$10,000 Pyramid (VT-11/15/73) (Pat Carroll-Tony Randall)

- A rare episode of the original CBS $10,000 Pyramid from 1973! This episode I would note comes from a screening on an old video podcast (NICKINATL; thank you Vahan for the refresher as I had forgotten) where it was shown in the corner while occasionally there were background comments from the podcast host. I managed to crop the video so we see just the program itself (but for a tiny sliver in the bottom right). The extraneous comments are from the original podcast.

At long last! An classic Pyramid episode that was *not* taped at CBS Television City in the Hollywood District of L.A., but at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City’s Theater District. And it’s great to hear the late Bob Clayton’s voice and not Jack Clark’s.
I believe Bob Clayton would also go on to announce another NYC based game, "Pass The Buck".
CBS was so stupid in canceling this show when the ratings took a temporary dip because of preemptions for Watergate hearings coverage. When ABC picked it up, the show just didn’t have the same feel to it. The set was changed somewhat, the sound effects were a bit different and it just wasn’t as good as the CBS production.
CBS had union rules in which they didn't allow a rival network to use their sets. That's why a newer and smaller set was built. The first six weeks of the ABC run continued to tape at The Ed Sullivan Theater, and then they moved to Elysee.
When ABC picked the show up, they changed some rules, including NOT using your hands in the WC.
@@chapter7thomas and that has been the rule in the WC ever since.
Of course, they got it back about 8 years later
Was it replaced with Match Game?
Wow! A great find!! It’s interesting to see how Dick’s command of the pacing of the show was still developing and not as perfectly smooth as on ABC. I just went to see Stephen Colbert two months ago and all I kept trying to visualize was the Pyramid on that stage, which was difficult to do since I’m sure the place looks nothing like it did in 1973 😂
I graduated HS in 1973. And loved this game show
Flashback !!!! Grandma watched this every single day , along with her other favorites .
Wow another lost Pyramid! Hope more episodes come to light
Yeah...like the very first episode...
Gotta love Bob Clayton s energetic announcing.
After hosting "Concentration".
Bob Clayton also hosted "Concentration" on NBC, after Hugh Downs left, if memory serves me.
What a treat. Thanks for sharing
I always forget Pyramid started on CBS, before moving to ABC, and then returning to CBS again in the 80s. And funny enough, now it's back on ABC again!
When this show aired, I had just started first grade. The reason why I didn't like Pyramid at the time was pretty simple. I couldn't read yet and play along!
Do you have a vhs tape ?, the full broadcast of New Year's Rockin Eve on ABC please ?📼
It's always amazing that so called "destroyed" shows mysteriously pops up here. The contestant with Pat Carroll is definitely a New Yorker. You can tell by her accent.
CBS was always one of the better networks at not erasing their shows. ABC didn't stop the practice until the late 70s and NBC the early 80s.
Wonderful to see Tony and Pat so into the game. But I’ve never seen her get snippy with a player.
Amazing quality for something that was recorded over half a century ago.
Dick Clark didn't run off stage at the end as he came to do. Wonder what year he started that and why?
Even when he started that, he didn't do it every episode. I remember many 80s episodes where he either didn't leave, or he left and came back to chat with the contestants/celebs.
I don't know why he did it, but I think a rumor I once read was he did it because of all the different shows he was hosting/producing at the time. He had to hustle to another studio to do another show.
Pat Carroll auditioned as Ursula in The Little Mermaid in 1989. RIP Pat Carroll.
I got to meet Pat Carroll at Game Show Congress in 2005. She was so friendly. It was like talking to a friend you haven't seen in a long and are so happy to be with again.
Great Quality indeed !
"But remember, Gladys, there's no s***room in the Bookmobile."
This aired 5 days before I was born
I already know the celebrities from the flashback clips:
Bill Cullen (from Three on a Match & To Tell the Truth)
Rob Reiner (from All in the Family)
Peggy Cass (also from To Tell the Truth)
Jack Klugman (The Odd Couple)
Lucie Arnaz (Here's Lucy)
Pleasant rediscovery, Eric! Always fascinating to see an episode of The $10,000 Pyramid be rediscovered. Out of curiosity, do you know the name of the podcast itself?
It's slipped my memory because after I did the crop job I didn't keep the original file. I think "ATL" (his name wasn't on it, just some acronym or user handle) is part of the user name that's all I remember.
@@epaddon It's NickintheATL.
@@VahanNisanian I appreciate that information, even though based on his comment in the GS forum, he is choosing to throw a fit about it, sadly.
@@epaddondo you have any more 10000 pyramid episodes that were taped in New York
If VTRs were available back then,I would have recorded these shows.
Me too...mot definately
@@chapter7thomas Like my own little videotape library.
The horns would have been rams
Taped on my Mom's 17th birthday!! Sorry, Ma; didn't mean to spill da beanz lol.
So much orange!
Thank you for this. Wasnt there an episode unearthed from December 20, 1974? Is it on RUclips?
This is the episode you're thinking of. It's airdate was December 21, 1973. A year later the show was on ABC and no shows early than March 1976 from that run have ever surfaced.
Do you have more 10000 pyramid shows from 1973
There exists a kinescope of the Christmas Eve 1974 episode, but it has never reached the masses yet, unfortunately.
@@samturner64 kinescope?
@Jack-zd7rv Yes, in black and white. Someone recorded it off TV way back then and has held it since. Said recording even contains the original commercials.
Penny Marshall is in the commercial at 10:20.
The association of aspirin with Reye Syndrome in children wasn't known (or at least well known) before the 1980s, so it was very common to have commercials for children's aspirin prior to the 1980s. Looking back, it might be a little odd for some to see a children's aspirin commercial.
He said MATERIAL for COTTON THINGS...in later years the judge would not accept that.
Do I understand it correctly that NickInTheATL podcasted another early Pyramid episode? If yes, is it viewable on either RUclips or their podcast channel?
Not that I'm aware of. I haven't gone through his earlier podcasts if they're still available.
So is that NickInTheATL yapping over and effectively ruining this otherwise pristine rarity?
@@buddhabull727 Yes, but the remarks are fortunately minimal. I should add this was presented originally on his video podcast with the image in the corner of the screen and wasn't being presented for a broader upload. It's only because I captured the video podcast that I was able to crop the image. So in fairness to him, this wasn't being presented with an eye toward wider distribution at the time.
@@epaddon What a shame, bit like scribbling on the margins of a lost Picasso. Hopefully an unadulterated copy will surface soon. A delightful watch all the same, thank you very much for sharing!
I have to ask where did this one come from?
It was originally show on a video podcast by "NickintheATL". On that, the video was shown only in the corner of the screen. I cropped the video so that the full-screen image was restored.
@epaddon Awesome! I've always said there are more $10,000 Pyramid episodes out there than what is thought to exist
I only know Pyramid variants from the 80’s and beyond on my own. But seeing this first CBS version compared to ABC, CBS is a far, far better production, plus picture quality is much better. And original colors here were brought back when Pyramid returned to CBS in 1982
I’m surprised they let him get away with material as a clue for cotton things. It’s a descriptive clue. Guaranteed in the $25,000 Pyramid version, they would have disqualified that clue.
They were still feeling their way around things.
I hear King Kong is lovely this time of year... 🤭
1:08 *NOICE!!!* 😎😎😎
Gil Gerard... Buck Rogers in an early commercial.
0:39, where was Bill looking at the clock?
Ursula the sea witch
Describe villains with a great ass, ready, go!
Excellent effort, Eric.
All i will say is they were very easy going in the winners circle. In the 80's don't use your hands, only a list, no synonyms. Much easier to win but harder subjects
Tell me that you have more episodes of The $10,000 Pyramid: CBS Version. Please...
I'm afraid not.
@@epaddon Aw, shucks! Rats! Well, thanks for trying.
The contestant said MATERIAL...for Cotton Things...in later shows saing MATERIAL would get you buzzed.
Dick Clark was a good host
He had the perfect balance of keeping the game moving, while knowing when to crack jokes or get serious.
Just because it was a tie the show goes into panic mode
Reason being that the tiebreakers then ran like baseball’s extra innings. Very often they couldn’t squeeze two winner’s circle rounds because of that. The tiebreaker rule was changed in the 80s.
This isn't the one where Dick Clark falls into the floor over the Tony Randall joke?
No that happened two years later during the ABC run which is mostly gone for the 1973-78 period.
Didn't Tony Randall put Dick Clark on his backside with a big-time joke?
Yes! He said a cuss word on-air. I bet the clip is here somewhere!
Pity the poor unfortunate soul that plays Pyramid against Pat Carroll!
Billy did good. 😀👍
Tony Randall could've said "it's a slot machine game with Jack Barry". Pat Carroll's partner could've said "it's the war where MASH takes place".
Was Pat ever on Body Language? Cause you know, never forget the importance of...
Every incarnation of the Pyramid sucked without having Dick Clark as the host.
Pat Carroll needs to take some xanax before playing. And why does she stare off into space when receiving clues?
Thinking of mermaids she can swindle? Thinking about Grandpa since Garfield isn't there to remember him with her?
