It was cold in January 1985 in North West England where I was and the video matched the weather. The documentary about the making of Fairy Tale Of New York pays tribute to Kirsty MacColl. Deeply moving and a special mention for her mother who comes across as so dignified.

I'll be sitting on that lonely bench in Soho square waiting for ya girl.
This was one of the songs I ran to the radio for in the 1980's......a fresh breath of air in the (What I then considered , my taste has become milder since the last twenty years) polluted smoke of synthpop. I can still get a kick out of this song and am just jamming along with my newly acquired electric 12 string. Still get goosebumps. Don't know why, the lyrics don't apply to me but it is the overall atmosphere of youth and exciting music that speaks to me still, How sadly Kirsty may have met her end, in her musical inheritance and in her vids she at least doesn't age.Very thankful for the fact I can still enjoy it with modern technology.
She had such talent. So sad that her life ended so tragically. Saving her Son, and dying in doing so. She had so much more to give us. You are surely missed.
I was a pirate radio d.j. when this came out in 85. I played it far more than I was supposed to. Just popped unbidden into my mind today...every bit as good as I remember.

Same. So hard to listen to.
Once Again I still cry everytime I hear it
Times flies, I've always loved this song and all of a sudden it was over 35 years ago. My two daughters are now older than I was when this came out.
"I saw two shooting stars last night, I wished on them but they were only satellites, it's wrong to wish on space hardware." These lyrics are gold.
Exactly 15 years since she died. Time flies. Taken far too young RIP
Today is exactly 15 years since she died. December 18th 2000
RIP Kirsty 16 years ago today x
She died a hero saving her son. Fair play to her ❤
out when I was born. 1st February 1985. Still really love it. Was such a shock when she died and I remember feeling sick for days. Can't believe how quick time goes and it's 16 years now! RIP
'I put you on a pedestal, you put me on the Pill' - such a memorable line by Billy!
Is that in his version? As it sound like one of the female-fronted lines Kirsty would have added.
Evokes growing up in some blighted town where ideals have been let go of and hope of betterment stripped away by the economic desolation of the 80s,far from the affluent places, and just about the only thing left to aspire to is teenage pregnancy (and with it the chance of a council house).
@@krashd He wrote I put you on a pedestal, they put you on the pill. His lyrics are basically th same as hers barring a couple of bits, ie. I'm looking for another girl versus Are you looking for another girl. Great piece of song writing but I prefer her singing it.
holly mina I think Billy is great, but he has got a voice like a foghorn! 😂 the way Kirsty sings this takes to a new level
Hi Peter this line was as modified by Kirsty Macoll , changing the gender in the song so she could record it. Great song, great work by both of them
Would’ve been sixty today.
Damn...
she has a very unique singing voice, I really like it
Oh my god - this just sent shivers down my spine and put a tear in my eye - i havnt heard this since back in the day when i was 15 and it was a favorite of mine - such a great song and tune - what an amazing woman
still listening july 2020.. RIP Kirsty
It's a great song, like many of Kirsty's
Good Croydon girl still listening too she was always well respected on Roundshaw Estate.
Same thing in 2022. RIP Kirsty MacColl.
I miss kirsty's singing , thank God we've got RUclips and Vevo etc so we can see and listen to her again .
Godspeed Kirsty 🙏 🙏
It was cold in January 1985 in North West England where I was and the video matched the weather. The documentary about the making of Fairy Tale Of New York pays tribute to Kirsty MacColl. Deeply moving and a special mention for her mother who comes across as so dignified.
Great loss to Britain and our music. RIP Kirsty
She is Italian/Hungarian American, USA
@@007floppyboywhere did you get that idea? I mean we all came from Africa originally, but she was born in Britain, to British parents. Same as her father, who was also a great loss, to traditional folk music 🤷♂️
To this day im still LIVID that Kirsty was taken from us and NO ONE ever served proper time inside! Born in Croydon where I lived, the same month and year as me I’m still here sadly Kirsty isnt! Every Christmas when they play ‘Fairytale of New York’ I remember Kirsty. I wonder what you would be writing now K? Sadly missed 😪 I just realised that is Croydon power station in her video, being demolished! My heart broke when we lost you K. I'll be sitting on that lonely bench in Soho square waiting for ya girl.
A Croydon girl through and through , great singer kirsty mc Coll
I woke at 4am up singing this...... Not heard it for years
one of my all time favourite songs so saddened when Kirsty died
A billy brag song
a great singer and songwriter who gave her life protecting her kids rip heaven has a brave talented angel 😇
I was a pirate radio d.j. when this came out in 85. I played it far more than I was supposed to. Just popped unbidden into my mind today...every bit as good as I remember.
I was 21 years when I heard this song and I loved it then as I love it now. A tragic loss, Kirsty sang to a generation……poetry with humour and a brilliant melody…..I cried when I heard she had died.
The beautiful, effervescent, Kirsty MacColl. She is missed, and taken too soon. Although her music lives on, there is a void, of which no-one has taken her place.
Kirsty McColl always sounds great no matter what she sings. RIP.
Still makes me smile this song. Clever, clever lyrics
What a great song, and such a beautiful soul, sad of her passing, a friend turned me on to Billy Bragg yrs. back and I dug him, stumbled upon this gem and will listen again! R.I.P Kristy and fly high angel.

One of my favourite songs. What a beautiful voice Kirsty had.
Beautiful song.
billy bragg made her famous, and then she made him famous.
Beautiful Kirsty with a beautiful voice.
I was so lucky to see her live many times.
Miss you sweetheart.
This brings back many memories, just as good as her dad
'I don't feel bad about letting you go, i just feel sad about letting you know' ...those lyrics have been my friend for years........thanks for your music Kirsty.......
You can thank Billy Bragg then seein has he wrote it.
+jack watkins ahh...a fellow pedant.......i was just trumpeting Kirsty's version.......
+Alan Springett Yes but Kirsty wrote a new verse for the song.
+fozzerbluenose No she didn't she modified some of the lines from the verses but she didn't write a new whole verse. It was Billy Bragg that wrote the new verse for her because she found the song too short. :/
What does it matter anyway just enjoy a wonderful piece of music from a very talented lady.
Kirsty MacColl what a beautiful woman 🏴 rip love x
We all miss you Kirsty :(
Loved her since the first day I served her at the chippie I used to work in
I think Kirsty left a huge legacy, anyone agree?
I sure do. She left us too soon 😢 ✝️
I didnt know she had a Subaru.
Billie joe armstrong got me here. ❤️
"I put you an a pedestal, you put me on the pill"_ genius. She left us far too soon 😰
