The Gollum theory doesn't hold water (see what I did there?), he had no idea where the Shire was, all he had was the names Shire and Baggins. He never even Crossed the Misty Mountains. Frodo's parents died because they were goofing off on a boat and they couldn't swim.
When Sam got caught spying, he had already been recruited by Merry, Pippin, and Fatty Bolger for that very purpose. They knew something was up and were keeping an eye on Frodo so he couldn't pull a fast one in them and run off on his own. However, until Sam got caught, they figured he was just going to go after Bilbo. They had no idea how serious things were.

Just random banners or graffiti proclaiming "Frodo Lives!!". 😉
Child of the 70's but loved the LOTR movies.. despite the little changes.
The Hobbit series would have not had me grumbling if they had changed the name and simply given me the opportunity to think "wow.. this is familiar.. must be loosely based on another story.. kinda like "West Side Story".. but different..
The first "Dune" movie was unwatchable.. the new ones are much better.. understandable that there is too much backstory in the books to be portrayed on film.
Anyway.. yes.. these synopses of very complicated characters are well done!!

I always found it amusing that the Valor didn't directly intervene because it was "middle earth's problem." But Sauran was literally from the undying lands and their refusal to bring him to justice after his master was thrown down. Literally allowed all of this to happen.

The Melkor non-interference policy was because Feanor's actions and oath with his boys kinda pissed them off.. "fine.. you do you.. don't come crying to us.."
Earendil went through alot of nasty stuff and finally got a chance to say.. "wtf.. those jerks are dead.. do something.." so they did..
Despite the Sauron, orc and leftover Balrog and Dragon issues.. the Valar were kinda required to be "hands off" as "Men" were Iluvatars balliwick and the Elves who remained had the option to leave..
Not really the Valar's job anymore .. so they did what they could as a workaround and sent the Istari and Glorfindel then hoped things would work out...

What is lesser known is that Merry and Pippen made a mint out of selling water from the entwash, ( the location of they kept secret ) they even made beer and wine with it and "heightening" became a craze among all the Shire folk. In just a few generations, as the hobbits grew taller, their feet became less hairy and their ears more men like. And just like that, hobbits passed out of existence and memory. 😮

Warned and pre-warned.. What's the difference?
Not being snippish, it's an honest question. My first thought, which I still think, is that "pre warned" could be taken straight from Tolkien. His prose was non standard and interesting. As a philologist, he obviously selected his words precisely. Which is why I find his non standard grammar and vocabulary of such interest.
I also wondered if "pre warned" might be idiomatic. English is such a peculiar language, full of weird and wonderful words and locutions..
Another really enjoyable video. I love the long ones. They must take so much work to create.

I always liked that Boromir's death was...completely useless.
He dies trying to defend Merry and Pippin from the orcs. But the orcs get them anyway.
So, practically speaking, a total waste of his life.
Worse still...it's only BECAUSE they get taken by the orcs, that they end up rousing the Ents, who take out Isengard while the main host of orc is off at Helm's Deep and then being chewed up by Huorns.
So, not only did he get himself killed while failing to protect them. It's a GOOD thing he failed to.
    Totally pointless in every way.
I liked that. Good for Tolkien, not making Everything Be Meaningful. Lots of death is pointless especially all the Heroic death of WW1, which was ALL pointless.

Gollum sought to find the Shire but was drawn unwittingly eastwards by the corruption he'd experienced under the ring's influence. He then confessed under torture at Barad Dur that he didn't know where the Shire was and Sauron would surely have been able to break his will. And surely if he had found the Shire, he wouldn't have abandoned his only lead after just two murders.
So I think the fan theory about Gollum killing Frodo's parents is fanciful.

Hi there! I noticed some confusion in your video regarding Aragorn's campaigns against the Easterlings and the specific age in which these events took place. These events actually occur at the beginning of the Fourth Age, under King Elessar's (Aragorn's) reign. After the War of the Ring, Aragorn, as King of the Reunited Kingdom of Gondor and Arnor, focused on rebuilding and securing his kingdom. The campaigns against the Easterlings were part of this effort, as they had been allies of Sauron. This period is briefly mentioned in the appendices of "The Lord of the Rings" and in "The Peoples of Middle-earth," part of "The History of Middle-earth" series edited by Christopher Tolkien. While Tolkien doesn't provide extensive details about these campaigns, they signify a time of transition from the turmoil of the Third Age to the relative peace of the Fourth Age. It's a fascinating period that blends the aftermath of the War of the Ring with the challenges of establishing a lasting peace. This part of Middle-earth's history offers a rich ground for exploration...

  • @Pooter-it4yg
    @Pooter-it4yg 8 месяцев назад

I don't think Denethor suspected Aragorn's true identity when he knew him as Thorongil. At this time he was probably just motivated by jealousy since his father favoured Thorongil (familial favouritism is a theme transmitted down to his treatment of his own sons). Later on he learns that the Fellowship contained one of high station who led the company after Gandalf fell and refers to Aragorn witheringly as "this Ranger from the North" but there isn't anything to suggest he knew a genuine heir had appeared even then.
I don't think Aragorn's Numenorean heritage (and longevity) was known to Theoden, who therefore wouldn't have equated him with Thorongil, who he would have presumed would be an old man by the time of the War of Ring. There certainly isn't any acknowledgement the two knew each other after Gandalf freed Theoden from Saruman's influence.

I've read LOTR, the Hobbit and Silmarillion, but not the other writings. Was it ever explained by Tolkien why the Wizards were depicted as old men, when they are, in fact, immortal Maiar? Instead of eternally young, like the elves, the Wizards seem to be eternally old.

King Thingol would not have known Aragon, reread your Tolkien! the young heir grew up in Gondor with his Mother's people. Aragon used a different name and when he hung out in Rohan. about the time The young king was called home, Aragon would have left Rohan and began serving in Gondor, again a kings man under a different name.. when Aragon served in Gondor, again, even if the young heir was still in Gondor he would one have been one of the knights, an adult not know to the heir. i like the lore, just make sure you think it through. Aragon even said to the kings nephew, 'you would not have known me for you are young and I am old [i paraphrase here] HOPE

Boromir did NOT know of the one ring as “Isildur’s Bane”. He had no idea what had happened to the “great ring of him we do not name.” That news only came to the north and in the north it is called that by the wise.

A-Hem. The Witch King could have been re-embodied by Sauron as happened when the River destroyed their forms and in sprit form the Nazgul returned to Morder.

Q: would smeagol be allowed to travel to valinor if he had withstood the ring in the end? gandalf and gwaihir came with an eagle for him also, and not just for Sam and frodo.

Gollum would have turned into a skeleton if he would have never fell into the lava of Mount Doom when the ring was destroyed, he had the ring for 500 years.

Would be interesting to put the average life-span or wizards (if they were known?) so that we could see that…. If like to know how much he was putting at risk by standing against the balrog. IDK? Maybe not? I know his spirit is immortal right?

Read a place that Legolas said he felt young again bc of the three’s. And certain threes can live for centuries. And several places ive read that he may be 500-1000 yrs old

Hate to be a party pooper but you say the fellowship went to the ruins of Moria “against Gandalf’s judgment”. Pretty sure it was his idea and Aragorn was against it.

Using Helm's Deep is kind of a stupid way to defend Rohan.
The invaders could just set up a defensive barrier around Helm's Deep and take over Rohan while you're surrounded at Helm's Deep.

The invasion wasn't to take Rohan,it was to kill everyone in Rohan. That's what was at stake.

”After Frodo had healed from his wounds, the council of Elrond was summoned to decide their plan to destroy the one ring” - 1) Frodo healed from his _wound_, not wounds plural. It was the point of a Morgul blade that wounded him, not a bunch of injuries. 2) They didn't gather "to decide their plan to destroy the one ring", they gathered to decide what was to be done to the one ring and debated it at length. It wasn't a mere formality to be agreed upon, most people attending didn't know half the story even. This is a posteriori summary that trivializes the choices the free peoples of Middle-earth faced.
