whole Snaefellsnes peninsula was a highlight of my short trip due to lack of tourist busses. Just a handfull of other tourists, and more pristine not caged out nature. It was spectacular

It is so pretty there! When I was a kid, there were nesting birds on the way to school that always dive bombed me. All I see in my mind is a guy on a bicycle with a really mad bird on his head! 😂

Your videos are one of the main reasons I made sure to take a trip off Route 1 to visit Snaefellsness and Hellissandur was the first place I camped on my trip around the ring road, it will always hold a special place in my heart. Thanks so much for your content. I’m watching in Palm Springs, California, quite possibly the literal exact opposite of Iceland
just got back from Iceland this night after 3.5day trip. Snaefellsness peninsulas was definitely my favourite day trip even if i had to rush it due to lack of time

Great video, we drove by Hellissandur and Rif in June. We did not stop there, but we stopped in Olavsvik where we had locally catched Cod for dinner, very good fish I must say. Definitively fresh 🙂

Great video, love your beautifully put together info video. I am a bit surprised you've not mentioned the 2 waterfalls just before Rif from Olavsvik. We came across them in 2019 but we did miss the road to the church 😮. Please keep up with the content, they bring myself joy and information from such a wonderful beautiful country. What an amazing history, so fascinated by Icelandic cultural tales (and angry or not, I like these fearless terns --- imagine their incredible travels from the Antarctic, wow!)
I went to Hellissandur last year after going to the Westfjords. Stayed in a waterfront apt. I don't remember Rif, just Olafvik and Hellissandur. Our guide stayed with me and my son and his friend stayed in another place.

You know once the search and rescue folks seeing I was disabled gave me a ride right up to the eruption. Very kind.
When we went out of Reykjavik it was a lot less crowded the further up North we went. Everyone we met were friendly as could be and even offered to have us come for supper.

You call them village or town (dorp in Dutch). We would call them hamlets (gehucht).
Totally different type of houses; more like Norway.
We have terns (stern) too and also black ones.
i visited iceland last month. and got attacked by these birds too. not knowing anything about them. i met them at the port to heimaey. so they scared me and all the tourists away :D
Yes and there are some nasty Icelanders who love to see the tourists go running form them birds, not me of course 😂

I have a question about linguistics: the spelling of Hel often shown as Hell...Do you know why Hellissandur is spelled with two 'L's' instead of one 'L'? (I know different languages have spellings based on word composition and usage in the sentence....just wondering if that is the case here...??)
Long wave radio broadcast is pretty much history. Only few of these still operate in Europe. Germany, Austria and Switzerland do not longer operate it.
The other LW mast in East Iceland was destroyed a while ago and this one will be a goner within 2 years, but the plan is to make the FM network better first.
From the former Haseatic League there were only three cities left, Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck. The first two managed to keep independent and have as mere cities with only little land around equal rights as the much larger German Bundesländer. If you want to, you can percieve the Hanseatic League as one of the precursor organisations to the European Union of today. The idea was pretty similar as it was intended to set the same standards in all participating cities and areas and us the power of many to create something that had no King or Emperor, and allowed trade to grow and mutual benefit over the borders of many territories and political entities. During the last one or two decades it has become popular among all of the former participants (cities) to remember the common history and reconnect ties and honour the legacy. It was very successful at its time and slowly went down, as global trade with the colonies started on a much larger scale with larger ships etc.
Yes iv'e heard this EU predecessor mentioned before, very logical. The Hanseatic League more and less owned the complete Reykjanes Peninsula for a while, incl. Hafnarfjörður and went into warfare agains the English in Grindavík but it's gonna be more about the in my upcoming episodes :) and thanks for your input :)
@@JustIcelandic I was not aware that it extended to Iceland. Iceland is only mentioned once in the German Wikipedia article about the Hanse. It seems that the "Stockfisch" from Iceland was somehow transported to Bergen in Norway. In Bergen was a Kontor that collected it from the larger area and transported it to London and Hamburg in exchange for other goods like salt or cloth. A Kontor is a large warehouse near the harbour, it also traded goods locally, but it had no political purpose. It seems that they had some kind of monopoly on the trade of stockfisch, which was a very important resource in the south as a staple food with long shelf life. The Brits just left out the man in the middle and bought it directly from Iceland, which was the end of this business model. But I am definitely not an expert in this subject.

I'd buy the story of the oldest church built with concrete, since Iceland was leading the pioneering with this materials at the time.

The Danes did carry out surprise attacks up the Thames that caught the English off guard, so it was not just a one way street.
I am old enough to remember the Cod War as they called it here, and as a kid I felt the British behaved like bullies, and at the same time the Icelanders have been proved right. I still l think they have the best tasting Cod, I buy it frozen from a big chain store called Iceland, frozen and individually packed it taste a lot fresher than the Cod from the supermarkets which is mostly at least a week old/dead.
I have visited Rif in May, the terns were not aggressive at that time
