад

      That's a great question! All the things on this list were important enough to me to be done at least every few days. Less important things tend to go on that little to-do list on the top (they often stay there a long time!). But the truth is, all of my "high priority" things can't get done in a day so low priority things just don't really even make it on my list.

    • @JoelLaviolette
      @JoelLaviolette Год назад

      Some mavembe tuned mbiras have an extra bass key so in that case it’d be the 4th key, but if it has 7 bass keys then yes.

    Hi Joel I'd like an mbira teacher/player to come here to live in S.E. Az, near Douglas. I can house and feed that person for awhile, they can teach and we can play ... We have a small farm out of town, and a tourist town nearby to practice on the street for ambience. We are right near 2 border towns for easy access from Mexico. Thank you. I cannot use a computer anymore .. All the best!

    This is an important topic you are discussing...thank you. It would be greatly helpful if you would include written text underneath spelling the mode's names so further research could be facilitated. Also, if you could connect, in text, the names of the renown mbira makers today with the mode's they are known for. It is my understanding that in Zimbabwe, among the Shona people, tunings are highly individual by players and they are know often for their personal tuning which would obviously be idiosyncratic.

      Dande is an area in north-eastern Zimbabwe. It’s a spiritual hub and where one of the main mhondoro spirits (Ambuya Nehanda in Muzarabani) is based.

      Hey-sorry man. This is such an old video, I’m sorry I haven’t tried it on ableton 11. If it’s actually crashing then it makes me think there must be some internal issues with Maschine since it’s not even supported any more. Good luck!

    I really enjoyed that breakdown of a very funny saying. Culturally, is there any reason to avoid putting a particular proverb on a particular song?

    • @JoelLaviolette
      @JoelLaviolette 3 года назад

      Hi Betty. That's an interesting question. I don't think I can give a good answer to that, but I would bet you money that you will find people that will adamantly tell you "yes" and others that will tell you"no"! What I can say is that I've never been personally told that I should not sing certain things on certain songs. I think of these as more like concepts that a singer may want to express, so if that expression wants to be said in that moment, the singer would sing the line-regardless of the song. That's why you hear the same line sung by a singer over different songs. it's about the idea, not the song. At the end of the day, it is all about context and so the more you know, the better you can provide something appropriate for the context. I hope that helps.

    Thanks for the vid man, found it very helpful. I have just upgraded to Cubase 11 pro and one of the selling features for me is to be able to set the meters (and colour them) so I did that at -15dB for this exercise. I am re-visiting an album project to re-mix and master I do my own mastering as don’t have the budget). Two questions please. 1: I usually export my mixes out at 32 bit floating but now could go 64 bit float, would that be worth it for the resolution / headroom? 2: So, is the overall goal to get the final mix peaking at around - 15 dB and export the mix out at that level for mastering? Many thanks again for your great video. Regards from me here in Scotland

    • @JoelLaviolette
      @JoelLaviolette 3 года назад

      Hey there. 1) I don’t personally see the benefit of exporting to 64 bit float. Maybe if you were doing some audio forensics or space sound research or something, but with music...no. 2) once all tracks are summed then hopefully by following the -15 idea on individual tracks you will have something like -10 to -6 db to hand to the mastering engineer
