  • 3 benchmarks comparing MacPro at 3GHz against AMD Ryzen 1700, also at 3GHz in Adobe After Effects CC 2017
    1) Warp stabilizer of RED 4.5K Footage (www.red.com/sample-r3d-files)
    2) Ray-tracing Scene (www.teddygage.com/AEBENCHCS6/)
    3) Simple Rings Template rendering (www.freeaetemplates.net/new-free-after-effects-template-for-august/)
    All screen recordings played at 8X speed
    Correction 1: RED footage is 4.5K instead of 6K
    Correction 2: Additional GTX 1080 would not be $400 but ~$530, but it would be a slim benefit in AE

    One thing I did not hear from any reviewer is the fact that how surprisingly AMD managed to come up with a product like this, considering that AMD has a fraction of Intel's R&D budget and how the company is losing out money and is (or I must say was) in a verge of collapsing financially. I can't imaging what AMD could have done if it had the budget and finance equal to what the giant Intel has.. With so much less resources and options they came up with a diamond as a product!

      The biggest breakthroughs in almost all new industries come from tiny companies, usually outside US. Then the big one acquihires it or simply buys patents. I am not saying that AMD did that, but R&D budget is usually incomparably small in those companies. Also, companies do not invent things, individual people do.

      It may be more to do with Intel dragging their feet and resting on their Laurels than anything else. You know the saying: The wolf climbing the hill is hungrier than the wolf on the top the hill.
      Now that AMD has brought out a competitive line-up, Intel have no choice but to scavenge their sacred golden-egg laying xeons with all the subtlety of a butcher's knife in order to appear competitive. They won't be until 2018 for HEDT once Threadripper comes out.

    • @Tech-Guy

      That wolf was on the hill for the last 10 years, and has not moved much. Compare 6700K with their i7 from 2008: cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-920-vs-Intel-Core-i7-6700K multicore performace is hardly doubled for almost 10 years.

    It is not a problem with Mac Pro which is a breeze on FinalCut Pro, for instance, the problem is with AE itself which is not optimized for Mac

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  4 года назад

      AE is different purpose than FCP. FCP is Premere competitor. The AE is not optimized for anything. Recently I tried to also make a video with it on 64Core/128T machine and a one with 8 GPUs, and the results were not exciting at all, so I never finished it.

    • @satori1312

      @@Tech-Guy AE isn't far cry from FCP, on Mac you have Motion for that. And it is as fast as lightning on my Mac Pro late 2013. To me, Motion is even faster than AE and it is also an awesome software. Motion and FCP are very fast. I've been professionally working on PC for almost 30 years and 6 years ago I added Mac. But there is one little thing called CUDA, with it PC can do more and faster. In BM Resolve denoising is at least 3 times faster on my RTX 2080 Ti than on a duet AMD firePro D700

    I'm not surprised at all . . . Apple has been selling overpriced PCs for over 20 years.
    AMD is soon coming out with Whitehaven 16 core CPU - it will definitely be hitting the enthusiast market. . . I bet it still will be cheaper to build a system with that which is cheaper than MacPro and beats the crap out of it. One curiosity that I have is what difference switching to Vega GPU would make. It doesn't have "CUDA" cores but it does have OpenCL and a new architecture with a High Bandwidth Cache controller. . . so all the extra RAM (ex: 64 MB ram) would be used more efficiently.

    I would appreciate your opinion on the following.
    I'm not a gamer. I do video and photography. I actually ordered a Ryzen 1700, which is sitting on my desk since yesterday. My problem is that AMD does not support Thunderbolt in any of the available motherboards, which I need for editing high-bit video externally and it has not announced that it will include it in any of the upcoming motherboards in the near future. Even though I think they have already included it in one external graphics card system, and I also read that Intel will licensee the Thunderbolt technology free. So, with the Ryzen sitting on my desk, I am seriously thinking of returning it to get an i7, maybe the 7800x, which is about $150 more expensive than the Ryzen 1700 for two fewer cores, etc. All because there is no Thunderbolt 3 on the AMD side. Your opinion would be much appreciated.

    Is it just me but, looking at CPU utilization, the CPU's aren't maxing out, meaning that the render is primaraly being done on the GPU side. If this is the case, then this has little to do with a ryzen cpu vs a mac but more so a comparison between a gtx 1080 and 2x firepro D700's. Am i missing something?

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 лет назад

      It does not necessarily mean that. CPU needs to transfer data from RAM and storage drives so that may be the bottleneck. In addition, not all processes can be made multithreaded, especially across so many cores, so there is always a thread waiting for another thread to complete to get data from it.

      Mac pros use server grade material. ryzen isnt server grade and neither is a gtx 1080. They may use it in there other product like the imac. intel xeon and amd fire pro are server grade products used in the mac pro.

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 лет назад +2

      That does not matter much today. I work with server components and they also fail. The big difference is that for the 4 year device cycles, I you can have the same performance with consumer components the first year, and even if something fails on consumer side, you can upgrade each year to better components without reaching the original budget. Having the same budget, 3 years later I have "reliable" old machine that I have to replace, while a smart consumer has 3 times faster machine that is 1 year old, and if it fails, that is only new hundreds of dollars to fix while I need to shell out several thousands.

    • @solatorobo
      @solatorobo 7 лет назад

      i Never said they would fail. everything has to fail eventually but it wont fail as fast as consumer grade products. if not why do people buy server grade material?

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 лет назад +6

      The difference was much bigger several years ago, but today there isn't much. On professional equipment you get support, if something is not working well, while if you buy consumer stuff you will not get your issue resolved even if you say you represent a company and have bought 30 of the same product. Companies have money and man-hours are expensive, and down time is expensive, so better to pay more just to be safe. If I was building computers for hospitals or other "mission critical" businesses I would go with server grade components, but nobody dies or looses money if one of ours computers in entertainment industry, civil engineering, design, video production or other similar industries crashes, component dies and there is 2 hour down time for a single person.

    Threadripper with windows 10 will outright kill macs in creative studios unless Apple adopts it, and fast. They simply can't afford to put intel CPU's to compete with similarly capable Ryzens where the cost is two or even three times as much with intel.
    I can't believe they STILL have no touch screen productivity devices other than their tablets. I work in VFX and rarely use touch except in Photoshop, but even then I will always switch to the surface book for tasks with a pressure sensitive touchscreen stylus, rather than trying to do the same job on the PC with a graphics tablet and pen.
    My surface book i7 is what macbooks should have been, but instead they just keep making gimmicks like the touch bar. It's as if someone else has the rights to make touchscreens, so apple are doing their best to avoid it, which of course is not the case.
    Meanwhile surface pro's are on their 5th gen, surface book 2nd gen, and for those who can afford it the surface studio again destroys mac pro's in creative circles. STILL no touchscreens and styluses on macs, coupled with iOS having aged very badly due to sod all significant updates from Apple for years while Microsoft plows on with specific updates for creators and content makers hard baked into Windows.
    Microsoft and Ryzen are the way to go for sure, there's simply no advantage to macs whatsoever now other than for sentimental reasons. Most big studios now will have an even mix of mac and PC, I suspect the macs are already a endangered species in professional environments.

    You need to change your render preferences in the mac... I am.guessing that ryzen will still perform better.... But not much difference...
    If you look carefully, macpro is using 8 threads not 16, that means its only using physical cores not virtual...
    I think the AE is not optimised on your mac

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 лет назад

      Other 8 threads work but lower, to thread scheduler does not work properly; not sure if the fault is with macos or in AE. But if you look at Windows' cpu graph you will see that it is more even but average utilization is still low at 25%. If you have ideas on what settings to change on mac I will repeat the tests

    • @techgoggles

      I had the same problem on my Macbook pro... AE did not use the CPU or GPU 100% which was bugging me, coz I was wasting time.

      This is a Quad core i7 on AE CS6. Currently my Macbook is in for Repair, I will share more details when it gets back.
      Also I have Placed an Order for a ryzen 1700 with radeon pro>

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 лет назад

      That existed in CS6, but they removed that option in newer versions of AE. You cannot change number of cores and RAM per core anymore. I am also in 3D biz, but I use vray. I made the benchmark videos a month ago but I just forgot to put them side by side... maybe I will do it later this week. VRay also uses all cores at 100%. Maybe it is too late now, but since you are doing 3D, 1800x would be better option, even with less RAM at the same total price point.

  • @someghosts
    @someghosts 7 лет назад

    After effects is so unoptimised. Not saying the results would be any different to a better program, Mac Pro might even get dominated more if you benchmarked using something else, I just don't understand why it's used as a benchmark in the first place. It doesn't even use multiple CPU cores in previewing footage anymore. It rarely maxes out all cores.

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 лет назад

      It is not general CPU benchmark, but a program specific. Some people use AfterEffects daily and would need to know what would save them time when they cannot use anything else.

      Well, if you go by the hardware, and the fact that the engineering costs are no longer as pressing of a concern anymore, it should be less than third...

    I think I have some settings wrong because with a Ryzen 1700x, latest Mobo update, 32Gb RAM, 1080ti, and M2 Samsung Pro and EVO media/scratch drive, after effects is still not as fast as I'd like. It seems to have slowed since I bought the system two months ago. I also don't see in task manager that it is fully utilizing most of the components because nothing is in a high percentage of usage.

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 лет назад +1

      Most AE functions are not well parallelized, so don't expect high CPU usage on any CPU. The latest Adobe update had reportedly increased performance on Ryzen, but I have not had a chance to test it. Slowed down? I could only suspect on M2 issues

    • @josh1674
      @josh1674 7 лет назад

      Tech Guy AE has issues with M2?
      Yeah after further reading I realize that after effects for the last couple years has not been taking advantage of multi thread processors. I think I probably would have been better off getting an i7 7700k. Live and learn. There are so many variables in a system, it is hard to keep track of them all. The i7 plus mobo might not even cost that much.

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 лет назад +1

      I don't thing AE has specific issues with M.2, I think that of all components that one is the most likely to develop issues that would result in slowdown. I got the i7 7700K at work, I will build it in the next days with the same RAM and GTX 1800 as in Ryzen, and redo the tests in AE, PR, PS, to see how much do we gain or loose compared to 1700.

    • @josh1674
      @josh1674 7 лет назад

      Yeah, I'd love to see that. I don't want to have buyers' remorse. Though really, I feel the problem is AE, so I'm looking for an alternative for that, too. I only animate 2D text, so I only use 5% of its features.

      Yes the 1700x. My i7 5820k was able to do it too. It is not too cpu intense. Mine goes between 14%-50% usage switching between the cores. The internet is a large factor. Now editing 8k that is a different story haha

    What is a render farm?

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 лет назад +4

      It is used in creative industry - it is a bunch of computers without monitors, or graphic cards, connected into a network, and used only for rendering. Imagine you have a video with 100 frames, and when you press Render, 10 Render Farm "Nodes" take 10 frames each to individually render, so all 100 frames render in 1/10 of the time it would take for one computer. Pixar and other animation companies have farm with thousands of computers, so instead of rendering one film in 10 years, they finish it in a few weeks.

    As expected PC is much more superior and cheaper in comparison to Apple. am not at all surprised about the results of this benchmark!
    The uniqueness of the Macs is gone since they moved to x86 architecture in 2005 I think. Before that Jobs always said Power PC chips are much better, he even explained in one of his keynotes pipelines difference between Intel, where he basically showed difference between RISC and CISC x86 architecture ruclips.net/video/LA1ZBxVMwBU/видео.html.
    Here is another video they showed 500 Mhz G4 speed vs 1 Ghz Pentium 3 ruclips.net/video/h6ciBW2AfMk/видео.html ;)

    Most of your 4-year-old Mac Pro vs current release Windows machines use Adobe products. Adobe has never optimized their code very well for mac multi gpu machines, especially in their video applications. I have both the 8 core mac and 2 new Alienware machines, An Alienware 17 R4 laptop with the 1070 GTX and a new Alienware Aurora (6700K) with GTX 1080. TRhey blow the mac away with Adobe products, but I don't really use adobe products o the Mac, Like most or at least many Mac users, I use FCP 10.3 and Motion and Compressor from Apple. And when using those programs for my video workflow, the Mac just eats both Alienware computers alive that are stuck running the Adobe crap. Just saying, use the proper tool on the proper machine brings a whole new view of what that machine does.
