The Complete Story of Reykjavik Part 1 - The Seltjarnarnes District

  • This is a direct continuation of my series about all towns and villages in Iceland but the greater Reykjavík area gets at least 8 episodes since it consists of 6 municipalities and 8 towns in total. Each city district (town) has its own characteristics towards history, appearance, politics and more so it's plenty to cover.
I will therefore use this series to describe not only the capital and its surroundings, but also Icelandic customs and culture, good and bad and leave nothing behind, like i have done in my other work about smaller towns around the country.

That was very interesting. Like so many people, I subscribed to several Icelandic RUclips channels for the volcanoes but I'm enjoying learning more about the island and the people. I'm from Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Our metropolitan area is 5.5 million people. In the US we have counties as well as cities, so that includes six counties that each have more than half a dozen towns like Seltjarnarnes. But we have the same kinds of political things going on.

Hitting quarter of a million in the capital area. And Icelanders are not exactly used too large crowds except on some few occasions, and the traffic is increasing. So for some of them from small towns or villages in the country side Reykjavik seems unbearable 😃

One observation From my travels around the world is that the inhabitants of the capital of many countries feel, rightly or wrongly, that they get worse services than those in neighbouring towns & cities.
Also I love it when a small town just point blank refuses to join up wit its land grabbing neighbour for whatever reason they choose 🙂

Thank you for this informative video. Visited for 5 days in 2022 April and it was one of the most brilliant holidays of my entire life. I still think about it daily. Instead of visiting clever places such as the Penis Museum and flirting with the beautiful Icelandic girls, I should have spent more time studying the actual landscape and history of Reykjavík.

Recalled visiting the lighthouse back in 1979. It seemed to be the most exposed to the weather site in the capital; 300+ degrees of wind off the bay.

Wow - about a month ago, Reykjavik Grapevine did a newscast here. (Episode #211). Valur walked across the rocks as the tide was rising. :D So very nice to see all the drone footage and get more of the sense of the place. If I lived there, I would not want the "big city" setting up all over the beauty, either. We humans keep increasing our numbers, then kind of overrunning the lifestyle we seek.
