i suggest your split step to not be so high (old fashioned way). You do split step to activate your muscle to have more reaction timing. If you do very high split step and maybe a short and small split step, the effect would be the same but high split step would be more energy comsuming. Short split step also executes much faster due to the tricks and delays your opponents do mostly which minimises the time you have to react. Still, your backhand clear was crazy and impressive!

split step should be more akin to widening your stance and dropping to the ground rather than a push off into the air like he tends to do.
