Been fly fishing for 50+ years (mostly western trout, plus plenty of bonefish/flats trips and salmon snagging in AK), but only been working hard on my carp game for the past 3-4 years. They never cease to amaze and frustrate me. Luckily I can drive 5 minutes, fish 2 hours in a peaceful mud flat, maybe catch one and harass several others, and it's made my day. Love it! Great video.
Poor Man's Bone Fish was what I used to call them back in the mid 80's. Yeah, I'm old. But love that I don't have to fly to the tropics to catch tailing fish! I have fished the Keys for bones and took a group to Belize for baby tarpon and bones. Now I just drive a few minutes from home to play in the mud.
Long ago, one of us hooked an enormous carp and yelled, "This one's a Steven Carper!" (our former Prime Minister was Steven Harper). Since then we, except our bud Steve, call all HUGE carp 'Steve'.
I agree with you on the Bow fishing part, I have even told some of my old Bowfishing partners, "yes I used to do that", that if you ever caught one on a fly rod, you'd never shoot another arrow at one again
Thanks Ben, as always! Just heard from a friend about success with “milling” (stillwater ) carp using a dry/dropper rig. I’m with you, these fish are usually not “playas” in my experience, but I’m going to try it on my next trip to the used-needle garden.
Here in Australia we call them Mud Marlin, great fun to catch on fly fishing tackle. Unlike most other countries we usually kill them because they are classed as a pest and have serious negative impact on our native freshwater fish species. They exist in plague proportions and are very easy to find.
When Barry’s book came out I bought it and never looked back . Used to hang out at the shop and talk with Brad and Berry a lot about it . Miss those guys . Oh well carp on
Two things. 1 He said poop! 2. The bow fishermen dig at the end= perfect. Thanks for getting Monday started correctly. Looking forward to a mid-week fishing trip vid with plenty of commentary and ballbusting.
This is very helpful info. More often than not I encounter carp that just laying there motionless until I move my arm for a cast and even if I manage to not spook them they still don't give carp about my presentation! I think I'll start putting a little time into carp fishing
I ❤️Carp! Lol. The best freshwater fights I’ve ever had, (so far)..especially an accidental 33” on a 4wt. when fishing for White bass. Great vid as always..you make my Monday’s a Good day!😀 Some in Texas call em “The other Redfish” I just call em carp..much shorter. I’ve drank my share of warm beer too.Mmmmm. Stay Huge Ben..like some of those Golden Bones! 😜
Had a similar experience with a carp on a 4wt, except I was in a non-angling kayak, so I went for a freshwater sleigh-ride for 15 min. Always go barbless, because releasing a carp from a kayak is not easy.
Late to the party here but the ticket for keeping beer cold is a heavy wool tube sock. One can fit 3+ beers depending on how big the sock is. Won’t keep it cold all day but it does well and doesn’t take a ton of extra space And alternate carp name: white trash redfish
Bow fishing for snakeheads should be encouraged. There are mulberry trees around the Jefferson Memorial where the carp line up to swallow the berrys when they drop. Large carp. Hungry carp. The freaking things are locomotives.
Plenty of carp in the clean streams, small rivers and reservoirs (in Maryland/Patuxent River for one)that aren't muddied up. I was comparing them to a "freshwater bonefish" analogy (when you compare two things)! since the late seventies. I used to take friends from time to time and laugh when they hooked up. They had no idea the power of these fish are. When you set the hook hold on to your hat they're going to run and in streams they have cover and fallen trees etc.
Clooping ! There's a word for that behavior! I had no idea and have been wondering what the heck it was. The are so many clooping pods of carp on the snake river and I have had many frustrated dry fly attempts in trying to catch some. Glad to know it's not an ideal scenario for catching carp.
Last time we had that swarm of cicadas we would hook them up and use them to get the carp to jump for them. I know, i know, its live bait, but it was for the kids...
In East Tennessee I heard the locals call them Bugle-mouth Bass when they weren't being profane. Watching them take a dry fly intended for a trout, as often happens in the trash line on Chilhowee Lake in late summer, can be aggravating. Fun to catch though.
Rubber lips. Poop fish hahaha! Great video. Theirs tons of huge carp by my house but never get those suckers to eat. Sometimes I think they don’t eat any way haha thanks for the advice
I fly fish for grass carp (bugle trout) in a golf course pond and it’s a blast. They feed at the water’s edge in about a foot of water and will spook at the tiniest of false movements. I use mainly a black/purple wooly worm that doesn’t imitate anything in nature but it works on carp. Go figure.
I'm legitimately going to try this at my local lake. The fish are a little more spooky because of bow-fisherman though. They still haven't found where all the fish are stacked up yet...
We don't call them Mud Marlin in Australia for nothing. They're classed as pest you're not supposed return to the water by law (in most states) you have dispatch them and leave 10 meters from the shore line.
Keep a mesh(Lingerie?) bag and a rope stringer in your bag. Put warm bear in bag, use the stringer to anchor the bag to the bank of the river/streamer. Put bag in water. Beer will b cold in 5-10 min.
I had a 5/7 Scientific anglers that I was super excited to use this year and my uncle was getting out of my car and he snapped it broke it was actually pretty sad I never charge them for that and I never will but I haven’t gone because I like the equipment now and I don’t have the money to do it thanks to Covid

Reformed bow fisher here. Caught my first one on the fly last week. Wading in mud for 2 hours has never been so satisfying
I’ve gotta be honest, this arguably one of my favorite fishing videos🤣
I Agree! Carp fly fishing is the best. They never tire out. That's the best thing about them!
Long ago, one of us hooked an enormous carp and yelled, "This one's a Steven Carper!" (our former Prime Minister was Steven Harper). Since then we, except our bud Steve, call all HUGE carp 'Steve'.

Hey Ben, can we add the name "mud bone" to the official names 🤔
When Barry’s book came out I bought it and never looked back . Used to hang out at the shop and talk with Brad and Berry a lot about it . Miss those guys . Oh well carp on
Golden Garbage, Pond Pigs, Bugle Lips, Golden Sewer Trout...there are so many good ones!!
Good stuff. I remember meeting a few of the Big Horn guides back in the day who would always fish for carp in the reservoir on their days off.
THANK YOU! this was the one fish the held me over for striper season here on Long island!
Can you do a video on different types of hook sets. That would help a lot, love your stuff and keep fishing.
I love catching Carp on a fly! Great advice. They really do get your heart pumping when they move on your fly.
This is the video I have been looking for! Thank you!
Two things. 1 He said poop! 2. The bow fishermen dig at the end= perfect. Thanks for getting Monday started correctly. Looking forward to a mid-week fishing trip vid with plenty of commentary and ballbusting.
Been waiting for this one, love it! How about bayou bonefish or sewer salmon?
I love sewer salmon!!!
sewer salmon is solid!
I'll add my vote for sewer salmon!
This is very helpful info. More often than not I encounter carp that just laying there motionless until I move my arm for a cast and even if I manage to not spook them they still don't give carp about my presentation! I think I'll start putting a little time into carp fishing
Alternative names for approval: Donkey Lips, Mud Donkey, and Pond Pigs.
I like Pond Pig ....thats my vote .
I’ve heard the name “swamp donkey” as well
Here in Australia there also known as mud Marlin.
I love your videos and 100% agree with your take on bow fishing.

Ben- relative to Charlie’s comment, is it still OK to call them (white bass) Wipe Ass? Asking for a friend.
Had a similar experience with a carp on a 4wt, except I was in a non-angling kayak, so I went for a freshwater sleigh-ride for 15 min. Always go barbless, because releasing a carp from a kayak is not easy.
Dude I dig this channel! I’ve been tight lining for carp and buff for many years. Getting excited about the fly! Great info man! Thanks
I am slowly becoming a fan
I work with Cyprinids professionally, you will NEVER know them fully lol smart fish.
US: Hell, another damn carp
England: oi a trophy common carp mate
Ben: be the mud

The carp fishing below the sewer overflow catches fire after a good rain. Just have to clean the tp off your fly
Alex Ciocca ... or not. I’ve always got a few “turd flies” in my carp box. Match the crap!
This might be your best vid and I dig them all🤘
In Germany aka birthplace of beer they drink it warm. The super "Cold" beer is just to cover the flavor.....
The mud marlin is the go to in Australia 🇦🇺
great just great, it is exactly as you explain it and the video is fun to wacth
“What ever you do, don’t trout set”
I don’t know why, but I laughed so hard I woke up my family
Bow fishing for snakeheads should be encouraged.

A wise man once said. "If you can drink warm beer you can drink beer anytime"
Here, on the Los Angeles River, we call them “dookie fish”. But I say that with all the love in my heart.
Old Wyoming t-shirt slogan...
"Some states were made for carp, our condolences to them".
Plenty of carp in the clean streams, small rivers and reservoirs (in Maryland/Patuxent River for one)that aren't muddied up. Trout in the west, gulf to the south, carp not for me but still appreciate the time it took to make the video! Stay huge!!!
lol absolutely agree with your choices of naming the poopfish
i like calling carps quasiMUDo's
best episode. nicely done.
Great video! Thanks.
I am HUGE follow. Thank you.
We call them Swamp Trout in Australia
Carp in Australia are known as mud marlin, scaled sh1t, fertiliser fish, pom fish, or more commonly just "pass me the knife".
Golden bones is a great nickname for carp!!
Clooping ! There's a word for that behavior! I had no idea and have been wondering what the heck it was. The are so many clooping pods of carp on the snake river and I have had many frustrated dry fly attempts in trying to catch some. Glad to know it's not an ideal scenario for catching carp.
I shit my pants laughing at prairie permit with the pompano hahahahaha
Rocky Mountain Redfish, mud donkey, scum salmon, pond pig, etc.

Wow, that was a great video.
Bugle mouth bass. You are one funny dude.
How about Swamp salmon? I saw that one today and although I know nothing about Carp or Fly fishing for that matter I found it funny!!
Not to brag but I have caught laid up carp, but ur right they are tough when they are just chillin
Rubber lips. Poop fish hahaha! Great video. Theirs tons of huge carp by my house but never get those suckers to eat. Sometimes I think they don’t eat any way haha thanks for the advice
We used to catch them on corn or with doughballs. I imagine a yellow glo bug would work well.
the bow fishing comments had me rollin haha
Well done! Knew this would be a good one.
How do you not have 500k subscribers!?
You forgot to say "pro tip" when learnin' us about the backpack beer
Yes! Thank you

I always see carp jumping and splashing when I'm bass fishing and can never get one to bite so hopefully this will help me out!!
I'm legitimately going to try this at my local lake. The fish are a little more spooky because of bow-fisherman though. They still haven't found where all the fish are stacked up yet...

Great Plains Bone Fish
Thanks for the video, been working on this for way too long now. Still. No. Carp🤦♂️
Fights on tenkara are awesome!! No drag to rely on!
Thats all true! We need to be just perfect... if we do something wrong we pay for it!
Canadian Salmon are fun to catch, and readily take dries as well as streamers & woolies in Northern New England. Under-rated.
The ole ditch missile
🔥
Love me some toilet trout.
I don't get the prairie permit analogy. Maybe drunk, but please explain..
brass bones, fools golden bones, copper bones, bronze bones

Carp= the ultimate eyor fish
Midwest Salmon. I caught one on accident. What a beast
Umm we have salmon in the Midwest already
Prairie Permit! Thanks for that...
Love it
Colorado bonefish!!!
Weirdly enough the fly I've had the most success with for carp have been salmon eggs patterns
How about the Coney island whitefish? Can you also do a video about fly fishing for suckers? Stay huge!
I had a 5/7 Scientific anglers that I was super excited to use this year and my uncle was getting out of my car and he snapped it broke it was actually pretty sad I never charge them for that and I never will but I haven’t gone because I like the equipment now and I don’t have the money to do it thanks to Covid
It was a 9. # 5/6 Scientific angler first fly rod ever
I've caught huge goldfish. No carp yet lol
Nice browns!
Rodney Dangerfish... Rodneys, for short.
Cloopers, for me, are the easiest carp to catch.
