This was a great subject matter, everyone owns a Mora. This is the first comprehensive video I have seen with a detail description of the different types of Moras. With the vast choices of Mora knives, it is very informative, would like to see more with other Mora knife types.
I have a Mora 2000, and I really like it, not only for the excellent sharpness and the cofortable handle, but also for the sheath which covers a big part of the knife, (similar to the traditional Saami knives) thus making the knife itself less likely to accidentally fall out of the sheath.
I have used Bark River knives much more often than Mora knives. I have already confirmed Bark River Fox River in A2 and Gunny in A2 are very sharp and hold very long. They are dependable. Their handles are very beautiful and fit my hand very nicely. They have given me joy of using and owning. They are art things as well as nice tools. Mora knives haven't got my reliance yet. They don't please my eyes. Thanks.

I tested and compared it with regular Companion in field deer dressing. The handle of Heavy Duty is extremely thick and not very useful. Its carbon steel took a micro chip but the other portions kept extremely sharp. It was rusty. It is typically a carbon steel. I have a video "Deer hunting knives #126" on my channel. Thanks.

Great video. I think for the money, the Mora knives exceed all expectations. I think it would be interesting to see the edge retention comparison of a straight scandi blade and a scandi with micro convex from stropping. In my experience, a straight scandi grind does not hold its edge as well as a scandi edge with a stropped micro-convex bevel. Thanks again for all the great content in your videos. Yes. I have ever used the Force in my #25 deer hunting video. As you mention it has a bit more belly, but I didn't feel it useful at all since its blade length is too long and its handle is too bulky for a hunting purpose. The companion is a better knife for field deer dressing in my opinion. Thanks.

Bucklite Max is more for hunting than Mora Clipper. Buck's hollow bevel tekes a home made convex edge very easily but is not very good for wood jobs. Mora's edge is very sharp from the factory and nice for wood jobs. I love the both knives evenly. Thanks.

Strange. Bahco 2444 looks identical to mora clipper, but the x-ray shows that mora Tang is longer. I hacksawed one bahco and the tang is much shorter. At least then it was. Could be it has been changed.

I didn't feel carbon steel was better than 12C27. On Karesuando and Helle knives I felt the same too. I don't know about bushcraft cases. But always in deer dressing in Scandi knives 12C27 feels better than carbon steel to me for some reason. Thanks.
It doesn't matter how thick the tang is since the weak point is the blade and the handle material. What most people doesn't realize is that the tang is "laminated" by the handle so it's as strong as the handle itself since the handle stops it from bending and flexing. Whether you have a full tang or a stick tang the knife is much, much more likely to snap at the blade than the tang. Mora is only selling thick tangs to cater to the foreign market that thinks it makes a difference. ;)

Great video. Mora knives are excellent. Even at 5 times the price they would be great value. The scratches are obviously from grinding at the factory. If you sharpen it on a flat stone, you will also realize that the bevel is slightly concave. Anyway, not a problem. It doesn't affect usage. What do you think of the new Companion Heavy Duty with the thicker blade?
Good video Doc, the "Heavy duty" is a real disappointment, I was going to buy one until your X-ray showed up that scrawny little tang. I think you must have every measuring and observational tool going... except a hardness tester! Your X-rays are always a revelation. Many thanks for posting.
@interista Full height tang does have a benefit over a stick tang when it comes to batoning to split or cut wood, but if you baton a stick tang knife properly there is no reason it will fail in the field. Baton a stick tang with the knife level, hitting only on the blade, not the handle, and don't put much downward force on the handle itself. Let the baton be the tool to push the blade into the wood; low grip force against the handle and you should be fine. Proper technique is important.
Unfortunately, you can't get a replacement ferro rod for the Fireknife. I've used mine very intensively in the past year and almost wore the firesteel out totally, and when it's gone, I'll probably won't use it again, as the companion is hands down a better knife for bushcrafting
That why I'm not a fan of coatings. Forced Patina can be reapplied easily, but why bother in the first place? The cutting edge won't be coated anyway, so it's purely cosmetic for anyone not needing an anti-reflective coating.
Most of the Mora failures with blades broken I have seen are snapped where the blade meets the handle/tang during batoning. When handles were broken it was usually from direct baton. Personally I don't baton my knife. I have done it to learn, but I've never needed it. Batoning a wooden wedge is much better than beating your knife I think. There are others out there, probably not all of them American, that want to baton their knives, and if they do it correctly even a Mora can take it.

CPM-3V is a well balanced steel currently over A2, longer edge holding and more chip resistant. I don't know of a better balanced steel than 3V. The scalpel should be held by pinching by the way.
Opinel stainless steel blades are okay, but their carbon steel is quite nice. I have an Opinel No9 that I have modified for a thin pocket carry that is simple like a higonokami. (See my profile for video) I also keep an Opinel No8 on the coffee table for peeling fruit - our version of a Japanese fruit knife. It works well, is compact, and stays sharper than our old cheap fruit knife.
Yes, I have. I still have 3 pieces. But all are made of stainless steel. I forget if it had a micro bevel from factory or not. But now they all have a zero grind convex bevel done by me. But their steel has poor quality and doesn't take the keenest edge. Anyway I think their locking mechanism is poor and dangerous. So I don't carry them any more. Thanks.
The skimpy tangs on Mora knives are something the maker would rather the potential customer not see. It's a disposable knife. The Mora is the kind of knife to abuse. I don't use a $150 knife on a job where I think there might be a nail or something hard to ding an edge. That's a job for a Mora.
Recently I made a great complete collection of Morakniv. I don’t have Garbergs yet. Amongst them, Kansbol (has multi-mount) and Bushcraft Survival Desert (has fire steel and diamond sharpener on its sheath) are very interesting. But there is a Hunting Set which I believe you may enjoy a lot. Including a butchering and a filleting knife, and a very handy and short honing rod. all in a flexible and reliable nylon bag. Both knives have orange plastic handles.
I found a Bushcraft Force retailer, in your opinion is this knife still a good bushcrafting knife? I'm planning on getting it for it's sharpness and reliability. Do you have other Mora suggestions that match the Force in performance?
I love 3.2mm thick full tang Garberg in 14C28N very much now for batoning to make a fire. The 2.5mm thick Force is a light carving or food prep knife as a hiking companion in my current opinion. Thanks.

Juzt got a Mora Clipper and love it. That combined with a KaBar BK17 I use makes bushcraft a joy. Virtuovice thank you for you video's.

Very nice. The spine for the Firestarter can be filed to a burr so it's more effective at creating fire.

Hey Virtuosic! I have a question if you or anyone else knows the answer. I am looking for a true Scandi ground knife without a microbevel from the factory. I bought a Mora Bushcraft Black which came with a microbevel which I was disappointed in. Are there any Mora knives or other brand of knives that are true Scandi?
+Stu Ben Mora Bushcraft in 3.2mm thickness has a microbevel. I don't think the other models have it.
