Having the breakdown sectioned by reading through excerpts from the book and cross referencing the films is absolutely perfect! This whole video is an absolute joy! Can't wait for the next ones for books 2&3!!
Huge thank you for checking out the video. This is now the longest solo one I’ve done for the channel and a massive thank you to our editors Steesh, Jon, Kobik, Laurence, Cade and Griffin for all their hard work. I think they had to edit down about 6 hours of me rambling but they absolutely killed it.
Ha, I vividly remember sitting in the theater when the Fellowship ended, there were some people sitting in front of me who were pissed that the movie just ended like that. I guess they didn't know it was part of a trilogy lol
Amazing video! One point is when you said that Galadriel’s hair was used to create the Silmarils, this actually wasn’t the case. She refused Feänor even a single strand of her hair, sensing a darkness in him. It makes her giving Gimli 3 strands of her hair all the more powerful
My 13 year old son finally agreed to watch the trilogy with me. We're starting in about 20 mins and I'm so excited I feel like the biggest goober in the world. 😂❤
Awe I hope he likes it! My daughter is the same age and has seen all of LotR and The Hobbit. She's homeschooled and just finished reading The Hobbit, now we are moving on to the first LotR book. It's so neat being able to share this magic with our kids. I remember watching The Fellowship of the Ring in the movie theater with my Dad when I was 13 too. We still share a love for LotR.🥰
One detail I like (not sure if you weren't aware or if you were planning on bringing it up in a later video): In the Battle of Mount Doom, you called out the elves were gold compared to the dark colours of Sauron's army. Their armour is mostly in golds and greens, symbolzing spring/summer. Magic is plentiful, the elves are at their peak. It's hard to tell when the elves reappear in the Battle of Helm's Deep, 'cause night time, but it's more obvious in RotK: elven armour in the "present" of the films is shown to be in more rust and copper tones. Magic is dying, the elves are diminishing. The Age of Man approaches, and the elves are leaving. It is symbolically their Autumn. (Also represented in Rivendell, as you mentioned -- it's not just the season of autumn in the world, it's where the elves are in their millennia-long life cycle.) If you image search for "lord of the rings elf 2nd age armour" vs. "3rd age armour" you can see the differences more clearly.
Man its been a true honor watching this channel grow and Paul too, hes still the same guy but hes just gotten so much better refined as a content maker/analyzer. One of the besr breaksdowns ever. Awesome work as always
I don’t agree with all of Tolkien’s worldviews, but it’s so refreshing to revisit a story that actually praises clear heroism and has morally good main characters. The books and the movies will always be timeless because the theme that you should fight to protect what you love will always ring true. GRRM needs to stop fighting against this very idea if he ever hopes to finish ASOIAF. Great video man keep up the good work it’s clear that you’re actually a big fan and writing these scripts yourself.
Absolute banger of a breakdown brother!! These movies are one of the rare perfect films. To make on a whole 12-13 hours of absolutely perfect films is still amazing to me. Love the extended editions and have owned them for close to two decades. Thank you dude and can’t wait for your two towers video
Have I read and watched lord of the rings hundreds of times ? Yes Am I still going to watch this? absolutely!! Hope you’ll break down Rings of Power Szn 2!!!
I'm supposed to be working, but instead I'm sitting here with my coffee watching a 2 hour Fellowship breakddown from start to finish...and I regret nothing!
I have watched these films countless times and will continue to watch them for many more years to come, but dude, THIS IS EPIC! Keep it up. The back and forth from source material to the adaptation is really interesting, and I think you're the only one who does it. So keep it up. I'm looking forward to more of these long ass videos!!!!
Wow, I generally enjoy your breakdowns but this one was truly spectacular. Great job man. You have my like, and my subscribe LOL One does not simply walk into a Lord of the rings breakdown but you definitely did
Paul… great job. Still loving this channel years after finding you (There were a fewer of us then). If you’ve not had your fill of LOTR, I’d recommend the BBC Radio dramatisation which you reference Sir Ian Holme being in as Frodo. It’s how I got into LOTR as my dad used to listen to it in the car and it is still one of my fondest memories of my childhood, listening to it with him on long journeys.
This is the type of evergreen content that will contribute to making your channel a truly legendary slice of RUclips history, alongside all of your excellent videos. Nothing else quite like it, great work. Can’t believe I haven’t subbed til now, big oversight. Don’t stop doing your thing!
1:44:53 Man, love your videos, but saying that Galadriel’s hairs were used to create the Silmarils is wrong in so many ways; yes, they act as an olive branch between elves and dwarves, but c’mon, the Silmarils were crafted by an elf before the First Age, all the way across the sea, and they had within them the light of the two trees. I know that, in the book, Galadriel’s hair is described to have the glow of the two trees, but the connection ends there 😅. Other than that, the video was great, as always.
Feanor the builder of the silmarils was inspired to create them from galadriels hair, and asked her 3 times for a strand symbolizing the 3 she gave to gimbli(if i remember right its been a long time)
What's interesting is the Tolkien Scholar (John Sierra) said Sauron's original Quenya name Mairon, which means “The Admirable” or “Admirable One” can also be translated as "Precious"! If so, this makes the Ring seem even more sinister when all the other characters call it "My Precious".
My dude, the sheer level of effort thats gone into this is beyond the pale. I am not even a big fan of Lord of the Rings but some how i just watched a 2 hr video about it, excellent work mate!
The cheap tricks He refers to are his fireworks. By making his actual being more imposing he reminds Bilbo there is more to him than displays of visual pleasure. But I get where ya come from lol
He wasn't conjuring a trick. He was "uncloaking himself", revealing himself to Bilbo. So he's really saying "I'm not some cheap magician, here look, I am Maia of incredible wisdom and horrible power".
This movie always holds a special place in my heart. I was in NYC for 9/11 and the New York premiere was also an event you could attend for the recovery efforts. So I got some tickets for me and my family and almost all the cast was there (No Viggo or Ian) It is one of my top moments in my life and seeing something I loved brought to the screen with a theater full of passionate fans and it is the #1 experience I ever had watching a movie. This will always hold a special place in my heart. I loved watching this (had to do it over a few days though you madman) and I thank you for the hard work you put into this. Looking forward to the next two.
Slight correction concerning the rings of power. The elven rings were not uncontrollable by the one, as the one could hold dominance over all the rings of power, chiefly as it was still made with the same process Sauron as Annatar taught Celebrimbor. However he had no hand in their making so they were not corruptible, however, when Sauron made the one and put it on, they felt his presence and will, and took theirs off to avoid his control. They only out them back on after his defeat at the battle of Dagorlad.
Dude this video was amazing and now I’m thinking the 1st movie is the best I’m so close to finishing the 1wt book and really cool to see all the Easter eggs that weren’t obvious in the movie giving nod. Smashed it!!!
Great video! A thing you didn't expound upon fully is what Gandalf says to the Balrog. He calls himself the, "servant of the sacred fire" which is referring to Eru Ilúvatar and the flame imperishable that creates all life in Middle Earth.
Absolutely loved this video, easy to watch in chapters around IRL commitments, clearly well researched and thought out and informative but also with the usual Paul humour/charm. Can't wait for the Two Towers vid !
I almost never comment on videos, (other people seem to do a great job of taking that job), but seriously great work. You can see the actual and genuine love for the work. Awesome job.
Thanks so much for this. Tolkien is my fav all time fandom. And love that the two juxtaposition scenes of Degal and Sméagol where a foundation of this channel ☺️🧝♂️
42:40 It is a reference to tobacco, or a derivative likeness, and the books even describe how the Hobbits cultivate it and introduce it to Middle Earth at large through trade. They call it weed, just like they call Athilas a "weed," because it does not have a vegetable pourpose. Plus, Tolkien often smoked a tobacco pipe, like many in his day.
I have watched other LOTR breakdowns, and I particularly am enjoying how you are showing us the book to film adaptation. I read them not that long ago, and could see some of it in the moment. So well done!
I know Andy Serkis has just released a new audio version of the book, but if you wanted to release a version, I would 100% listen to this! Great video as always
This movie is the ultimate fantasy movie... it is so incredibly well-made. It has no equal. Also the trilogy is the last of it's kind - with that I'm talking about the way almost everything is done the old way in camera. There's surprisingly little CGI in the trilogy and Fellowship has the least amount of CGI of the three movies. The best movie of the trilogy and the best of it's kind overall. Nice job with this breakdown... I'm sure it could have been twice the lenght and there would still be stuff to cover, but the most important stuff is here.
This video is brilliant! Appreciate the effort you put it. Currently reading the fellowship and making comparisons myself. Shocking how many lines are taken straight from the works. Looking forward to the next one. 😊

this trilogy was epic to see in theaters with my friends.

Blazed out of our minds! 😂
My local theater is playing all the extended movies this year. Idk if I’m gonna go, I watched them a couple years ago and 12 hours is so much lol
Very jealous
I remember when we went to see Return of the King, it was and still is the only movie I've gone to that has an actual midway intermission.
Watched this video like five times, it's so good. Great job!
Amazing video! One point is when you said that Galadriel’s hair was used to create the Silmarils, this actually wasn’t the case. She refused Feänor even a single strand of her hair, sensing a darkness in him. It makes her giving Gimli 3 strands of her hair all the more powerful
Reading passages from the book, singing the songs, Paul-jokes, and more. I love it all. Thank you.

LotR has lore based off LotR
RoP has lore based on the silmarillien which Tolkien didn't finish
