I'm the little girl in the trolley at the end. My dad was the manager of the supermarket and they borrowed me 🤣 I remember trying to act by picking up a packet of scourers! One of my earliest memories.
very cool!!
Wow!
The years slip by. I was only a young boy back in the 80s. I did trolleys 🛒 in Dunnes Stores Limerick Ireland back in the late 90s. Mothers with their babies would pay 1 pound for use of a baby trolley. The winters were freezing 🥶 cold.It was an outside trolley shed. Burger land is there now where the shed was. Managers could be tough and customers would hardly know you were there. There were some friendly customers that would talk to you.😊Managers would laugh when I use to run into reception to get change thinking I was trying to chat up the girl working there. I now work for a landscaper for the last 20 years.😊😅
Nice memory for you.
Nice story and nice memories
She was all of 23 when she made this. What an absolutely astounding talent. And speaking of astounding talents, the song was actually written by Kirsty MacColl (who was the same age as Tracey) three years earlier at the age of 20. RIP, Kirsty.😧
Brilliant song, Kirsty MacColl was very talented. This should be a Christmas song, it's painstakingly nostalgic
The Babbbbbby in the middle is Kirstys voice as Tracey couldn't hit the high note!
i think kirsty was sixteen when she composed this.
I don't listen to much Pop at all, but I liked this because I liked her and her TV show.
Thanks for the info about Tracey.
Another interesting fact... This uses the exact same backing track as Kirsty MacColl's original version. It's basically a karaoke. 😊
Love this sweet song..and the appearance by Paul McCartney!

Indeed! I just love her!!
Why didnt she carry on singing what a lovely voice.

Absolute perfection. The boyfriend in the video kills it. Amazing song and amazing old school video. And of course Paul's cameo is gold.
I couldn’t believe it was him until they zoomed in and I screamed it real is Paul McCartney!!
I don't understand why Paul was plopped in there.
@@jonhohensee3258 Well at the time they we're shooting a horrible movie together called "Give My Regards to Broadstreet"
@@cookiemanlives - So what? He looks nothing like the other guy in the video playing her boyfriend. And he has a different personality too. It's almost like Paul is thinking "Look at me! I'm Paul McCartney! Aren't you thrilled?".
@@jonhohensee3258 .. that was because Tracy had a big name in England and was and is still good friends with Paul, that's why.
Tracey Ullman never fails to put a smile on my dial! She is so cute in this. A complete one off talent!
Tracey Ullman has more talent in her baby finger than most entertainers have in their whole body. She can sing, dance, act, write and perform fantastic comedy. I love her voice, too !
She's also cute! :)
The Simpsons were first introduced as a cartoon on the Tracy Ullman Show.
She kills me as Angela of Germany :)
She is so super talented
Agreed!
Agreed, she can do it ALL! Didn't even know this existed, what a great cover and yes, her voice is superb. Didn't see the McCartney ending coming-ha ha! So cool! Maybe she can Drive My Car...
Married my late wife that year in 84. This song brings back memories of her. Love her for all time
sorry to hear about your loss
Treasure the memories Mike, it DOES get easier.
God bless you.
I missread that, I thought it said "maimed"
I buried my first love who I've met in the 80s. Amongst the least favorite things that I have done.
I simply adore this, I used to watch her TV program just so I could hear this song at the end of every show. The production is amazing, and way ahead of its time, and it is a real earworm.
Complete entertainer on every level. Drama, comedy, singing, writing, hilarious personality. Stable, gifted, consistent...

Love the Paul McCartney cameo at the end.
Tracy had appeared in Paul's "Give My Regards To Broad Street" and he was returning the favor.
That was him throughout the video

This song sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it! I think it has a lot to do with the beautiful chord changes throughout the song. Pure perfection!!
Absolutely, and the way the melody moves along them.
The harmonies at the end are musical gold.
Shirley here, I could listen to this song all day. The video was cute perfect for the words.
The chord changes, the pitch perfect harmony. And that MacColl high note. Close to a perfect song.
@frakte Beach Boys, Bee Gees and CSN level harmony.

Can we talk about what a supremely talented person Tracey Ullman is? She can sing, dance, act AND she’s FUNNY.
How many people do you come across like that?
And don't forget, she gave The Simpsons its start!

@@rklegrand YES!!!!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Ullman's vocal overly mixed down here. I can barely find it under all the "effects."
She's cute too!
Her facial expressions are so great in this video. Every time I see her start dancing in the grocery store I can’t help but smile.
It's powerful, almost 40 years later.
The song is about such a pure love, that's why the dancing at the end is so beautiful.
Heard this song on SiriusXM today, man what memories it brought back. Many have already said it, but the 80’s were the best of times! Nobody staring at their phones, no texting. Our eyes did all the talking! Love u Tracy!!
Got reminded of this tonight watching a reproduction of Friday Night Videos from the 80's. I hadn't heard this song in forever but don't you know I sang right along with it word for word? This era is immortal. Love Tracey Ullman.

Kirsty MacColl wrote this, may she rest in peace. What a lost treasure. .
I absolutely love Kirsty MacColl. One of my favorite songs is the duet she did with Shane McGowan "Fairytale Of New York". From The Pogue's album 'If I Should Fall From Grace With God''. I can't believe it will be 20 years in December that Kirsty's been gone.💖🙏👼
Didn't know that. I remember my drama teacher when it came out saying she knew the person that wrote the song and it was her!
@@Latbirget Here is the original version. ruclips.net/video/4vQkf_sC0PI/видео.html
@@Latbirget That is SO cool!😃👍
Kirsty is doing the backing vocals with Tracey
The is pure pop gold. The harmonic richness of kirsty MacColl's song, reminiscent of the Phil Spector girl group genre, evoking youthful romantic exitement. Tracey's powerful but also slightly ironic vocal delivery - and in this video great comic acting. The richness of the backing vocals. The high "Baby!..." (they got Kirsty MacColl herself in to sing that because Tracey couldn't hit the note). I love melody and this is one of the best. I find it blissfully overwhelming.
Beautiful synopsis btw. Couldn't agree more. This song does something to me everytime I hear it. No other version captured the magic of this
@@MrBlick76 ❤
Spot on review!
The harmony in the backing vocals is superb, as is the the who;le of the song/video. i've repeated viewing for years!
She's astonishing. I don't know how many awards she's won but it should be doubled.
Kirsty MacColl wrote such beautifully-crafted songs about young love; I believe she was only seventeen when she wrote They Don't Know. The musicianship here is absolutely first rate, the vocal harmonies are sheer perfection (it's lovely to hear Kirsty's voice so prominent amongst the backing vocals). I could listen to this song all day long, but it's SO perfect that it makes me cry every time I play it - makes me wish I was that young all over again - when everything was fresh and exciting. THAT is the true power of a really great song/songwriter. Rest in peace, beautiful lady.
Totally agree. I prefer Kirsty's original version of this song and the 'baby' here is actually sang by her as Tracey could not reach that high note. 'They Don't Know' is just one of many great songs that Kirsty wrote or covered. Gone far too soon.
TONGA9691 TONGA incredible x
Kirsty also sings the prominent "Baby" because it was too high pitched for Tracy
it makes me cry every time I play it , lol not me i've just been cutting onions.
Clearly, Tracey adored Kirsty, as she also recorded "You Caught Me Out", "You Broke My Heart In 17 Places", and "Terry".
Omg...this is one of the happy songs that's been forgotten through the decades. Makes me feel like a teenager again....long live the 80's
Love the ending with Paul McCartney....however love the dude who plays her husband...iconic video

Jasmine Anaya, she sings BOBBY'S GIRL really well too.
This such a unique single and video to see in '84. Tracy's 60's look was something that nobody else was doing in the early 80s. Dancing with the shopping cart was beautiful.
Agreed. It's also cool the song itself has a 60s flavor.
I'm pretty sure Mary Wilson also had a 60s vibe to her look in the early 80s with a beehive etc

Matt Groening had quite a bit to do as well! Love Tracey!!!!
The expression that she gives in the supermarket when her beau gooses her is priceless.

A fantastic ballad and video from a successful and sublime artist 💖💖❤️💋
This is a love song in its purest form. Sweet without being sappy, glorious without being gushy. Tracey sings the tune with enough of a melodic power to give the lyric a lot of feeling while not being melodramatic or over-the-top about it. Besides; the music does that all on its own. By the way...the arrangement sounds like something Jim Steinman or Phil Spector would have pulled...all lush strings, lots of percussion, piano/synthesizers, throbbing bass lines and some admittedly powerful guitar. Music needs more songs like this. Where is simplicity when it's most needed?
well said, my sentiments too
It's great hearing that there are others out there who appreciate that over-produced music. Have you listened to George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" album? It's a great example.
Yes, I love the arrangement. It sounds 80s synthesized at times but the bass and strings give it some authenticity. I love it.
great arrangement, key changes etc
and tubular bells and I think the producers may admit to a little "wow-and-flutter" to give it that extra vinyl record appeal
