I understand that this is an old video. I'm sorry but this is not a "professional" repair. It's a "good enough" repair. In the same amount of time you could have re-pinned the wire into the new connector, or just re-pinned the old connector. No splicing, less materials used, Etc.... Not saying it doesn't work this way. It'll probably hold up for the life of the car. For anyone reading this those small details of not splicing and having a clean, factory look go a LONG way, and take your quality of work to the next level.
I totally agree...I would call this a good DIY repair but not professional level.
I would have just replaced the plastic metripack connector plus connector. That way you don’t have to splice in a new wire
Some added tips from a trained wiring technician:
1. Clean the flux off the solder with some Isopropyl Alcohol so the acid in the flux doesn't eat the solder and copper wire.
2. Flatten out any sharp edges or wires that stick out. If you don't they will over time wear through the Heat Shrink. In this case it's unlikely it would cause any harm other than let moisture into the solder joint and wires.
3. Use Environmental Splices when available or put some dielectric grease or acid free RTV around the solder joint before you shrink the tubing to keep moisture out of the solder joint and wires.
Nice job. If you have some added skills you can remove the pin from the connector and reshape the pin if it's still good and reinstall it with some dielectric grease and skip the connector splicing all together. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya
Good tips, thanks. Familiar with soldering, but not automotive
Why keep the unused wire instead of removing the unused pin?
Just wondering why you didn't de-pin that unused wire from the connector?
My thought is that maybe if he removed the terminal from the connector the cavity would have got exposed to water, dirt or any other external agent . Perhaps the old connector had that cavity blocked only allowing 1 wire to be connected, therefore there would not be any water or dirt intrusion. Connectors come with different configurations sometimes.
I would have de-pinned it as well. There should be a rubber seal attached to the wire to avoid water or dirt coming in. That seal can even be replaced if needed.
I like how he taped it back up before checking to see if it works, lol.
Some problems here ‘11 Honda Civic
👍
I`m not an expert, but this is not an "proffesional fix". I would just changed the connector and not rip appart the other wiring. Wery strange approach.
Ghetto repair. That was a very standard Hella superseal, probably costs $2. Fixing it like a pro would be fitting a new connector, which is faster than what you did. My problem wasnt the cable splice but fitting a used connector will certainly make it fail again.
I need to know how to actually connect just to the auto pin connector. Wire to connector direct. Can't find a vid anywhere everyone has an already connected wire to their auto pin connector
Better to depin the old and repin the new connector housing and not cut you original wires.
Use electronic cleaner on wires and use a heat shrink sealed crimp connector, The solder will fail .
‘Like a pro’ uses the most crappy electrical tool ever made on planet Earth.
Besides that, it looks good.
Rough work. De-pin and replace with no splice. Tools used are poor quality that the cutting and stripping tool if found would have you removed from projects I work.
check out the big brain on alex
Just remove the wire in connector that is not being used, then it would be like a pro
Nice video! What do you call the tool with the arms which held the wires while you soldered them together?
RJ BeastMode they are called "helping hands"
Not a joke either that's actually what they are called
Where can i buy socket and connector for harness Toyota land cruiser ?
bit of overkill with the shrink tubes dont ya think?
Mate what about the other side of connectors that would plug into those female connectors, there’s a picture of one on the description but you don’t do one, your doing the one side that everybody else does, what about a demo on how to change the male side pins
Can I connect the wire directly without connector
its a fail. crimp not solder
So just another video on how To splice a couple of wires. Cause no one else on you tube has done this.
great job man!
Nice if you can get the replacement connector.
You forgot to clean off the flux from the soldering. To prevent c corrosion
Thanks for the video. I was taught that you should always crimp and not solder in an engine bay? Is there a reason you soldered and not crimped? Thanks.
that's a fact jack!
So true due to the engine bay heat causing the solder to become weak(which is how it is deisgned to operate its a low temp melting). also this guy used way to much solder, you just wanna tin it basically and still see the wires he piled it on :/ .
???? Solder melts at 350 deg f
@@drivewasher plus he's got 2 layers of heat shrink
Unfortunately I damaged my plastic connector (very brittle ) at seal belt pre-tensioner on my 2005 Hyundai Elantra. I might be able to just get a new connector and join the wires? But I need to get the connector completely out too. The car is 11 years old and never had seat belt removed.
"Highly suggest" putting the tubing on first. Yeah, a few times have I soldered the wire only to realize I forgot to slip the shrink tubing on first. That sure caused some colorful words to come out of my mouth!
Does anyone have any idea where to buy blank plug sets.. male and female pairs.
Looking for a Kia Rio 2013 instrument cluster pair to make a patch cable to retrofit another cluster..
Any ideas..?
cuz i am having the same problem
hi, can i please get the part number of that connector, cuz i did not get it form the agent down here
My car needs this guy ;/
Man, you make it look sooooo easy. Ha. Thank you,
