@fermatichebellosei1595 Just because your musical knowledge is lacking doesn't mean other Scandinavian composers don't exist... Can even spell Grieg correctly... Not everyone is into big orchestra music... Music exists for everyone's taste. But I agree that to relate musical talent to climate is strange ... Protestantism, then common in Scandinavia, considered music pagan and a distraction...
I think the charming of music from Russian composers is mainly due to that they put many native folk songs into their music from ancient Caucasia, the steppe of Central Asian. People divided the cultural development into western and oriental from there.
Incredible to think that Rimsky-Korsakov was offered and took a professorship in orchestration though in his own words he couldn’t name all the chords but could play them. He had no structured music education save that he picked up from the mighty handful. In his words he became the conservatory’s best student as he learned by himself all that he didn’t know.
Indeed, apart from this, he was the teacher of composers, such as Al.Glazunov, Arensky, Ig. Stravinsky snd partially S. Prokofiev's. His works have had a decisive impact on them. He also wrote the 2-volume treatise "Principles of orchestration", edited by Max. Steinberg. The examples of the book are excerpts from his own operas.
Don't forget Glazunov! He's one of my favorites, two of his most powerful works are Raymonda and his 4th symphony, though he wrote so much good music. I'd personally say my top 3 favorite Russian composers are Korsakov, Glazunov, and Shostakovich, that's how much I enjoy his music.
I am from a Ukrainian background and this along with music from my native country this music goes to the soul of every Slav. I can still hear my Buba singing songs from her village in Ukraine . Sitting around the table at Easter with the Easter bread blessed by the priest holding three candles and hand dyed Easter eggs . At Christmas going to St. Vladamirs and listening to the choir sing beautiful hymns. At 70 years now it seems like a long time ago.
Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov (born March 6 [March 18, New Style], 1844, Tikhvin, near Novgorod, Russia-died June 8 [June 21], 1908, Lyubensk). He had nothing to do with Ukraine!
First heard the Fantasia on Russian Themes (Kreisler arrangement) on Perlman's album in 1996 (I was 20) and it's my favorite in that album. Still listening to it in 2020. Beautiful picture too.
One can feel the vastness and majesty of Russia in this great orchestral score by the great Meistro. Yet one can also feel the suttleness and yet the dangers that lurk within the vast Tiaga of Siberia while at the same token the gentleness of flowing rivers and streams of the nation as a whole. The spirit of Russia is summed up in this masterpiece. 🇷🇺
I know that well known russian composer since i was6 years,in 1956 .i was very found of his music so Tchaïkovsky .now i still love russian music little more than Mozart or Beethoven.
This is a beautiful piece! Rimsky-Korsakov is my favorite of all classical composers, followed by Dvorak and Borodin. My favorite classical work is the Russian Easter Overture by Rimsky-Korsakov. It stirs the emotions to an exhilarating height!
I heard this once years ago. Every now and then I remembered the opening, with no clue where it was from. Finally I have been reunited! What a beautiful piece :)
We visited his grave at the beautiful Alexander Nevsky Monastery Cemetery in St Petersburg. You will also find the last resting places of Tchaikovsky, Dostoevsky and more geniuses there. This music fits the scene beautifully.
I was there with my wife in 1986. The year of Chernobyl. I took photos of the graves with a Hanimex camera purchased in Stockholm to replace a newly bought Canon Sure Shot which had broken down. When I got home I found that the Hanimex was not advancing the film. All I got was unexposed film!
I am entranced by this SILKEN thread. Have loved this work since 1970s, and Rimskii Korsakov since early childhood around 1952. Yeah, am a fossil. But a vibrant fossil!

+Ivanoe Cubillos I love the music of the world over, here and beyond. In USA we no longer hear any decent world music other than on Pacifica stations and certain very localized college channels; the 1996 Telecommunications Act signed by Clinton has DESTROYED radio culture in this country. (The American Right Wing madness all came about BECAUSE of that rotten piece of legislation!) Most music here is Xtian, Rap (NOT MUSIC), Metal, SAPPY love songs, "Oldies", and many classical stations are heavy on the Mozart/Bach/Haydn/and "War Horses" played by "Pops" orchestras. You Tube has become my "Go-To" for intelligent music!

Such tenderhearted music, as we often associate Russia with callousness. I have studied their history and am nonplussed by the paradox of harshness and tenderness in their culture. I am only 1/8 Russian, but that fact has fascinated me for decades.
Who created the myth of Russia's callousness? Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Bulgakov, Pasternak, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Prokofiev and many others would never have appeared in a soulless country. The poet Rainer Rilke wrote: "All countries border on each other and only Russia borders on God." Better read what they wrote about Russia: Thomas Mann, Berlioz.
The church in the photo is not St Basils in Moscow but a Nineteenth century church built in St Petersburg in the style of St Basils -if I'm not mistaken it was dedicated in expiation for the assassination of Tsar Alexander on this spot.
There's an old somewhat worn out adage. "There is always something exciting happening in Russian music". This piece is certainly no exception. His work is so atmospheric. Perhaps not so great a work as Scheherazade or Antar but that's a matter of opinion. i love them all.

+Warren Hamlet "There is always something exciting happening in Russian music" - now there's a phrase I won't be forgetting. Do you have any idea where it is from?
Shawn Wooster Some people can not bear Russian spirit. Ah, and some others thinking that using language of Vivaldi means unoriginality. But it's only same language - to make it clear to people who do not know Russian well. And someone else thinks it could be played better. So - three "not" to two hundreds of "yes". It's normal. What is strange to me is that so few people knows about it.
+Shawn -- short attention spans very possibly. Or just musical immaturity -- lots of that around now, with young people fed on a diet of worthless commercial fare.
My eyes reacted moistened to such a masterful piece, I was unaware of such a spectacular piece and its creator. It transports you to unimaginable places and creates emotions that cross the chest and accelerate your breathing. A marvel!
First, 10'44''' is a perfect place to insert an ad to increase our expectation of the key change, if needed. The above is just a joke...I was deeply caught by this piece the very first time I listened to it. That's the very reason I started working on the solo by myself during my part time since one month ago in Sept. Right now I think I am almost finished. Can't stop listening and playing this piece. It seems I have a special love on Russian music for almost 20 years.
Debussy was my favorite Russian composer until I discovered Gershwin. But I must say that with this Rimsky guy I'm completly blown away. Viva russian music!
What a sweet piece. Nicely crafted but never rises to greatness. Now listen to the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and you'll know what is possible with these forces.
The piece is beautiful and I played it when I was younger, but it’s so scummy to put ads on this video. I want to listen to the music, not have it interrupted at a quiet moment by someone trying to advertise
In his works, soloists, especially the violin soloist, are always featured to lead the theme. In this work, violin solo parts makes it sound like a violin concerto.

Music by russian composers is very b beautiful
Mother Russia
I have been on the train from St.Petersburg to Moscow.
I'm italian and we had many great composers, but the great essere of Rimsky Korsakov, Borodin, Mussorgsky and others of same era, is unattainable by anyone else
Here you can hear very clearly where one Ottorino Respighi has learned his craft!
I am Serbian , I do love Russian history and even more Russian composers❤ a true Gem they are, their music touches the soul deeply. 🇷🇸❤🇷🇺 the world should be thankful to Russia for all the beauty they offered us.
I agree completely. I would just add Russian writers and poets, the first unparalleled.
‘‘Beauty will save the world.’ Dostoevsky said this in a more overtly spiritual context but I believe it applies here.
I truly wish that were so ... but I fear that beauty is too easily crushed underfoot.
10/14/24: Tolstoy: Beauty is all too often confused with goodness.
He knew and touched a real Slavic soul ❤️.
And served consecutive terms as the Governor of Puerto Rico.
I'm German, and this music touches me in the core. LOVE it.
Talking about Russian composers - don't forget Sergej Lyapunov, his etudes "Storm" and "Lezghinka" are drop-dead-beautiful!
Just enjoy music. I'm Russian and love whatever touches my soul. I'm happy that people like you exist in this troubled silly world of today
Superbe.

Russian composers make such beautiful melodies. It must be the cold nights.

The Russian composers are my favorite and I am not Russian, Shostakovich, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky Korsakov....My love of music is also universal!!!
yes. I also love the Mongolian and Himalayan folk singers.
Yes I agree! Shostakovich is my favorite! Khachaturian is good too if he counts, and Prokofiev also.
They are simply the best

violins come in and out of our lives like angels, but always in a hurry to return to their true home
ahh that feeling when you click on a composer you never heard of and get chills within a minute.
Close your winter. It's -30* below outside. Now, fiften minutes later, same reaction?
This is the most beautiful piece I ever heard in my life.
Shoshtakovich, Korsakov and Tchaikovsky. My all time favorite Russian composers

This is a spiritual lullaby of Mother Russia, and a cradle of Russian soul
What could be more beautiful than this delightful fantasy. . .
Lydia Mordkovich has quite the special way to play, unique, brings up the metallic sound of the violin beautifully.

Rimsky-Korsakov translated what he felt about Russia into music, to make it audible to us. He was brilliant.
Wonderful thought.
One can feel his love of country and its culture. Bravo.

U luckiiiiiiz!!!!🎻🎺📯
At times, the violinist is like a spinner drawing out a silken thread, notes that stretch out, shining like moonlight.
I am a violinist. Thank you. Now I have a wonderful way to describe the violin's music. "A flowing silken thread of sound."
Catherine Kyngdon Beautifully put. A great description.
Catherine Kyngdon, you’re a poet!
I am entranced by this SILKEN thread. Have loved this work since 1970s, and Rimskii Korsakov since early childhood around 1952. Yeah, am a fossil. But a vibrant fossil!
So beautifully put!
This is what we call `a perfect violin concert` , I think.
What did you expect from the legendary person who composed the epic of Shahrazad
Less than these?
This music makes you speak with your soul
i agree ! this is my first class piece of music ! ! !
just so you know, it is spelled Scheherazade. I only mention, because it is one of my fav pieces and I always like to abbreviate it to Schehehe. It's really fun to say. and it's just a fun time.

No conocía este tema que lindo
A bit of Heaven this music.

Do you have any idea where it is from?
totally agree--one would have to be sleeping or tone deaf not to get excited. its flavorful like good borscht
It seemed like the more oppressive Russian society was, the more daring and exciting its music became.
Borscht isn't particularly flavorful, and it's Ukranian.
One overlooked miniature masterpiece of his is the Quintet for Piano and Winds.
I hear Arvo Part being born in this composition. Very difficult childhood but everything for the adulthood is already present here.
This is my kind of magical.
So strange that someone would dislike this...

maybe because of the clarinett too loud and sounding a bit off-tone at 0:28

BELLO .......gracias.
Teşekkür ederim . ve ben seni çok özledim.
