I’ve holidayed several times next to RAF Valley and thought that the training Hawks were loud, but the last time I was there, three Typhoons visited, and their take-off was ear-splitting, and awesome! That take-off was the highlight of my holiday, but I feel sorry for anyone living near RAF Coningsby.

Legend has it that in the dark mists of time some erk was told to go and paint the squadron number on an aircraft as 'XX one X' as in XXIX for 29, however, his interpretation was a little different and he just put 'XX and X' and they have stayed like that ever since.

It's all good, and I'd have thought it was fine, until recently. How much fuel!

I’m a old fells and was working on F4 Phantoms. If the Phantom was clean wing (no external fuel tanks ) from take off with both engines in max Afterburner it would use up 13000 lb of fuel in about 12 to 15 minutes. That fuel ( kerosene) would last you two years in your central heating boiler. If the F4 had external fuel tanks ( 2x Sgt Fletchers and a centreline tank) and flew economy that is AB s for take off only then flight endurance about 2 hours. Hope you found this interesting.

The Typhoon aircraft is more modern so fuel usage would be much lower l think.
