Dang. Talk about a big-time video game "bomb". 💣💥💣 My goodness,Sony. Please do better next time, will you? And by the way,the money itself is NOT the root of all evil(s),but,THE LOVE OF MONEY,is. Other than that, the game "Concord" was already doomed,TO FAIL. And it sure did fail,BIG TIME. Biggest,Loss(L),Ever. Good riddance to really bad garbage!!!!!
There are so many things about Concord. Such as - The Devs calling people who criticize the game Talentless Freaks - Spending 200+ Million Dollars and 8 years to make, only to shut it down in a few days - The Average Housefly lived longer than the game - The New Mario and Luigi officially announcing that the main area of the game is called Concordia Easily one of the Biggest L in gaming.
The PR disaster with this game blow my mind away. It’s the most basic PR and marketing that you don’t want to alienate your product to your target audiences and these people just keep insulting their potential customers then surprised when no one want to buy their game. And this came from Sony not an indie studio. The upper management from this studio is beyond stupidity and I’m so glad they get reality check real hard.
The game wasn't even bad, it was good but good and nothing else. Can't even say much negative about it since the game was so shallow there was not even much to mess up with the game. The game was so generic if concord was free and it would be 2016, Overwatch for 40$ would still dominate the market. Pac-man had deeper storytelling and art designs than this crap called Concord and i mostly blame the art team for it's failure.
I was so close to pre purchasing this! but after watching XQC play this Kick im thankful i didn’t 🙏 dodged a bullet there! 🤣 Imagine Concord being the first major project in your portfolio. Imagine being forced to write, worked as a game developer on Concord for eight years ☠️
I work for a telecom software company. In our contracts, we were forbidden from representing the company, or speaking as an employee of the company about the company's products. I thought it was weird at the time but as I got more experience, I finally understood why. This is a principle that the gaming industry has yet to learn.
Unexpected.... Well welcome back from the moon I guess... "They say they don't know because they chose to ignore or to not accept...but it was there..." People saying now "unexpected" simply have been blind for the last 10 years but well... I do know the reason... It's so much ez to ignore unpleasant things and to learn more... It's so easy to just walk ur daily routine.
As a black person myself games like these upset me so much. I hate when my entire race is treated like a “collective that needs to be pleased” so they make the absolute worst design possible and say “WELL AT LEAST ITS BLACK 🤪” and call it a day. There’s so much more to a video game and they failed at literally every aspect for the sake of poorly done “inclusion”. Same thing (but on a smaller scale) happened with the Skullgirls devs removing a comb from the white girl’s hair because “only blacks use combs” and “this might allude to racial hate groups”. Pretty ironic they only ended up offending us even more by sticking that comb to only blacks. Like all this nonsense is so annoying. You wanna know how to CORRECTLY add inclusion. Make a black CHARACTER, not a BLACK character. Race should be the lowest concern on the list in terms of their characterization. Miles Morales isn’t a good character because he’s black, he’s a good character because the writers prioritized his real life struggles and characterization above all else. Nagoriyuki isn’t a good character because he’s black. Big Band isn’t a good character because he’s black. Concord is a failure because nobody on the team prioritized making a fun video game. A boring video game is a failed product. And I’m glad they failed. Sincerely, A black person who likes fun video games
Inclusivity in videogames has always been there, no need for woke consultation firms and forced tokenism like the crap we've been getting since 2018. Just look at GTA, the entire franchise is rooted in black culture, yet the videogame journos turn a blind eye on it and call gamers "racists" because they're not willing to spend 40 bucks on a awful bootleg of Overwatch.
Concord: 660 peak playercount, $40, shutting down soon LOTR Gollum: 2000 peak playercount, half the price, still available to play, "at least it's COMICALLY bad"
I felt sorry for the people who worked hard to get the game out, but insulting potentials consumers killed whatever sympathy I had for them. Good luck getting a job with that attitude.
if FireWalk had been left to their own devices in the natural gaming ecosystem, that attitude would have been weeded out by the consumers and the tight budgets, or just tanked the whole studio. Sony took them out of their natural environment and gave them a platform before they'd grown enough to be able to use one properly.
Most of them alredy deleted everything related to Concord from their social Media profils. Looks like suddenly they are not that proud of beeing a part of the Concord Dev Team anymore. 😂
I'm sure a lot of people that work there are good people but the people in charge like the LEAD character developer, needs to take blame. Directing how these super important characters would look, feel, live, probably one of the most important parts of the development because of how hard they advertised that part. The Lead developer here shouldn't have decided to make bland crap and tell everyone it is gold. Everyone can see what it is. If the game hinged so hard on characters, the director and lead character designer should have been fired and replaced by better people for more money.
They live in a echo chamber, just like the devs of Suicide Squad, they are surrounded by people forced to praise them to not get fired and they ended up believing all the crap they're pulling is genuinely good
@@LoquendoversoITyep... this is when DEI becomes a problem, when who you are and your politics are more important than creating a quality product... as well as hiring unqualified people to meet diversity quotas

A lot of the character designs would've been massively improved just by using different colors. It honestly seems like they just used a random color generater and hit "fill" on various parts of their design. Bright blue lipstick with bright pink accents on a dirty green armor suit? What were they thinking?
The silhouettes are still mostly trash and it's really hard to tell what those characters are even supposed to be. Looking up their backstories doesn't help much. We have stuff like "the favorite son of the Amazon CEO decided to work in packaging and thereby became a prominent knife-fighter by opening boxes. Then he transitioned, and had to become a bounty hunter because the CEO didn't like that." like what the hell is even that?
@@thatguy1080 well there's some fuscia and charcoal grey, that kind of counts. And she looks Indian, which means spicy food and explosive diarrhea. So if she's gonna be a mage, it's gonna be a fire one.
Imagine following up on that Concord shitshow by releasing an overprized and almost completely redundant "upgrade" to your current gen console, which didn't even have the chance to fully flex it's tech yet. Yeah, Sony is really farming those L's right now.
And to make it worse... the Disc drive for it is not even coming with the console but is freaking OPTIONAL >_> Even the plastic stand costs way more than it should. I swear, Sony has absolutely lost it and it seems all they do all day long is licking some weird toads.
One of them is a single player experience based on a popular format while innovating it to fit a **VERY** popular chinese legend. A chinese legend that is so popular it's made it's way easily into western media and is known everywhere. The other is a no background, boring, ANOTHER live service multiplayer game with a barrier to entry. The math is elementary Watson.
@@aickavon yh it's a very simple answer. New IP from a new studio with almost no marketing was doomed to failure over a game based on the most popular story from the countries origin home to 1.4 billion people.
@@D4C_LoveTrain1I wouldn't say it had no marketing. Sony marketed the shit out of it. Exclusive controller skins, dev interviews, trailers, different character showcases.... The problem was nobody really gave a shit so it didn't drive ant algorithms
Since Concord really loves copying Guardians of the Galaxy designs so much, they should’ve design Emari with better armor and gave her bizarre appearance. Like Rocket Raccoon equivalent of Concord where Emari is a Giant Ground Sloth wearing Space Marine style of armor
The best way to not become consumed by the hatred from media is to just ignore agendas that would make you mad in the first place and just find stuff you like to do instead. Props to all those who saw this product and decided to ignore it. The more people that just start ignoring badly made products without lashing out the less ammunition they will have for false narratives against us gamers.
it is actually mind-blowing that a company that has grown so big would not understand basic sales strategies to this extend: releasing something 8 years after it's trend, asking money for it when competition is free, insulting your target audience, shutting out feedback and still thinking those same people saying the game is bad, will buy your game ... This whole drama made Sony look like they put a toddler in charge, literally any random gamer would know better what would sell and what wouldn't, just the biggest L they could take (and the prices for their new console are not going to help them lol)

8 years down the drain. Imagine being surprised that you might lose your job because of your incompetence, and then wanting empathy from the people you constantly patronize and demonize. Their logic is flawless and the irony of them calling people, i quote, « talentless freaks » speaks for itself.
@Neil.02 That and incompetence. There is no reason for a hero shooter to take 8 years in a Post-TF2 world nor cost an eye-watering amount for a live service game.
When I hear "8 years of development" in the AAA space, that's a massive red flag for me. Big studios are expensive to run - if a game is taking 8 years to make, and all that time is active development, you are SHREDDING money. AAA games should take ~3 to 5 years to make depending on the genre, not _8._ The only exception I can think of is Baldur's Gate 3, which I believe took 7, and even that had an early access cycle and came out as an absolutely huge RPG with a ridiculous amount of actually meaningful choices. 8 years to make a 5v5 shooter? That thing is going to be a _disaster,_ I can guarantee it. 8 year dev cycles are something you should only see for small team indie projects that got way to ambitious, not massive AAA blockbusters.
Fun facts: 1) Baldur's gate 3 was in development for 6 years and probably no more than 4.5 years of active development. 2) Baldur's gate 3 had a budget around $100m, which is all what Larian could afford. If the game had failed they would be no more. 3) Baldur's gate 3 had ~500k+ concurrent players at launch and ~900k at peak which is over 1000 times more. 4) Baldur's gate 3 was criticized by some AAA developers for being too good and too honest (no DLC, no paid content etc). Concord was laughed at by everyone for how bad it was. 5) Baldur's gate 3 sold over 20 million copies and people still playing it even a year after the launch. And you can play it solo when servers will be down. Concord was pronounced DOA and had a funeral 2 weeks later, by that time it started to smell even more.
They say they don't have many ORIGINAL IPs. All the IPs they have are from buying studios who already have proven IPs. I don't know enough about PlayStation IPs to say how much of this is true for PlayStation, but even though Sony makes billions upon billions of dollars from anime through Aniplex, they just distribute and help fund projects made by 3rd party studios.
Imagine if they just used that money to improve and cheapen up their console manufacturing. Heck it might be better to use that money and give away their consoles to schools as "educational equipment" to get kids hooked earlier like what Apple did with their computers.

One of my friends called Concord "Diet Overwatch" when the trailer first came out, he was ecstatic and dying of laughter when we found out Concord was getting pulled on 6th.
I’ve seen people say the reason this game failed was because it’s “woke”, while I feel that is really not the case. It was just a bad game with bad art direction. Overwatch can be considered “woke” because the characters are diverse, but it’s still a success You can make diverse characters, and still make them look good.
It's the same shallow response as "this game/piece of media is misogynistic" etc. Concord failed for a simple reason; it had no hook. It didn't do anything amazing or really interestingly. Most gamers want bang for their buck, and Concord asking 40$ up front (and then breaking it's promise of no micro transactions and "You own Concord it doesn't own you") was the perfect kiss of death. That and the PSN account needs excluding 70% of Earth's people from playing
"Woke" is not just being diverse "Woke" is being diverse just because For example overwatch was a very diverse game with purpose They were all there because it makes sense An worldwide organization in different places all over the earth? U need to have people from all over the earth U need a moving fast character from Brazil? Lucio a black Brazilian who likes dancing An stealthy hacker from Mexico? Sombra Every character makes sense But in Concord? U have people who is supposed to move around and to jump like spiderman that looks like ur fat aunt
Yes and no. Its one particular aspect of wokeism which people object to, which is "male gaze is bad" and "hot female characters objectify women". This particular aspect directly leads to ugly characters in videogames, which is pretty directly tied to how games are received. Other aspects like "love is love" don't affect sales, just look at BG3, which definitely is woke in some ways.
Something interesting about concord is that it was a fundraised project from a company called ProbablyMonsters: ProbablyMonsters CEO's name is Harold Ryan, and no, we don't know how he is related to the Jim Ryan because the later never disclosed information about his relatives. Harold Ryan was the former Bungie CEO, he left after the Destiny release (the infamous 500 million dollars game scandal) and created the ProbablyMonsters that consisted from former Bungie employees. After Sony acquired Bungie, the current Bungie employees went on tour through Sony studios to audit the live service games in development (all 12 of them). After that several promising ones were closed due to negative feedback from said employees. At the same time they highly praised Concord that received additional funds after that. After the bad release of the Concord, ProbablyMonsters distanced themselves from the Firewalk studio, created the new studio and even received additional fund from investors. At the same time, Sony received all backlash from bad release and lost a ton of money. Also, Jim Ryan "left" the Sony which suspiciously enough coincided with the Sony's internal investigation about inappropriate fund distribution.

Concord is so bad that it literally needs a new tier for how bad it was so why out of all games that flopped (S squad KTJL for example) this guy chose.... Senran Kagura????
Senran Kagura are great games that are for a certain niche audience. They're fun action games with a lot of fanservice and good writing. Concord isn't a good game at all.
What annoys me about Concord is that everyone knew it was going to be a bad game, no one was hyped about it, and yet it's another one of those games that everyone points at and goes 'Go Woke Go Broke' like it was supposed to be the next jesus christ for folks when it literally scratched zero interest for leftist communities.
Corpos don't understand woke, honestly. They only see twitter, and that's a cave wall scenario, they are out of touch with what their audience wants, even in terms of wokeness... Then they make that their whole game's identity and selling point, create slop, and then they flop.
these kind of people will take any commercial failure and completely blame it on "woke". There are so many reasons why concorde failed, but "woke" just isnt really one of them. You rarely see people hate on bg3, despite having much content that could be described by these people as "woke", because it was a huge success, which makes it hard to attack - go woke, go biggest rpg success story for years, just does not fit their narrative. They want to drive their narrative and they are gonna use everything that works for them. Meanwhile most gamers like to play good games, and thats about it.
@@cinoscarpia5923 There certainly are cases where going woke doesn't hinder a product's popularity, but this isn't one of them. The gameplay is fine. If it had great character designs some people would have tolerated the pricetag. The reason why it has terrible character design is because the design team included some *very* woke people, the kind who don't tolerate disagreements and think prettiness is oppressive, most notably a so-called "Professor".
the thing that make me sad about whole Concord situation is that the non-human character design is genuinely looks good, like the yellow robot one or the pink robot girl who use a suit, even the poster guy doesn't even half bad even though he's little bit generic but still. every character that is not human or doesn't show their face actually looks really-really cool. but it just show that they have the talent to make a good character design, but they just didn't even try for the other character. it also doesn't help that they choose realistic approach for the artstyle instead of cartoony like valorant or overwatch or stylized it like apex legends
Even those characters have pretty big issues. The character designers don't really grasp how to use color contrasts, how to properly balance your two main colors with an accent color, and so on. It's probably indeed because they wanted to stress realism, figured that would carry the day, but that still doesn't excuse the incompetence of the design. Hero shooters need their heroes to pop, to stand out, to appeal. And you can do that with realism. We know this, because real life provides plenty of examples. All you have to do is look at pretty much any KPop band or Japanese idol group. But their character designs are, for the most part, the equivalent of people in coveralls, for all the color variety they offer. Not a good idea when you're trying to sell individuals.
it makes me so incredibly sad tbh, even if some devs r weird its still really upsetting to see 8 years of work go down the drain after 2 weeks regardless of the quality of the game :/
I've been seeing people on X screaming and yelling that Concord didn’t fail because of DEI but solely because it was a hero shooter and the characters were ugly, and in fact super diverse games are NOT actually failing because games where you can be gay like Baldur's Gate 3 have been so successful. And while those are certainly factors these people are conveniently forgetting that Concord's dev team was openly rude to gamers and clearly had no experience even playing games and, most importantly, BG3 and every other successful game with LGBT elements like Stardew Valley and Mass Effect are all RPGs where you can CHOOSE how much gay content you do or don't see and participate in, and these people don't see the irony that are proving that gamers are NOT huge -cists and -phobes, because they will by games with diversity and inclusiveness so long as the dev team isn't insulting and the DEI is organic and natural. This was not. The moment you advertise a game over surface level traits of the characters rather than the story and their backgrounds that make them interesting and likeable, your game is doomed to fail.
Speaking of successful games with LGBT elements, The Elder Scrolls Online is the one that comes to my mind. You see, I'm a straight white woman, and I live in a country and a culture where LGBT is in disgrace. So when I started playing ESO and happened upon a side quest from an elven woman who asked me to help save her wife, it surprised me. But it was one side quest among all of the others, so I just completed it and moved on to another area. Then there was a gay couple who offered me another side quest, something about gathering flowers that bear special meaning to them, since one of them is dying and the other wants to plant those on his grave. I don't remember that well, it was a long time ago. Anyway, I completed that quest too, and found it a little touching. This was my introduction to ESO. They didn't shove the "gay content" straight into my face, that would've alienated me, made me feel like I'm playing something I'm not supposed to. Instead they used the "gay content" in world building. A side quest, an NPC couple, a few lines of dialogue - bit by bit the developers have created a realm where LGBT elements naturally fit with the rest of the world. Now if I happen upon a gay couple in the game, I just think to myself: "yeah, this is normal". Considering the environment I grew up in, this is a huge win.
They forget the basics of economics in the game industry, gamers are consumers, They have the right to buy or not buy the games that game developers offer , make games that gamers like, then your game will sell, make games that game developers think gamers like, put identity politics in games then attack gamers who don't agree with game developers and your game will flop
See, that's the issue, i think. Companies don't see customers as consumers, they see us as walking wallets they can bribe out of money with flashy colors and a big budget. Ever wonder why a lot of companies end up copying each other until things become bland? Path of least resistance. Rich people have been trying to find a way to make the most money with the least effort for centuries. And in America, at least, there's a myth of a "holy grail" formula for the perfect media. "if we can just find the things that appeal to everyone and put them all in our products, we'll never have to try on anything again! Just follow the formula!" But the real world doesn't work that way, You can tell when a company is banking on their "holy grail formula" because when doesn't work, they get very confused and blame the consumers for "keeping their money from them".
Not necessarily. I'm sure plenty of games managed to do all those things and still make a profit. It depends on your budget and if your game has enough positive points for consumers to soldier through the idpol noise and still feel rewarded.

People never learn from history. Daikatana was in dev hell for 3 years and barely moved 8000 units on PC and 40,000+ domestically, and that was almost a quarter century ago. Duke Nukem Forever? 14 years in hell. Tanked in 2011. Neither came out claiming to have made a better horse buggy while the rest of the world had invented cars.
I want to remind everyone that there IS an audience for ""woke"" games. Overwatch goes without saying, but people GREW UP on games like undertale and life is strange (dodgy example i know), games with a specific mood ripe for that audience back then. That doesn't include the many apolitical games that those people happen to flock to either. (Danganronpa, Pokemon, Sonic...) Tumblr gamers are still gamers, and they have been key in making many games successful or at least more popular. The problem with concord (and games like it this generation) is that companies take the _aesthetic_ they're TOLD will garner that audience, but ignore the core behind that aesthetic that people actually care about. (Relatable characters, eye-catching visuals, complex writing, etc.) It's all substituted with Marvel-esque nonsense because they think they can catch the rest of the world too, even though nobody cares about that anymore. It's ""Woke"" in the sense that it's anything but, and THAT is what is the "tourist" attitude.
Yeah - its not "WOEK BAD" it's "Companies don't actually understand what the audience wants." Unfortunately, the HAHAHA WOKE BAD is the only take I ever see, not that companies have no respect for gamers and especially not for the people who would actually want this. Same thing with High Guardian Spice... It's ego and entitlement and a lack of real understanding of what people want from inclusivity and representation. And then you have Baldur's gate.

But as soon as people _suspected_ political correctness, it pivoted into the leftist masterminds causing the game's failure rather than the company making a game that was _doomed_ to fail.
Sincerely,
A black person who likes fun video games

@@rayvenkman2087 yeah. Gameplay wise, concord is better than Dustborn (just a bit )
Fun facts:
1) Baldur's gate 3 was in development for 6 years and probably no more than 4.5 years of active development.

Babe wake up Mujin just dropped a new video
I’ve seen people say the reason this game failed was because it’s “woke”, while I feel that is really not the case. It was just a bad game with bad art direction. Overwatch can be considered “woke” because the characters are diverse, but it’s still a success
You can make diverse characters, and still make them look good.
"Woke" is not just being diverse
"Woke" is being diverse just because
For example overwatch was a very diverse game with purpose
They were all there because it makes sense
An worldwide organization in different places all over the earth?
U need to have people from all over the earth
U need a moving fast character from Brazil? Lucio a black Brazilian who likes dancing
An stealthy hacker from Mexico?
Sombra
Every character makes sense
But in Concord? U have people who is supposed to move around and to jump like spiderman that looks like ur fat aunt
Baldur's gate 3 is woke... lol, the anti-woke crowd are idiots
Exactly right. The truth is, people actually DO like diverse characters. What they dont like is fat, ugly losers that look like twitter users.
Something interesting about concord is that it was a fundraised project from a company called ProbablyMonsters:
ProbablyMonsters CEO's name is Harold Ryan, and no, we don't know how he is related to the Jim Ryan because the later never disclosed information about his relatives.
Do you have a source for that? I understand that youtube hates links on comments so you can just tell me what to Google instead

It's interesting how both The airliner and the game have a lot in common in that regard. Both teams thought their products were the future, both teams spent a ridiculous amount of money, and both teams products severely underperformed in the market.

@@SilverNightbane
But still why compare those two?
If you're only comparing it with yet another game that's unpopular it'd make sense but why Concord of all games?
Concord is so bad that it literally needs a new tier for how bad it was so why out of all games that flopped (S squad KTJL for example) this guy chose.... Senran Kagura????
Mightier than Concord No. 9
Of course it didn't. It didn't have furries or underage characters.
@@zogwort1522 would it kill you to speak in good faith?
these kind of people will take any commercial failure and completely blame it on "woke".
28:08 Those with real passion won't quit at anything.
it makes me so incredibly sad tbh, even if some devs r weird its still really upsetting to see 8 years of work go down the drain after 2 weeks regardless of the quality of the game :/
To quote a certain Aussie audio nerd/musician with a pet python:
"The BIGGEST companies make the WORST junk."
that stinky dingus is so right
They forget the basics of economics in the game industry, gamers are consumers, They have the right to buy or not buy the games that game developers offer , make games that gamers like, then your game will sell, make games that game developers think gamers like, put identity politics in games then attack gamers who don't agree with game developers and your game will flop
I doubt they even learned any. And if they did, they just ignored them.
Just follow the formula!"
But the real world doesn't work that way, You can tell when a company is banking on their "holy grail formula" because when doesn't work, they get very confused and blame the consumers for "keeping their money from them".
Not necessarily. I'm sure plenty of games managed to do all those things and still make a profit. It depends on your budget and if your game has enough positive points for consumers to soldier through the idpol noise and still feel rewarded.
Considering how much gamers call for boycotts on games and those games end up profiting anyway, like genshin recently or COD and sports games for being repetitive? I don’t think gamers have as much influence they think they do
