    I have the lifelong memorable experience at age 13 (1967) of seing Wilson at Hobart College..from the front of the stage. wearing a lavender tuxedo, he was all of this and more...I don't believe his feet touched the ground once!!! 2 guitars, bass, Hammond, Baritone and tenor saxes, trumpets and trombone. He OPENED the show (Paul Butterfield Blues Band had to follow!) Pickett mopped the floor...especially with Land Of A Thousand Dances at the end...each frontline musician dropped to one knee at the BA-BA part until they got to the end of the line when the goateed, greasy-haired b&w Telecaster blaster lead guitarist let loose that sacred twang out front...I swear neither of their feet touched the ground!!!! the lights came up and people were literally STUNNED!
    (BTW BUTTERFIELD WAS GOOD TOO!)

      I mean if you check out the Temptations best lead vocalist, David Ruffin, and even Dennis Evans same/same... I don't think they had to smooth their voices for motown. That being said, this is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. BUT... Come on man, don't diss Motown for southern fried Wilson Pickett. I mean... Otis voice was smooth at times and "cornbread" as you put it when he had too. So...... Just saying.

    To the casual fan, James Brown was everything during this period. To many, however, there were others equally deserving of attention. The music machine was under near total control of what got through to the larger white audience. Mr. Pickett forced his way onto this scene. You could sense why if you ever went to a dance where live bands covered what was new, what worked. God almighty, Wilson Pickett worked. In this cover, he acknowledges Solomon Burke, another giant. Pickett had a sense of what made people get up and dance. An absolute monster, live and on record. 1,2, or3 chord songs created frenzy wherever he played. Killer performances for years. This was not music for 13 year olds. He was driven by his art and by his devotion. What percent of his effort was good enough to satisfy him? 99 1/2 wouldn’t do.

  • @MuppetsFan1
    @MuppetsFan1 10 лет назад +67

    This performance is absolutely electric, and it's just Wicked Wilson Pickett's voice/his band on display. He didn't need elaborate costumes, pyrotechnics, a team of backup dancers, a stage design, crazy antics or anything that Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna, or any other pop performer uses today. Just knock-out talent is all. That's why he'll be remembered forever.

      Cody B come on now. You’re describing James Brown. These other current acts are derived from him. No one today tries to move a live audience like Pickett, Brown or Burke. Or Mimms, or Conley, or Wilson, or Cooke. It’s great to hear this, but nothing even close to being there. Talent, showmanship, talent, they all had it.

      The late Jerry Wexler, who produced Pickett for a time on Atlantic Records, said that one of the things that impressed him about the Wicked One is that when most soul singers scream, they're just screaming unmusically and not on pitch. Wexler called it "over-souling"... he even invented his own term for it. But when Pickett let loose, it was always musical and right in tune.
      The guy was just a dynamo, pure energy on stage and in the studio. Just glad they ran the tape machines, because the music was just busting out of him. It seems like if he couldn't get famous singing, he'd still be doing in some church or some corner somewhere... just had to do it. That's how strong his drive was....

    On this day in 1967 {January 31st} Wilson Pickett performed his covered version of "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" on the ABC-TV week-day afternoon program 'Where The Action Is'...
    At the time his version was in its first week on Billboard's hot Top 100 chart at position #77; a little under five weeks later on March 5th it would peak at #29 {for 1 week}, the following week it fell 20 positions to #49 and that was it seventh and last week on the Top 100...
    Between 1963 and 1973 he had thirty eight Top 100 records; two made the Top 10, "Land of 1,000 Dances" {#6 in 1966} and "Funky Broadway" {#8 in 1967}...
    But on Billboard's R&B Singles chart he fared much better, he had forty eight hits; nineteen made the Top 10 with five reaching #1...
    The 'Wicked' Pickett passed away on January 19th, 2006 at the age of 64...
    May he R.I.P.
