When I go play at my brother's church, he does something similar. Too bad I couldn't see it because the drums are behind the organ (C2).
He should get some Walker's active hearing protection. It lets you set the limiter and input volume separately. I use them for shooting, but they have such good quality that you could use them for band, too.
