I believe this is basically about drugs. I think "the bear" refers to drugs. (Either you got the bear or the bear got you) This is, as I understand it, a "demo" and is not a finished product. To me.. it has an unfished "hollow" sound to it. There were a ton of "problems" in the time period of the Gaucho recording... including the death by overdose of Walter Beckers girlfriend. An engineer accidentally erased one of the main tracks as well. They went back in the studio but could not seem to "get it right" so it never made the album. Great reaction, guys. Take care.

Very cool you guys are willing to do Steely Dan outtakes, ie songs that didn't make the Gaucho album! I was very lucky to hear this tune played live at the one off NYC Rarities Concert at the Beacon in 2011. The first time they ever played it live! They also played another outtake from Gaucho, Second Arrangement, which I like even better! Hope you can do that one too.
Its too bad these weren't included on the Gaucho album in 1980. I won't bore you with the story of how their recording tapes got screwed up, but if you Google it you can find out. The crazy thing is had this been released a few years later when cds were being released, they could have fit both The Bear and Second Arrangement on the Gaucho album, since cds could fit 80 min of music instead of just 45.
If you want to see live footage of them playing these 2 songs live at that Rarities Concert, its been posted on RUclips in pretty good sound and decent visuals (not pro shot). Thx again, and hopefully react to Second Arrangement (you could react to that live video)!

Owsley Stanley used the professional name Bear. Kid Charlemagne is about him. He was the king of lsd in the Bay area of SF during the hippy days. "On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene, but yours was kitchen clean. Everyone stopped to stare at your technicolor motorhome." The hippy bus was a 1939 International Harvester School bus painted technicolor and driven around by Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters 1964 giving out free lsd. Probably from the Bear's lab.

I love this tune. Funky, dark, and Fagen at his menacing best. I always wonder, if they committed to this track for Gaucho, whether they'd continue to polish it for the final cut - a searing guitar solo from Carlton or Khan, and a horn arrangement.

Plenty of other tracks that might have made Gaucho including Kind Spirit, Talkin’ Bout My Home, Kulee Baba, and The Second Arrangement.
Some of the tracks appear in different forms. For The Second Arrangement, I suggest you go with the full band version. It is lower rez but closer to what the band was intending before abandoning the song. Others here will tell you The Second Arrangement is the one that got away. I’d argue it could have been the lead single off Gaucho.

Great reaction to this brilliant song - "How the hell did this not make it onto the album?" Drugs. And personal tragedy...Fagen & Becker were both in a bad place during the Gaucho sessions and it was especially hard for Becker. Their drive for perfection was exasperated by drugs and it affected their decision making. The musicians were quite puzzled at the takes that never made it lol

It was mostly due to the tapes from the recording sessions being damaged or erased. Plus, Gaucho was right before cds would allow you to fit 80 min on an album. Had this been 5 years later, probably both tunes make the album (if they could have recreated the songs without the tapes).

Even unpolished, incomplete studio demos from Steely Dan’s vault sound better than finished recordings from lesser artists, IMHO. Some of the outtakes from the Gaucho sessions were actually songs that may have been written but not recorded for previous albums. To me, “The Bear” sounds more like it would have fit with The Royal Scam, for example. “The Second Arrangement” was indeed the biggest “lost track” tragedy to come from these sessions. There are numerous bootleg versions of the track to be found online, so you might need to read the descriptions before listening to find the most complete version available.

@@Cpayne30 no doubt -as a fan I’m glad we have them. But no overdubs (!not even percussion or bvox), what I suspect is a scratch vocal (have we *ever* heard them use an echo like that on a lead?), the possibility of changed lyrics etc etc not to mention not mixed or mastered (and personally I can see what they might have thought this one didn’t structurally go with other Gaucho tunes). I love the song and the personnel is top tier as usual but, to me, it sounds like something is missing, as if there’s not enough layers of sound or nuances to the flow.
