It's important to note that after you have been registered as an OCI for 5 years and have resided in India for just 1 year, you can apply for Indian citizenship again, granted you are willing to give up your remote citizenship.

Hi. I came over from India when I was eight years old on my mothers passport. I don’t have my own Indian passport. I have been a naturalized USA citizen since 1988. I am trying to get my OCI card. I’m told I first need to get a renunciation certificate. First step, I need to go to the government website and fill out the form. When I click on renunciation the first thing that comes up with is it asks for Indian passport info, WHICH I DON’T HAVE. Please help

Hey, try to get a Visitor Visa on your Candian Passport, legally you should not travel with your Indian Passport after 11th October, if you choose to do so there will be a penalty when you surrender your Indian passport to the embassy.

To be eligible you need to be of Indian origin, i.e your parents, grandparents etc. To be sure of your eligibility clarify with Indian embassy.

You cann apply for an oci while.surrendering your Indian passport and can travel visa free, or yes get a visit visa om your foreign passport if it is urgent since oci can take 3 months to process.
If you become a US citizen through naturalization and do a name change do you know what documents are needed for renunciation and OCI? Based on my research, you fill the renunciation using your old name (since that is the one on Indian passport) and submit a COPY of court order with name change. But what about OCI card?
Not sure but probably same documents would ne required, best to reach out to the nearest embassy to be sure.

That is the case only of you have not recieved the foreign passport yet, and why would you need a visa if you travel with Indian passport.

The valid visas remain valid even after surrendering passport and can be used with new acquired citizenship/passport

Hey i do not have a reference, but dont think so visa remains valid on surrendered passport, since visa are linked to the passport number once surrendered the passport do not exist and so would be visa.

I am not sure but if they find it out, you either need to sell it or transfer the ownership to an Indian national.

Hey, you should not travel on your Indian passport, as long as you use your American passport it is fine, however yes you should surrender is asap, and get an Oci card.

Oh boy I got a Maldivian passport easy cuz my dad is of Maldives origin and mom in Indian. And I don't have a certificate of citizenship I just was handed a passport cuz I had already applied for I'd card while I was in India when I was young which made things easier. Hey, sure you can travel on your canadian passport any time, your OCI application can be applied from UK it is an online application either ways, embassy just need to verify your details. Be advised OCI process can take up to 3 months.

3 months after you have been certified as a Canadian.(citizenship date not passport issue date) No need to rush but do not not use the Indian passport for travelling at all.

i am applying renunciation for my mother. she got usa citizenship in 1985 and her indian passport expired in 1983. i checked renunciation document checklist on vfs website it says "If the applicant was naturalized after the date of expiry of the latest held Indian passport. A notarized affidavit may be submitted explaining the background and the reason for this gap".
i am confused why do they need affidavit? her passport was already expired before she got citizenship. How could she use expired passport after she got citizenship to travel to india? i'll really appericate if you explain this. Thanks
Hey, i dont think so it is only about if she could travel with a expired passport, in the renunciation process they ask for the current passport to be submitted which they then cancel it, in your case there is no passport therefore a affidavit for the government files probably.
If you want to get indian citizenship back you can get so in just 1 year of living in india after 5 years of your OCI card.

She wants to apply for OCI card, but problem is that she doesn't even know where her cancelled Indian passport and renunciation certificate is? Also she doesn't even remember the Indian passport number. Even to apply for the renunciation certificate the form asks for Indian passport number, what should we do???

Hey, yes she can apply via her husband if he was an Indian and hold a OCI card. You should also reach out to the embassy as generally they should have your aunt history with them as well.

You need to get an oci, which will allow you to stay in India.

My mother is British Protected person passport holder. I applied for her British Citizenship but they want a letter from Indian authorities that she is not and never was a citizen of india nor an oci holder and has never applied for it. I applied for it at high commission of India fro Tanzania but they said they are not allowed to issue such a letter according to citizenship act 1955. What should I do now ? My mum was born in Tanzania and never took Indian citizenship by descent or oci.
You need to ask the British embassy for next steps, seems like a complicated matter to me, only they can provide details.

The only way to travel is to get a visit visa, oci requires around 30 days or more to be processed.

Hey, under oci the only restrictions are that you cant buy a farming land and cannot vote, apart from that everything is same as an Indian citizen.

Since you were an Indian before, you are eligible for an OCI card, if you have lost the passport ask your embassy since they must have records of all cancelled passports.

Yes they will, once a foreign citizenship is taken, Indian passport need to be surrendered asap and cannot be used for travelling.

@@Patel-patel4 the 3 month grace period only applies if you have not recieved your australian passport yet. Once your foreign passport is physically issued, travelling with an Indian passport will attract a penalty.

@@LostinHeaven. The answer is yes and no, you cannot buy property in the cities like Geneva, Zurich etc unless you are a swiss national or hold a C permit. If you are a forgeiner for example holding an Indian passport then just like the others you can purchase property in tourist areas like Gstaad.

This process is a joke.I am at the first step of this process in getting the surrender certificate.I was under the impression it would take a week to 10 days to days to get it.Its been a month and on contacting HCI their response was I have to 'wait" as priority is being given to passports which expire in June of this year.My advice would be have low expectations in this whole process as you are at the mercy of Indian Government employees and there is nothing you can do except "wait" as they say.
Indeed depends upon each embassy and there workload. Small countries with low Indian community tends to be easier and faster.

Inherited or already purchased (before becoming a non-Indian citizen) agricultural land is fine, but you are not allowed to purchase an agricultural or plantation land once you become a foreign national. Also as an OCI holder you would need inland permit to visit some restricted areas in India (like some of the North-Eastern states and some union territories)..
