    Awesome video!! We visited Salzburg and traveled by private tour to the meadow in the opening scene at Mehlweg, Bayern, Germany 3 years ago today. It was quite a trek up there but so worth it! We missed visiting the trail and meadow on that trip. I guess we need to go back! Thanks for the travel tips 😊

      @@Bigboytravel Hey, BigBoy: Yes, we took the train to Werfen from Salzburg, following your great directions. We also remembered to look behind us as the views changed frequently, especially on the trail.
      The lack of people there was really nice after a week and a half in Salzburg, which was full of tourists. But, that's part of the fun, too. The Sound of Music Trail is a well-kept secret.

    Dear Big boy Travel,
    You have done a great job with your information here.
    If I may however point out one thing. The Leopold Schron location was unavailable at the time of the filming so the film crew recreated the Horse statues and gates to the lake right nextdoor. Tha back terrace of the house was a partial set for shots facing the lake. The garden was much more simple than nextdoor at Leopold Schron, with just four boxwood hedge squares. You can still see this layout on Google Earth.

    • @Bigboytravel
      @Bigboytravel  Год назад +1

      Hey Daniel, thanks for watching. You comment is definitely important for people to know. That is one thing I planned on pointing out in our future videos about Leopold Schron plus a general one covering all of the "real life sites" from the movie. I've been to the grounds and inside the main building about 6 times in the last few years so I plan on pointing out the 2nd terrace from the movie, the original gazebo location next to it, the mirror room inside which was recreated in the movie, the ties to Maria's memoir rights & salzburg music festival, as well as other hidden gems about the grounds like the hidden doorway inside the library.

    Thank you for this detailed information. We are going to Salzburg for the first time in September and plan on renting a car. Hoping there is parking in Werfen. Can't wait!!!

    • @Bigboytravel
      @Bigboytravel  Год назад

      yes there is a huge parking lot along the river that people either walk to the castle from or take the bus up to the ice cave. You can also drive the switchback road part way up the mountain for the ice cave but it is still a lot of hiking and cable cars from there and that lot is small so better to take the bus from the larger lot unless the wait time is too long (posted on a huge sign). There is no direct parking by the Sound of Music Meadow but you can drive up there, just much better to hike and an experience in itself. the center of the village has a wide main road with parking on both sides.

    • @Bigboytravel
      @Bigboytravel  Год назад +1

      You can on most days park right on Markt street but on busy days yes I'd park at the Parkplatz lot near the river then hike the trail up. You can also park at the lot on the western side of the castle a d hike up the road (no pedestrian shoulder) in just 25 minutes. I've seen people park on thr road next to the meadow but technically it is a farming road either "no parking" and the hike is more enjoyable anyway. Ideally you will pair the meadow with a visit to the castle for one of the day bird shows

    Thank you for the wonderful and informative video! We are planning to go in a few days, but may not have time to do the hike, and some people in our group have a hard time walking long distances. Is there a way to drive up to (or close to) where the meadow is? If so, how do we do that?

    • @Bigboytravel
      @Bigboytravel  Год назад

      driving is possible but there isn't a parking lot so you'd be parking a lot a country road. If it is just to take a photo or two that may be okay but to relax for a while it won't really work.
      you may want to consider a taxi from Salzburg. You can negotiate in person before you get in and it should cost around 100 euros one way or 150 round trip. Depending on how long you want to stay at the meadow you likely can agree to pay them extra if they wait for you.

    • @Bigboytravel
      @Bigboytravel  Год назад

      Hey Livia, sorry I missed your message. I'd say it's not likely to be safe enough for hiking the trail this month. They don't maintain it in thr winter and don't clear the ice/snow but you can hike up along the road. That isn't 100% safe either as their is no sidewalk and little shoulder but it will be a little more cleared of snow/ice. Essentially is considered at your own risk in winter

      Yep, exactly how I show it in the video. You can also walk the road up, which is low traffic, however there is no shoulder or path for pedestrians so we recommend the trail. You can also drive or taxi up but there isn't really a set (approved) place to park

    Hello I am going with my Mum next week and plan to get the train from Salzburg, however we are not in a position to hike. Is it possible to get a taxi up there and then call a taxi to get back down? What would be the best option for people wishing to visit the meadow but unable to walk? Thanks so much in advance

    • @Bigboytravel
      @Bigboytravel  Год назад +1

      Yes you can 100% do that but I've found taxis hard to come by in Werfen unless you pre arrange it. If you enter "taxi werfen austria" into Google there are a lot that pop up in Google maps but you'll want to visit a couple of their websites or call to narrow one down. I'd even call and start by staying "Hallo, sprechen Sie Englisch?" To see if they speak English. From there you can arrange a pickup at the werfen train station to have them take you up and wait to take you back down to the train statiln or to the Castle after
      If you don't arrange it ahead you honestly may want to hire one from the Salzburg train station the day of. You can negotiate in person before you get in and it should cost around 100 euros one way or 150 round trip.
      Depending on how long you want to stay at the meadow you likely can agree to pay them extra if they wait for you.

      Did you look at the guide on our website that goes with the video? It has a map of thr location and hike. We also have a SOM locations guide on our site which a more comprehensive map.
      In werfen it is a valley and the castle is slightly north of the village. The castle, village and meadow are all on the west side of the river and the higher mountains on the Eastside of the river have the ice cave.
      So if you are on the meadow looking east, you'll see the village below you and the castle slightly to your left.

    Unfortunately The Sound Of Music Meadow where Do Re Mi was filmed is currently inaccessible. I was there a month ago and you can't get up there. The footpath is closed. I've made a video about it. Very disappointing, considering next year is the 60th Anniversary of the release. There is also no sign as to when it will be open again.

      No stream to skip pebbles
      When filming that scene. They had a farmer who was not very happy with them. Because it was upsetting his cows and their efforts for producing milk. In the night before the crew came back to continue filming. The farmer poked holes in the rubber waterproof lining of the stream . Using a pitchfork . All the water drained away. That meant they had to rebuild it
