- Today we are checking out the speedrun demo competition of the brand new Mario Fan game: Super Mario & The Rainbow Stars! This fan game is something straight out of my dreams, as it has phenomenal sprite work, incredible music, and feels authentically Nintendo (even though it's not)! Shoutout's to the entire Rainbow Star's Dev team on making such an awesome game so far!

About Super Mario & the Rainbow Stars: One day, the Mario Bros were hanging out near their house until they suddenly received a letter from Peach. They've been invited for the Star Festival! Before that festival starts, they're planning to take a trip with a hot air balloon. Things turn out for the worse once something goes wrong...
Everyone gets scattered, and now it's up to Mario to find his friends, as well as retrieve the Rainbow Stars, which were scattered by the newly awakened Starnox. Mario must get these Rainbow Stars, otherwise the plan of plunging the world into darkness might succeed... Thankfully Mario will be accompanied by many different partners alongside his journey.
From a star kid to a ghostly spirit, and from a blooper pirate to the dark star itself, safe to say Mario will encounter many unique friends and foes on his adventure! This adventure will take you through the archipelago where Yoshis reside, an abstract forest inhabited by many different ghosts, a sky island which holds all 4 seasons at once and more!

I would definitely recommend going back and replaying the tutorial level again and this time reading the signs. The signs teaches you all your different move sets. I also really look forward to your first water level, could be a nice surprise for ya 😉 DGR 5ever (cuz 5 is greater than 4)

With all the Nintendo takedowns it’s brought more attention to the romhacking/fangame-making community, which in turn has made said romhacks/fangames even more popular

Just downloaded it and my son and I will definitely be checking this out later, this game looks amazing.
This fan game looks extremely promising! A whole lot of care and effort put into making it!
On a side note, could people in the comments stop saying that game is day 1 on-sight for Nintendo? People reply to every Nintendo fan game like this and most of them are unaffected.
I don't think Nintendo really cares about fan games as long as people don't try to make money off them.

@@Maedhrossss The huge amount of pokémon fangames want to have a few words with you. Unless they may damage the image of the product, most of them are left alone. And yeah, I know the history of Pokémon Uranium, and that kinda enters in the territory I mentioned (the atomic threat connotations are still hard to sell for japanese people, as far as I know, so it can damage the image in their opinion, and even then they didn't get a C&D and it has been continued later).
Also, games like Super Mario Bros X.
The questions to ask are:
- "Can your fangame damage the image of their product?" If yes, you better stay below Nintendo's radar. If not, they probably would leave you alone.
- "Are you remaking one of their games?" If yes, you probably are damaging their sells, because they probably have already released, or are going to release, either a remake or a port. So yeah, that's going down (AM2R, by example, and in this case it felt like Nintendo was being as nice as they could while protecting their interest, because they LET them release the fangame before sending the C&D)
- "Are you directly ripping assets from their games?" If yes, they may send a C&D. You are stealing their job. They are likely to not pay too much attention, but it IS a reason.
If all of those questions' answers are "No", your are more than likely safe. As proven, again, by the miriad of pokémon fangames.
DGR doesn't seem to be playing this game right, not that there's a wrong way to play it I suppose. But he completely skipped the tutorial thus not knowing about any of his moves. And you can kick the bombs back in the first boss, I think that you need to spin jump on them, because as he found out, just jumping into them doesn't work. I'm glad that I watched someone else play this yesterday because this isn't the best experience I've seen. Sorry for being salty.
DGR's voice acting is top notch though, I'll give him that.
He spends the whole time repeating how the thinks the game is great, yet he rushes through the levels not caring about the secrets or the tutorial
Sadly this is a typical DGR moment for ya. I love watching him but sometimes he rushes through stuff and complains eventually that he doesn't know what to do lol
Yea im usually always the one to skip tutorials and just figure out things as I play, but I just said sure when it offered because I wanted to experience the WHOLE thing, and im glad I did. Such good mechanic implementations into your movements and options. Really enjoy what this game has done.

This was so cool looking. I love when Dave gushes over a new game he discovers, means we're in for a good time. And this hack was just perfect. Hats off to the creators.

They should reskin the game and release it that way
They could but it would probably be a bit of work to change it. It’s also hard to tell how well it would do as a new IP

I remember some early fan games; when I was stuck on the 486, they entertained me.
This is AWESOME!!! I also like the mario bros nose bobbing animation.😂 The animations and the art style and smooth looking gameplay is peak.
I just played this game last night...
...the level select made it look big, Mario's basic movement (even with just the idle) is so expressive, and yet the entire game is not even 1 gigabyte. That's when you kow how good the game is.

i missed the naming method for the toads at first, when it got to Pilo T did i then realise what was happening
"might be better than what nintendo would make" if it was a nintendo game it would of began with mario luigi and peach and a normal looking toad entering the hot air balloon(or 2 normal looking toads for coop) then the rainbow star storm would happen and mario(and whoever is play coop with the main character) would wake up on the beach, there would be no dialogue just the intro cinematic, also unless this was a 3d mario game starry would be a power up
I love how the bomb explosion says "bomb" like in SMB 2 All Stars. That's some pretty good attention to Mario lore.

This is the most impressive mario fan game I've seen since the super mario land 2.5 game where you could do the zelda level, brinstar, pokemon, and mario galaxy level etc. That game was so cool.

You can throw back the big bombs
This game feels like a little mix of Wario Land and Donkey Kong '94. The music is also recognizable, but I can not put my finger on that.
Oh wow, tbh I wanted make an idea of Rainbow stars. Where there are different lands and each has specific color stars and using them to get the true Star which has incredible powers and when all 7 are brought together it creates a miracle

It be great if theyd adopt audio dialog that's optional when text comes up. Unique voices for each character of couse. Keeping with tradition with characters who have a voice already.

Dave just speedran the tutorial and only learned two things from it. Luckily he figured them out later. By the way the flag blocks are impassible for enemies and the goomba blocks are impassible for the player, the sign isn't an enemy he's just floating. Dave got it backwards. So if you see goomba blocks you can't go through them.
They need to add those anti cheese blocks you can't wall jump off of to Mario Maker 3, it's so annoying when people use wall jumps to cheese your level.
Dave loves this so much he skips so much of it at the beginning.
