I dreamed of this car for 5 years before I was finally able to buy it in April. The best car I've ever driven. Always puts a smile to my face. No issues so far either.
I've had my Type R FK8 for over 4 years now, and if you get the chance to buy one, do it. It's an absolute driving machine. The looks are, of course, a matter of taste, but personally, I love this Gundam style.
This was always one of my dream cars. I was fortunate to be able to buy one new in 2019 with no mark ups. My car is bone stock except for a K & N high flow air filter and I replaced the stock rubber with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. It always puts a smile on my face when I drive it and is one of those cars that makes you want to take the long way home when you have to do errands. My car might as well be a family heirloom because I am never selling my car. Because I am not thrashing it at the track every weekend and haven't modified the engine beyond recognition, I know the car will continue to give me a trouble free ownership which means more money for gas and more time for driving. Thanks for the tips. BTW I think this car looks best in the dark metallic blue of the early models.
I own an FL5 Type R here in USA and I must say it is the most fun daily driver that I have ever owned in my over 40 years of driving. Of course it’s not perfect, but it is proof that a front wheel drive car can be a blast to drive.
As a FK8 owner, I heavily discourage you to get a FK8/FL5 to be your daily + weekend racer. The cooling issues being talked about, are not fixed by simple solutions like a different radiator. Be prepared to sink over $5,000 in mods and time into the platform, just to be able to go a few more laps. There are many owners, who get real with the issue and tell you not to get one, if you want to race them. The overheating issues are not due to a small radiator or something like that- the engine bays are simply too cramped for the turbocharged K20C1. Mind you, it's pushing 320+ HP from a 2 liter, so it's the turbo doing the heavy lifting. If you put that hot turbo AND CAT UNDER the intake charge pipes and IN BETWEEN the engine and the heat exchangers, you WILL get heat soak. A bigger radiator will only worsen this issue, because now you decreased the airflow to the engine bay to cool other components. Like I said, it's not an easy "slap some mods and call it a day" problem. This is a "this platform is silly" kind of problem. You need at least a engine hood with major cooling vents, at least one external oil cooler (2 is better...) another front mask with bigger opening for airflow, wrap on the intake charge pipe (no turbo or exhaust blanket- you need the airflow to cool it) and CAT delete to make a real difference. Guys, I'm not hating on the Type R- it is the best (stock) FWD sports car for the street. When I got mine, I was laughing in joy, all the way back home, carving through the country roads. But it is not for the track- as is. I don't consider a car, that can only do 5 laps, before it goes into limp mode a "track car". There are many cars, that you can slap a bigger radiator, oil cooler on and prop the hood in the rear and have fun all day. This ain't it.

My comment applies to Japan market samples. The shop I use that specializes in track tuning Lotuses is friendly with people who race these. Evidently the chassis is built with relatively thin steel and insufficient spot welds. If you put stiff suspension and sticky tires on it, then track it for a couple of seasons, the chassis gets flexy and spongy. It’s pretty much done, with not much that can be done about it. So best enjoyed as a street car, as it was designed.
Mate, people who drive this dont drink girly esspressos on their way to the Ralph Lauren shop, where they work. Owners of these IV mainline Redbull on their way to fist fight another owner for the wheel spacers from Ebay 😅
I’ve had mine since 30k km and done about 35k on it. The issues I’ve had: Clutch slip - new clutch needed at about 35k km, old owner’s fault Synchromesh issue - maybe due to the old driver but seems a common issue, cost £4600 to repair Clutch peddle creak - apparently common, easy fix lubricating it Rest wiper letting water in - removed rear light and resealed Creaking from suspension - replacement ball joints at 65k km Brake noise - small stones get stuck between the brake shield and disc, just poke at the shield with a stick and it comes out Seat bolsters - they’re wearing and creasing pretty fast Any other issues were caused by mods done by myself All cars have problems and I’m hoping no more issues as it’s a joy to drive and fits the family nicely, and the boot is huge, with room to fit a collapsible wheelchair and luggage with no problems
I've got the new FL5 version, had the older FK8 before, absolutely loved both. I sell coffee machines for a living and I absolutely need to hatch space. This is the best alternative to the classic trade-who-needs-space-for-his-tools Ute. It delivers boxes during the week and smiles on the weekend!
I've had my 2019 FK8 since new and I love it! Only issues I've had is the 2nd gear crunch which was fixed by changing the transmission fluid. And the black trim above the windows has started to bubble and peel which is hopefully getting replaced under warranty. Other than that, it's been fantastic! Looks are of course subjective, but personally I don't understand the hate! I love the Gundam styling of these! Allthough I do also really like the mature lines of the current gen.
I was a V8 tragic until i drove one of these things (and a WRX STI). Not a fan of the interior, but i could totally move past it. Any true car person should drove one, they are truely fantastic.
If you are watching from LHD countries, the infotainment was replaced in 2019 instead of RHD model's 2020. The newer model does work a lot better but sometimes I still have connectivity issues.
Missed a fair bit on the reliability issues. I am basing my list on the FK2, but these problems carry over, considering a lot of the parts are shared: - Suspension; particularly shocks failing, but also other components. - Gearbox synchros eating themselves. This is a thing and isn't driver error. I've seen multiple cars grind and refuse to go into gear whilst driving sedately. between first & second, second & third and sometimes into reverse from neutral. - Timing chain and tensioner issues. On start up, the car will sound like a van for a second or so, which is usually the first sign of the issue. It'll progress from there over time. - RUST and corrosion underneath the car, particularly at the back. Corrosion on the wheel arches as well. I've seen this becoming a real concern with the FK2, especially in the UK, so I'd keep it in mind with the FK8. - Water in the rear spoiler. Not sure how it gets in there, but doesn't find its way out. Same with the rear lights.
I like mine a lot. 2nd gear crunch is a thing sometimes. And the front lip...you need to be mindful of it when goung up any inclines/declines. Not a low car but low enough youll scrape on stuff you wouldnt have on a normal car.
The witchcraft that makes the FK8 handle and the manual gearbox is the absolute best I’ve used. It was on my list to replace my 2013 BRZ, but I ended up with a reasonably low km 2016 Audi RS3. I would love to try an FL5 though.
Looks like we just need the FK2 and legendardary and hard to get EK9 Type R to be reviewed. All Civic Type R will be completed. We'll until FL5 which is still current model and not yet exactly "used" yet.
6:25 - I don't get this complaint at all. Are you planning to use the rear camera to take pictures for your upcoming holiday or something? It's perfectly adequate for its intended purpose: letting the driver know if there's something or someone behind the car when reversing. I've never had any issue, in snow or heavy rain.
Intake valve coking was really common when PCV systems were simpler , when GDI started becoming widespread. It's not quite a old wives tale at this point but has anyone actually seen complaints about Honda intake valves coking with direct injection? Honda has a pretty sophisticated PCV oil separation system going back a decade now (a very easy way to see this is that the k-series direct injected naturally aspirated engines actually have a oil drainback specifically for the valve cover baffles).
The back seats not being comfy isn't surprising it's a type R ....if u want comfy back seats get an Accord if ur a Honda fan but there's many that do just as well without the price tag. Mechanics no what I'm getting at
The condition of the interior/exterior of a fk8 with give you a clue about it's overall condition. Tells you a lot about the TLC from the previous owner(s).
Too poxy looking for me, but I have driven a mates type R (exactly the same as this one, same colour too) and it is a fine, fine machine to drive. I won't swap my turbo FG XR6 for one, but credit where credit is due.
True riding machine! Only too bad they seem to hold value too well so prices are bit out of reach. Personally looks has grown on me and really love over riced style. Looks serious and so different from other cars on the road. Would be also nice to see reviev 10th gen normal fk7 Civic with 1,5t engine!
Dude if you go ripping badges off a car and lose paint, that's your issue, not one with the car. And by the way, I think it looks stunning. The new one looks way too toned down for a type R.
I never heared of a failed high pressure fuel pump in the K20C1s but the low pressure in tank fuel pump breaks down due to swelling pump vanes. The A/C condensers keep on failing due to bad quality. The K20C1 does not have issues with clogging inlet valves. The Honda engineers made a clever decision with the position of the high pressure fuel injectors. They spray up towards the inlet valves to help clean them when theire open. It is worth mentioning that high quality fuel helps a lot preventing carbon build up. Everything else Jim mentioned is correct especially the lack of mechanical sympathy some dudes have.
@yankeepapa3572 as I mentioned common issue. The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank and pumps the fuel at low pressure to the front. Jim talks about the high pressure fuel pump which is located on top of the engine and is driven from the intake camshaft. It receives the low pressure from the tank and pressurises it for the high pressure fuel injectors to operate as intended. They usually never fail. The high pressure fuel pump is mechanical driven from the intake camshaft via an extra cam lobe.
@LoveLikeaHurricane unfortunately not. Honda does not provide many information of that. I have seen a picture of it from a demonstration. At least I can not find it again. You can imagine why Honda put the injectors that horizontal in the turbocharged L15 and K20C1.
Just on wipertech wipers I have purchased them for my nissan . While they do a great job at cleaning windscreen , thing that drive me nuts is that they sit higher off the windscreen than the original wipers and now I can see wipers sticking out when driving and looking at the road😂
Could a Swift Sport with some subtle mods keep one of these honest on a tight and twisty race track? Not sure if it could, though physics dictates it'd be more economical on tyres, brakes, fuel and all wear items being lighter, a jolly sight lighter. What was that mantra from Lotus? Just add weight, more batteries, then add more weight again, and she'll be right mate? Was something like that.
I love manual sports cars. The looks for me Are amazing! And it’s Honda so I wouldn’t worry too much Ofcourse maintenance is important but nah this all day everyday over a golf
You can’t go wrong with that. There’s no problems that the aftermarket can’t fix and bridge any gaps between the fk8 and the fl5. Hell, even the integra type s.

As good as they are I feel like going turbo and semi luxurious isn’t really the type r ethos. They were always high revving lightweight relatively basic cars.
Supposed adults are too busy with their image to actually drive these but hey if you wanna give 35 percent more money for the exact same engine transmission less steering feel and want to lose at a roll race to the old one go ahead M8 buy the new one Btw if you go second hand you can come close to buying it for half the price
@@kevinbarry71 why would you give double the money for the same thing, BCS of emissions it pulls less and BCS of the suspension changes from the limited with the new tire wheel combo steering feel really is less and rocks you around everywhere in the type r mode if the track or asphalt isn't perfect Yes the interior is better and perhaps the build quality though we don't know None of those are really essential for a hot hatch experience

Love theses, not the best looking but stil like them a lot (Honda fanboy). Having spent a lot of time in FK2's and a few Megane RS's, I'll rather have the Megane TBH. Is the ride in the FK8 as bad as the FK2? FK2 is quite on the firm side
Is ot possible for you ReDriven guys to get yours hands on a Subaru Levorg? Find out what’s good, and what goes wrong with it? Couldn’t find any video of that model on the channel.
Apart from that absolutely hideous thing they call a rear wing I don’t mind these, apart from the ride quality on our shit Aussie roads which for me is on the firm side.
Would you guys choose a used fk8 or a used GR Yaris? Both sit around the same market price perhaps the Yaris is even a little cheaper in the Used market.
Went through this last month bought a used fk8. The Yaris I could have had a few years newer and lower ks but I just didn’t enjoy the Yaris. I could only afford the poverty spec not the rallye. And apart from its launch from standstill the fk8 felt better in every respect. Yaris you sit way to high and was also surprised it had quite a bit of understeer. Also the back Yaris seats are useless for adults and the boot is tiny.
Transmission probs not confined to 1st -> 2nd crunch. Also 1st and 4th lockouts, and jumps out of 3rd and 4th. Honda never acknowledged probs officially. When i30N had transmission probs, Hyundai quickly had a warranty recall to fit redesigned and upgraded parts. And FK8s don’t only overheat on track. Give it the beans on a canyon road when temps are 80F, and the CPU will reduce power. A Focus RS will never do this.
If it's popping out of gear that's a warranty replacement asap. That's a serious problem. The 2nd gear crunch they've been less inclined to do anything about...until it starts popping out.
They both have issues. Neither can be tracked for long, but the Type R would last longer and be faster as well on the track. Also, you can cleanly install a spare tire from Honda parts that can be ordered, in to the trunk of the Type R FK8. You can't do that without cutting things up in the GR corolla. GR corolla is much more fun in that it is smaller, and likely do better in autocross, mountain roads.

6. Hood scoop leaks water from the gasket area (not from the hood scoop opening). Leading to a coilpack/spark plug issue on the LH side
7. Coolant expansion tank will leak sooner than you think
8. Throttle body rubber will be torn sooner than you think
I do know that earlier years they have issues with welds in the hatch area. The later years have a patch weld over it.
The issues I’ve had:
Clutch slip - new clutch needed at about 35k km, old owner’s fault
Synchromesh issue - maybe due to the old driver but seems a common issue, cost £4600 to repair
Clutch peddle creak - apparently common, easy fix lubricating it
Rest wiper letting water in - removed rear light and resealed
Creaking from suspension - replacement ball joints at 65k km
Brake noise - small stones get stuck between the brake shield and disc, just poke at the shield with a stick and it comes out
Seat bolsters - they’re wearing and creasing pretty fast
Any other issues were caused by mods done by myself
All cars have problems and I’m hoping no more issues as it’s a joy to drive and fits the family nicely, and the boot is huge, with room to fit a collapsible wheelchair and luggage with no problems
Where i'm from these hold value even used with high mileage.
Allthough I do also really like the mature lines of the current gen.
if this car is UK produced, then the paint quality is par for the course. UK cars are always sub-par. my FN2 had major paint issues
I am basing my list on the FK2, but these problems carry over, considering a lot of the parts are shared:
- Suspension; particularly shocks failing, but also other components.
@14:01 As an automotive engineer I can tell you 17 or 18 inch wheels are the way to go for performance and ride quality reasons.
If it's available, buy an FK2 Type-R. It has a volume knob as standard😅
So does the FK8 on 19, 20, and 21 models. But they’re a little more pricy.
I almost bought one of these until I read about the 2nd gear grind. Even happened on my test drve. Car only had 15K miles on it.
Literally just bought one, love it so far
I love that it looks like a scaled up Hotwheels Car I think the new model looks boring in comparison.
I love it. In base trim not so much. Its just the rear which seems a bit odd (but still much better then some of the Chinese stuff coming out)
Looks like we just need the FK2 and legendardary and hard to get EK9 Type R to be reviewed. All Civic Type R will be completed. We'll until FL5 which is still current model and not yet exactly "used" yet.
This is the video I’ve been waiting years for
6:25 - I don't get this complaint at all.
Love them ❤ reminds me of my time in Japan 😊
The back seats not being comfy isn't surprising it's a type R ....if u want comfy back seats get an Accord if ur a Honda fan but there's many that do just as well without the price tag. Mechanics no what I'm getting at
I love both the previous and current Civic Type R design.
The condition of the interior/exterior of a fk8 with give you a clue about it's overall condition. Tells you a lot about the TLC from the previous owner(s).
Would love to see some 200SX/Silvia content
Hey there! Love the vid. Could you do a review on older civic such as an eg9 sedan or eg6 hatch? Or maybe an ek sedan/hatch
I was able to get a decent sound by putting deadening in the doors and using top the line alpine tweeters
My FK8 fuel pump kaput at only 16k km
@yankeepapa3572 as I mentioned common issue. The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank and pumps the fuel at low pressure to the front. Jim talks about the high pressure fuel pump which is located on top of the engine and is driven from the intake camshaft. It receives the low pressure from the tank and pressurises it for the high pressure fuel injectors to operate as intended. They usually never fail. The high pressure fuel pump is mechanical driven from the intake camshaft via an extra cam lobe.
do you happen to have the document or video for their method of spraying towards inlet valve, I would like to check it out
@LoveLikeaHurricane unfortunately not.
Love the car. But when it comes to these types of cars the 6th and 7th generation is what I prefer
No but its a far more sensible Car to own.
No one, literally no one hates the styling on the road, in the real world. Only on the Internet is considered "childish'.
No, a lot dont like the look...😅
That's just not true. The newer model is toned down and looks great.
People compliment it all the time. They find it exciting. The new one is also nice, but this is not horrendous.
I've had one for 6 years and most people tell me they love it
It's a polarising design.
Waiting for the day a 2019+ Lexus ES300H (to compare with the late model crown you guys covered)shows up on your channel
I sooooooo want to buy a 2020 model es because they added full speed adaptive cruise control + they are priced well
But I wanted to know what to lookout for when buying and love you guys’ videos
Ps: I absolutely love how the civic type r looks in the right environment
You should put "10th gen" type R to differentiate this and the current Type R. Can you do a review over the 10th Gen Si next, I would love to know!!!
Like the ingenious things my for volume adjustment in the later models
I hate how everyone is calling this childish. Honda will never take a chance again. It looks like a cool concept car and it’s functional.
As good as they are I feel like going turbo and semi luxurious isn’t really the type r ethos.
They were always high revving lightweight relatively basic cars.
American fan here. What was that 2 door Honda shown in the background of the wiper tech ad?
Honda HRV.
The ones made in Japan have superior build quality to those built in the UK? Oh the shock! New version. looks more like something an adult would drive
Supposed adults are too busy with their image to actually drive these but hey if you wanna give 35 percent more money for the exact same engine transmission less steering feel and want to lose at a roll race to the old one go ahead M8 buy the new one
Btw if you go second hand you can come close to buying it for half the price
@ I do love how those with not enough money to buy a newer one try to act as though the old one is superior
@@kevinbarry71 why would you give double the money for the same thing, BCS of emissions it pulls less and BCS of the suspension changes from the limited with the new tire wheel combo steering feel really is less and rocks you around everywhere in the type r mode if the track or asphalt isn't perfect
Yes the interior is better and perhaps the build quality though we don't know
None of those are really essential for a hot hatch experience
@@kero-x8l because I don't wish to buy something that had the ever loving shit beat out of it by some dumbass who bought the car to mistreat. If that's OK with you, by all means. I go with new, as long as that's OK with you
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
This is what a hot hatch should look like. It should be outrageous, the only other one that pulls this off is the RS
FL5 is the one. Love mine!
I love Innovative knobs to play with
I wonder if Going from GT86 / BRZ (facelifts) to this is an upgrade?
Becaus yes it's much much faster more practical too, but it's FWD vs RWD ..
Very capeable car though , and looks a lot of fun to drive , but will I miss the RWD agility and natural balance ?
I think i rather have the GT86 as the track car....if you ever plan on going to track.
Love theses, not the best looking but stil like them a lot (Honda fanboy).
Having spent a lot of time in FK2's and a few Megane RS's, I'll rather have the Megane TBH.
Is the ride in the FK8 as bad as the FK2? FK2 is quite on the firm side
Best civic. Pure Samurai
Can you guys review a bmw 540i (g30) i think that would be a really good review to watch
Could you review the Toyota GR Yaris and the Ford Focus RS?
Is ot possible for you ReDriven guys to get yours hands on a Subaru Levorg? Find out what’s good, and what goes wrong with it? Couldn’t find any video of that model on the channel.
Dude this car looks as sexy as it gets. Nobody who owns this complaining about the aesthetics of this
8:22 praising seats that look that badly worn is questionable for a 2017
Apart from that absolutely hideous thing they call a rear wing I don’t mind these, apart from the ride quality on our shit Aussie roads which for me is on the firm side.
Why doesn't anyone ever call this the FK8? They're never specific
As cool as the original kind of all wheel drive HR-V? Not even.
But a pretty good motor car none the less.
that's why build in Japan
because you do not have balls to say
the don't build a car in England
Europeans, take notice. A car that is as fast as any european car AND reliable as a Civic. Absolutely brilliant ❤.
@ totally agree. I feel the fk8 as a complete package really outshines the yaris. Only youd go broke fast upgrading the fk8 lol
Would be great if you could please review the VB WRX 2021 onwards?
My FK2 404bhp is the one for my weekend joy
Get hondata then a custom tune! it’s a beast at 25psi.
Always liked these.. awesome cars
Italians will adore these wipers.
Yeah, so what's up with the super harsh ride in R mode at the track?
Deciding which I'd prefer. This or the GR Corolla ?
Tough decision
They both have issues. Neither can be tracked for long, but the Type R would last longer and be faster as well on the track. Also, you can cleanly install a spare tire from Honda parts that can be ordered, in to the trunk of the Type R FK8. You can't do that without cutting things up in the GR corolla.
GR corolla is much more fun in that it is smaller, and likely do better in autocross, mountain roads.
i really hope to own one of these one day.
