I'm old mac user since 1996, l still have macs, but laptops not workstation! My workstation is PC, because it's extremely faster and extremely cheaper! No lags! No bullshit! I'm working in Maya, After Effect, Primiere, Photoshop and Illustrator.
Even windows laptops are catching up when it comes to Mac laptops, and many would argue they've already surpassed macbooks, even the "pro". Macs have their place, sure, if people just want something to work and not have to deal with anything, Macs are fine. Or if they're not going to be using it for anything professional (and at most, will be doing semi-professional work). Or, if you just like their designs and that's all you are about

Not as powerful as large ass workstations, but one that you could carry with you when you're unable to stay in one place with your work. My current (outdated) laptop outperforms the Mac Pro, slightly, at only a fraction of the price. Most successful tech today has its own place. 2 years ago I didn't need anything more than a desktop PC, and I was happy with it. 1 year ago I traveled a lot, while working. My powerful laptop became my new universal tool that took everything I threw at it like a champ. It was the best piece of technology that I could buy at that time, and I'm not sorry for my choice at all. Today however my trips are rarer, and I don't need a powerful laptop on them, so a 13" Macbook would be more suitable, except that I hate OS X, so I'd have to use Ubuntu on it. But at home I don't have a good place for a large desktop PC, so I might just hold on to my laptop. The Macbook isn't bad. The fact that it's relatively light, well-built, and has a huge ass battery, and performs relatively well, is the main reason why professionals in many fields choose it. It would be my machine of choice (only if I can run Linux on it), for half of the work that I do, if I had enough money to piss on it.
A macbook pro (even the new 15 inch with the polaris gpu) would be the very last thing I'd pick for any kind of professional grade work that isn't, like, audio editing or light video editing for youtube or the like. For much cheaper, you can find a comparable Windows laptop that you can easily slap Linux on.
Greyghostvol1 for example? I really want to see a comparable laptop from other brands that have: 1. A good screen 2. Huge battery life 3. Good build quality (so the screen or laptop doesn't bend and break, like the LG gram, or even, in my case, stuff like Clevo laptops - Schenker, Eurocom and others) 4. Light 5. Relatively good overall hardware. 6. A trackpad that could actually replace a mouse. Because believe me, I've been looking. The closest so far seems to be Dell, but even that has build quality issues, and its price approaches that of a Macbook.

When I glance at this sort of comparison between a top end Mac and a PC running full tilt I always see two things: That the PC would generally blow away the Mac at most tasks at less money and, that the Mac users who use such system mostly don't care since they bought it mainly for the software that can't run on a PC and that it would simply cost them not only money but wasted productivity time to switch and cope with the learning curve of the new software. For example, they couldn't care less if Final Cut Pro X renders a certain effect in, let's say 2 minutes whereas a PC using Adobe Premier can render the exact same effect in 1 or 1:30 minutes because they just don't want to start anew and learn how to use AP and waste time which could be better spent on things like earning income.
Thats not true anymore. Apple has abolished most of ther professional software (see final cut pro). So many professionals had to switch to non-apple programms anyway, adobe for example. But they stay on the mac because its a familiar environment. Saying that they don't want to switch because there is a learning curve is true, as long as the learning is a bigger problem than the machine. But if the mac cripples your workflow by taking four times as long or rendering a working scene with low frames, then the learning suddenly may be worth the trouble. After all they don't want to switch because they think they will still be faster. But if that isn't the case anymore, pc becomes an option.
For those of you wondering why he didn't slap some Titan XP's in there for kicks, most rendering software don't use your GPU. Upgrading your graphics card only affects your viewport performance (the interactive part of a 3D application). Also most 3D software recommend using a single card because there are some nasty bugs with SLI so it's almost always wiser to spend all that money into a multi processor setup. Rendering is done almost solely on CPU, never the GPU. Of course there are always exceptions namely: Octane, Redshift, OpenCL acceleration, etc..
well most games dont utilize more than 4 cpu cores and I simply have no clue how a firepro stakes up against a 1080 but I guess it's not meant for gaming. It probably has some ECC stuff or something like that instead.
Ditch the GTX 1080s entirely and add a Tesla coprocessor card to make the Mac scream for mercy. Bonus points if it's the new Pascal one and buries the Mac Pro completely.
Sorry to be the unpopular voice of reason, but where exactly would another GPU fit in when not doing GPU compute? It wouldn't speed up CPU rendering and depending on software used you might only get a viewport speed increase in SLI, so a Tesla is out of the equation... Perhaps the Mercury engine in Premiere could speed up a bit, but that's all I'd bet on. Source: I have 4 GPUs in my machine (2x GTX 1080 + 2x Quadro M5000)

I have been reading on upcoming Radeons being on par with GTX 1080, and roumors of AMDs VR headset with 3x higher resolution than Oculus/Vive, so they are seriously back in the game and will bring back the content creators away from doodling on iPads to serious productivity on desktop.
Instead of the HTC Vive and the Mouse he could have spent the saved 1000 bucks for better CPUs. For 5000 bucks he could have chosen two of the Xeon E5 2697v4 with a core count of 18 cores each. So instead of having 28 cores (56 logical cores) he would have 36 cores (72 logical cores) which would boost rendering performance about 25%.

A quadro would perform almost the same in games. It just has extremely high amounts of memory to render more stuff at the same time, than a gamer gpu. But you can game in a quadro with great performance.

Well obviously if your running on these systems you got to run Crysis at 12k. The pc will probably get at least 60 fps, but the mac being at least 4 times slower will have a max fps of 15. I don't know about you but 15 fps isn't exactly playable.
Some people have no time to solve computer problems. They need system that works, silent, compact. For professionals its worth the price, cause any bug can stop work, for quite a while, or even loss progress in project. For example, my friend writing music, and he switched from server, which required big, separate, soundproof wooden box with ventilation in the room. Mac Pro so quiet that it not requires any soundproof even for sound recording. Its reliable, fast enough, and transportable if he needs to travel and work in another country. Its very hard to do all this in PC factor, if possible at all.
Most 3D renderers are CPU bound. The only thing the GPU will do for you is enhance your viewport performance. There are some hardware based renderers but if you look at the render farms of animation studios like Dreamworks, you'll find that it's all CPUs, the only GPUs are in the computers where the scene and models are being constructed.

That head has 13 million triangles so going higher than 220fps would not make sense. On the other hand 3d mouse makes 3d modeling much easier, and also VR headset is very useful.
*+Tech Guy* Polygon count doesn't really matter with nVidia GPUs anyway, they are well-designed for high numbers of triangles (e.g. in Heaven benchmark between _no tesselation→veeery few polygons_ and _max tesselation→so many polygons it's ridiculous_ the difference in fps is around 5 with a GTX 1080, so it handles it very well).
Welll Tessalation is not the same as polycount. Tessalation creates a dense mesh from a base mesh by dividing it up bruteforce through the GPU. Yet those triangles are not really present, since they are created on runtime. The mesh needs to be setup this way (with tessalation maps and such) and supported by the engine (which i don't think the Maya Viewport does). True Triangle count is the amount of Polygons that the meshes ship with. in so far you can have millions upon millions of tessalated polys and no issues and 5 million polygons worth of assets and you will get single digit FPS.
Matthias Ahlswede As far as I know, that's not entirely true. In the picture that the GPU has to render tessellation does very much represent polycount since the GPU is dividing the polygons into more, little ones; the difference is that the tessellated models exist only temporarily inside the VRAM. However, looking at video games, some games use the principle that, when you activate tessellation, the game uses meshes with a higher polycount that came with the game as well (meaning they were tessellated in advance from the manufacturer). In both cases, the GPU has to render more triangles, and 5 million tessellated polys will have the same performance impact as 5 million true polys (only difference is higher true polycount will probably need more memory bandwith while tessellation needs some of your GPU's compute time. These effects are rather small, though.) Please know that I'm by no means a true expert (only a tessellated one :P ) but I do think I'm a reasonable person. So if you can explain to me just why it should be easier for the GPU to render millions of tessellated polys, I'd be happy to withdraw my complaints.
You can upgrade a 2009 Mac Pro to run quite a bit faster than a 2013 Mac Pro in almost every way for about $1500-$2800 depending what you need. I’ve got a 2009 Mac Pro, upgraded the firmware to 2010 Mac Pro, which allowed me to use Westmere x5690 Xeons (12-Core at 3.46GHz), faster and more RAM, (up to 128GBs), a whole list of AMD and Nvidia GPUs are available and best of all, a ton of m.2 SSDs in the PCIe slots. In my case I have 4 Samsung SM951s in RAID 0 in a 16-slot PCIe bus and it reads at 5.7GB/s. My boot m.2 SSD is in another 4 lane full speed PCIe slot. Got a USC C PCIe card. Four 4TB HDDs in the internal bays. That system cost about $2500. So I built two of them. So I have a 24/48 core solution that works in a distributive environment. And it’s still all Apple to the OS. I can run any OS from Snow Leopard to High Sierra. Worked out good.
I recommend you to use e5 2679v4. although it has fewer cores than 2699v4, it can boost up to 3.2GHz at max load, making it the fastest x86 CPU. The price of this CPU is around 2300 USD.
Do you mean 2697, The 18 core beast? Yes it would. 2695 is a bit cheaper and slower but also has 18 cores, so total of 72 threads in dualcpu configuration. I hope more software vendors will start making software for multicpu systems

Since you do a lot of 3D work, what type of mouse do you use? I'm looking for a mouse with ergonomic shape and a robust middle-click that uses a proper micro-switch.
Few things are a must for me: middle mouse button with wheel, two extra buttons on thumb side, low weight, fitting my hand, cheap, wheel with steps, work without a pad. I only use Logitech m500 (corded) and M510 (wireless), nothing fancy. It fits my hand nicely, it does not make my arm hurt (carpal tunnel syndrome maybe ). M500 starts to look ugly after a year (plastic is ruined from a lot of friction) but they are cheap and I have at least one in reserve. I am OK with having a cord. They do work for many years even in that condition and work on all tables without mouse pad. Both have two additional buttons on the side, and those are a MUST for me. I also love A4 tech laser mice as they were very light, but I can not find them in US. Surely there are better mice. When I lived in Austria I could go to a shop and see 100 mice on shelf, and try them all. But in US they usually have 5-6 cheap ones open, so several years ago I stopped looking for better mouse and stayed with these.
To be honest, you can go with a 256GB flash and buy the RAM outside to invest in some other components (CPU). Still: the fact that the MacPro isn't been upgraded since 2013 makes me mad, they are ridiculous.
Abnormaalz Productions pay attention towards the end, he said if you're using premiere it doesn't use all the cores so it wouldn't matter as much. Macs are great for editing because a a few things but it used to be FCP. Now that FCPX came out it fell behind premiere but FCPX is getting there. I love it's it'll credible render times.
Well... if you have a bunch of cores and RAM to match - you could totally render faster in AE. For now my watercooled 5960X at 4.5GHz on all 8 cores with 64GB DDR4 works well for that.

I have the thermaltake t31, love it. EXTREMELY customizeable, though the downside to that is lengthier installation. I could not tell you much about the other cases though.
Honestly, I think it's going that way for the phones and tablets too, even if we're not there yet. It started with everyone tapping into the tablet market, and suddenly there were a lot of perfectly acceptable android alternatives. For a while, they really settled down and put effort into the iPad because they had to to keep it afloat of everything else. With phones, it's difficult, because the tech and the price are usually similar for all the high-end phones. Apple have been sneaky though by just expecting you to buy $200 in accessories that they have explicitly chosen to leave out of the phone for no reason but to get you to buy something else, and probably another and another when it breaks or gets lost.
Loyal customer doesn't apply. If you're a loyal customer but you're aware that the products are overpriced and underpowered, why would you be a loyal customer anymore? I don't believe anyone really falls into that category. Mostly it's two types. The first is customers, loyal or not, who don't know that they're paying more for less. The second is customers, loyal and aware of rip off or not, who continue to buy the products because they are essentially a fashion statement.

While an OK review with flashy numbers, you have to understand that the reviewer knew exactly what he needs. Most people don't. Most people don't even know how to utilize their machine to its potential. When comparing these 2 platforms, you have to look at UX, availability of software, value over time, backwards compatibility, the trajectory of the companies supporting the platform. I have a $2k rig with 2x32" 4K monitors, but when it comes to programming and productivity, I go to my 2012 13" MacBook Pro (granted it's upgraded to 2x850 pro ssds striped).

So? Like he said he bought some extra stuff just to come close to the budget and still destroyed the mac. What's wrong with having more functionality instead of more power? And still it makes no sense saying it goes unused when you don't own it so how can you know?
A second GTX 1080 would have done nothing with the performance of the PC because all rendering processes in Premiere, After Effects and 3D Programmes are done by the CPU. Only exception are filters that utilize CUDA and of course the realtime preview. Else, all rendering is done without using the GPU.
I know the card wasn't released at the time this video was made, but if I was spending ten grand for a computer, I'd opt for the Titan X Pascal over the 1080. As long as I'm wasting my money, I may as well have the best thing money can buy.

I have a "stupid " question, is it possible to do something like that with AMD ? CPU and graphics cards ? Since AMD might be cheaper CPU, maybe a 4 CPU configuration?
CPU has to support that configuration, so it would be not possible to put 4 CPUs that were meant to be in single CPU systems into a 4cpu Motherboard. For example this CPU can only be in 1 and 2 CPU motherboard. Xeons e5-46xx can be in 4 cpu systems. For a renderfarm for example it would make more sense to get 4 motherboards and 4 AMD cpus to achieve performance of one 4-cpu system (all depending on software, its frequency, etc...)... but often software licensing costs for 4 licenses of everything is higher than getting dual or quad cpu configuration.
maybe you are right. motherboard with more than 2 CPU is for server most of the time. but even a dual 12 AMD core might be interesting and a raid of ssd

Janis Reinberger as far as I know AMD has his own idea of hypertread. it called SMT. I did had an FX8000 with 8 cores and a R9 3xx OC. on the benchmark this configuration has no shame over the I7. but really I am not sure a 12 core can compete vs à 14 core ! but I am almost sure of that, a dual 12 core AMD is cheaper and more powerful than that Mac computer. and if you put a raid SSD for the système... I am not as sharp as I was in building computer but by just looking at the games benchmark, and even if AMD can not handle the fastest memory, it can be a nice competitor
To be fair to AMD, four 16 core opterons in one system did prove to be really good value for money for a while in certain workloads. Better performance could be achieved by pooling more smaller machines but if we are on about single machine options, opteron wasnt and still isnt a bad choice to the best of my knowledge.
My main studio machine is a custom 5960X desktop overclocked to 4.2 Ghz with a gtx1080 and 64 Gb of high-speed LPX DDR4. It eats any MacPro for breakfast, while costing about half. I don't do 3D (well, not usually), this machine is basically used for high-end audio and video editing. You're right, it's not a good idea to go dual-XEON for audio/video. An overclocked 5960X (or the newer 6950X with 10 cores) is definitely your best option.

Carwyn Monck After effects can motion track with a built in tool, but the 3D objects need to be produced through a plugin (element 3D). Premiere cannot.
There is actually a different cooler inside, but also cheap. Good thing about xeon CPUs that it can work with $20 cooler 24/7 at 100% CPU usage and never overheat. In the previous video, 2 years ago, I had liquid cooling, but that was a waste of money, and on 30 machines, I would have to replace one liquid cooling system every month. After switching all to air, I had not issues.
Is that the Super Micro E-ATX case with the included PSU and USB 3.0? Did you go with a Super Micro motherboard as well? How loud is that case in general?
That is the case and SuperMicro x10DAi is the motherboard. I contacted Supermicro to build the whole computer, and I just added the RAID controller and disks as I already had those. Case is pretty quiet, much quieter than the BOXX workstations of the same size I had before

Not as powerful as large ass workstations, but one that you could carry with you when you're unable to stay in one place with your work. My current (outdated) laptop outperforms the Mac Pro, slightly, at only a fraction of the price.
Most successful tech today has its own place. 2 years ago I didn't need anything more than a desktop PC, and I was happy with it. 1 year ago I traveled a lot, while working. My powerful laptop became my new universal tool that took everything I threw at it like a champ. It was the best piece of technology that I could buy at that time, and I'm not sorry for my choice at all. Today however my trips are rarer, and I don't need a powerful laptop on them, so a 13" Macbook would be more suitable, except that I hate OS X, so I'd have to use Ubuntu on it. But at home I don't have a good place for a large desktop PC, so I might just hold on to my laptop.
The Macbook isn't bad. The fact that it's relatively light, well-built, and has a huge ass battery, and performs relatively well, is the main reason why professionals in many fields choose it. It would be my machine of choice (only if I can run Linux on it), for half of the work that I do, if I had enough money to piss on it.
A macbook pro (even the new 15 inch with the polaris gpu) would be the very last thing I'd pick for any kind of professional grade work that isn't, like, audio editing or light video editing for youtube or the like.
For much cheaper, you can find a comparable Windows laptop that you can easily slap Linux on.

I really want to see a comparable laptop from other brands that have:
1. A good screen
2. Huge battery life
3. Good build quality (so the screen or laptop doesn't bend and break, like the LG gram, or even, in my case, stuff like Clevo laptops - Schenker, Eurocom and others)
4. Light
5. Relatively good overall hardware.
6. A trackpad that could actually replace a mouse.
Because believe me, I've been looking. The closest so far seems to be Dell, but even that has build quality issues, and its price approaches that of a Macbook.

I've been saying for years to uninformed Apple fanboys that Mac has become pretty much irrelevant for high-end editing, but too many people still believe the hype that was once true.
If you left out the HTC Vive and the 3D mouse you could have thrown in another 1080 plus an HD SLI bridge and have a killer multi-purpose machine.

When I glance at this sort of comparison between a top end Mac and a PC running full tilt I always see two things: That the PC would generally blow away the Mac at most tasks at less money and, that the Mac users who use such system mostly don't care since they bought it mainly for the software that can't run on a PC and that it would simply cost them not only money but wasted productivity time to switch and cope with the learning curve of the new software. For example, they couldn't care less if Final Cut Pro X renders a certain effect in, let's say 2 minutes whereas a PC using Adobe Premier can render the exact same effect in 1 or 1:30 minutes because they just don't want to start anew and learn how to use AP and waste time which could be better spent on things like earning income.
Thats not true anymore. Apple has abolished most of ther professional software (see final cut pro). So many professionals had to switch to non-apple programms anyway, adobe for example. But they stay on the mac because its a familiar environment. Saying that they don't want to switch because there is a learning curve is true, as long as the learning is a bigger problem than the machine. But if the mac cripples your workflow by taking four times as long or rendering a working scene with low frames, then the learning suddenly may be worth the trouble. After all they don't want to switch because they think they will still be faster. But if that isn't the case anymore, pc becomes an option.

For those of you wondering why he didn't slap some Titan XP's in there for kicks, most rendering software don't use your GPU. Upgrading your graphics card only affects your viewport performance (the interactive part of a 3D application). Also most 3D software recommend using a single card because there are some nasty bugs with SLI so it's almost always wiser to spend all that money into a multi processor setup. Rendering is done almost solely on CPU, never the GPU. Of course there are always exceptions namely: Octane, Redshift, OpenCL acceleration, etc..

Sorry to be the unpopular voice of reason, but where exactly would another GPU fit in when not doing GPU compute? It wouldn't speed up CPU rendering and depending on software used you might only get a viewport speed increase in SLI, so a Tesla is out of the equation... Perhaps the Mercury engine in Premiere could speed up a bit, but that's all I'd bet on.

Instead of the HTC Vive and the Mouse he could have spent the saved 1000 bucks for better CPUs.
For 5000 bucks he could have chosen two of the Xeon E5 2697v4 with a core count of 18 cores each.
So instead of having 28 cores (56 logical cores) he would have 36 cores (72 logical cores) which would boost rendering performance about 25%.

Some people have no time to solve computer problems. They need system that works, silent, compact. For professionals its worth the price, cause any bug can stop work, for quite a while, or even loss progress in project.
For example, my friend writing music, and he switched from server, which required big, separate, soundproof wooden box with ventilation in the room. Mac Pro so quiet that it not requires any soundproof even for sound recording. Its reliable, fast enough, and transportable if he needs to travel and work in another country.
Its very hard to do all this in PC factor, if possible at all.

There are some hardware based renderers but if you look at the render farms of animation studios like Dreamworks, you'll find that it's all CPUs, the only GPUs are in the computers where the scene and models are being constructed.

That head has 13 million triangles so going higher than 220fps would not make sense. On the other hand 3d mouse makes 3d modeling much easier, and also VR headset is very useful.
*+Tech Guy* Polygon count doesn't really matter with nVidia GPUs anyway, they are well-designed for high numbers of triangles (e.g. in Heaven benchmark between _no tesselation→veeery few polygons_ and _max tesselation→so many polygons it's ridiculous_ the difference in fps is around 5 with a GTX 1080, so it handles it very well).
Welll Tessalation is not the same as polycount. Tessalation creates a dense mesh from a base mesh by dividing it up bruteforce through the GPU. Yet those triangles are not really present, since they are created on runtime. The mesh needs to be setup this way (with tessalation maps and such) and supported by the engine (which i don't think the Maya Viewport does). True Triangle count is the amount of Polygons that the meshes ship with. in so far you can have millions upon millions of tessalated polys and no issues and 5 million polygons worth of assets and you will get single digit FPS.
Matthias Ahlswede As far as I know, that's not entirely true. In the picture that the GPU has to render tessellation does very much represent polycount since the GPU is dividing the polygons into more, little ones; the difference is that the tessellated models exist only temporarily inside the VRAM.
However, looking at video games, some games use the principle that, when you activate tessellation, the game uses meshes with a higher polycount that came with the game as well (meaning they were tessellated in advance from the manufacturer).
In both cases, the GPU has to render more triangles, and 5 million tessellated polys will have the same performance impact as 5 million true polys (only difference is higher true polycount will probably need more memory bandwith while tessellation needs some of your GPU's compute time. These effects are rather small, though.)
Please know that I'm by no means a true expert (only a tessellated one :P ) but I do think I'm a reasonable person. So if you can explain to me just why it should be easier for the GPU to render millions of tessellated polys, I'd be happy to withdraw my complaints.

You can upgrade a 2009 Mac Pro to run quite a bit faster than a 2013 Mac Pro in almost every way for about $1500-$2800 depending what you need. I’ve got a 2009 Mac Pro, upgraded the firmware to 2010 Mac Pro, which allowed me to use Westmere x5690 Xeons (12-Core at 3.46GHz), faster and more RAM, (up to 128GBs), a whole list of AMD and Nvidia GPUs are available and best of all, a ton of m.2 SSDs in the PCIe slots. In my case I have 4 Samsung SM951s in RAID 0 in a 16-slot PCIe bus and it reads at 5.7GB/s. My boot m.2 SSD is in another 4 lane full speed PCIe slot. Got a USC C PCIe card. Four 4TB HDDs in the internal bays. That system cost about $2500. So I built two of them. So I have a 24/48 core solution that works in a distributive environment. And it’s still all Apple to the OS. I can run any OS from Snow Leopard to High Sierra. Worked out good.
I recommend you to use e5 2679v4. although it has fewer cores than 2699v4, it can boost up to 3.2GHz at max load, making it the fastest x86 CPU. The price of this CPU is around 2300 USD.

Since you do a lot of 3D work, what type of mouse do you use? I'm looking for a mouse with ergonomic shape and a robust middle-click that uses a proper micro-switch.
Few things are a must for me: middle mouse button with wheel, two extra buttons on thumb side, low weight, fitting my hand, cheap, wheel with steps, work without a pad. I only use Logitech m500 (corded) and M510 (wireless), nothing fancy. It fits my hand nicely, it does not make my arm hurt (carpal tunnel syndrome maybe ). M500 starts to look ugly after a year (plastic is ruined from a lot of friction) but they are cheap and I have at least one in reserve. I am OK with having a cord. They do work for many years even in that condition and work on all tables without mouse pad. Both have two additional buttons on the side, and those are a MUST for me. I also love A4 tech laser mice as they were very light, but I can not find them in US. Surely there are better mice. When I lived in Austria I could go to a shop and see 100 mice on shelf, and try them all. But in US they usually have 5-6 cheap ones open, so several years ago I stopped looking for better mouse and stayed with these.
To be honest, you can go with a 256GB flash and buy the RAM outside to invest in some other components (CPU). Still: the fact that the MacPro isn't been upgraded since 2013 makes me mad, they are ridiculous.
It really goes to show where they are focusing their market. OS X is more or less dead at the moment.

Abnormaalz Productions pay attention towards the end, he said if you're using premiere it doesn't use all the cores so it wouldn't matter as much. Macs are great for editing because a a few things but it used to be FCP. Now that FCPX came out it fell behind premiere but FCPX is getting there. I love it's it'll credible render times.

Well... if you have a bunch of cores and RAM to match - you could totally render faster in AE. For now my watercooled 5960X at 4.5GHz on all 8 cores with 64GB DDR4 works well for that.

Honestly, I think it's going that way for the phones and tablets too, even if we're not there yet. It started with everyone tapping into the tablet market, and suddenly there were a lot of perfectly acceptable android alternatives. For a while, they really settled down and put effort into the iPad because they had to to keep it afloat of everything else. With phones, it's difficult, because the tech and the price are usually similar for all the high-end phones. Apple have been sneaky though by just expecting you to buy $200 in accessories that they have explicitly chosen to leave out of the phone for no reason but to get you to buy something else, and probably another and another when it breaks or gets lost.
Loyal customer doesn't apply. If you're a loyal customer but you're aware that the products are overpriced and underpowered, why would you be a loyal customer anymore? I don't believe anyone really falls into that category. Mostly it's two types. The first is customers, loyal or not, who don't know that they're paying more for less. The second is customers, loyal and aware of rip off or not, who continue to buy the products because they are essentially a fashion statement.

I have a $2k rig with 2x32" 4K monitors, but when it comes to programming and productivity, I go to my 2012 13" MacBook Pro (granted it's upgraded to 2x850 pro ssds striped).

A second GTX 1080 would have done nothing with the performance of the PC because all rendering processes in Premiere, After Effects and 3D Programmes are done by the CPU. Only exception are filters that utilize CUDA and of course the realtime preview. Else, all rendering is done without using the GPU.
Well maybe you could fit in a second 1080 for the price difference instead of buying HTC holo bs that would bring nothing in productivity aspect

I know the card wasn't released at the time this video was made, but if I was spending ten grand for a computer, I'd opt for the Titan X Pascal over the 1080. As long as I'm wasting my money, I may as well have the best thing money can buy.

CPU has to support that configuration, so it would be not possible to put 4 CPUs that were meant to be in single CPU systems into a 4cpu Motherboard. For example this CPU can only be in 1 and 2 CPU motherboard. Xeons e5-46xx can be in 4 cpu systems. For a renderfarm for example it would make more sense to get 4 motherboards and 4 AMD cpus to achieve performance of one 4-cpu system (all depending on software, its frequency, etc...)... but often software licensing costs for 4 licenses of everything is higher than getting dual or quad cpu configuration.

I did had an FX8000 with 8 cores and a R9 3xx OC. on the benchmark this configuration has no shame over the I7.

To be fair to AMD, four 16 core opterons in one system did prove to be really good value for money for a while in certain workloads. Better performance could be achieved by pooling more smaller machines but if we are on about single machine options, opteron wasnt and still isnt a bad choice to the best of my knowledge.

My main studio machine is a custom 5960X desktop overclocked to 4.2 Ghz with a gtx1080 and 64 Gb of high-speed LPX DDR4. It eats any MacPro for breakfast, while costing about half. I don't do 3D (well, not usually), this machine is basically used for high-end audio and video editing. You're right, it's not a good idea to go dual-XEON for audio/video. An overclocked 5960X (or the newer 6950X with 10 cores) is definitely your best option.

Carwyn Monck After effects can motion track with a built in tool, but the 3D objects need to be produced through a plugin (element 3D). Premiere cannot.
Why do you buy a $30 212 Evo cooler for a $2,000 CPU?
There is actually a different cooler inside, but also cheap. Good thing about xeon CPUs that it can work with $20 cooler 24/7 at 100% CPU usage and never overheat. In the previous video, 2 years ago, I had liquid cooling, but that was a waste of money, and on 30 machines, I would have to replace one liquid cooling system every month. After switching all to air, I had not issues.

That is the case and SuperMicro x10DAi is the motherboard. I contacted Supermicro to build the whole computer, and I just added the RAID controller and disks as I already had those. Case is pretty quiet, much quieter than the BOXX workstations of the same size I had before
