Black dude whose been a Dan Fan since the 70’s, don’t know how I came across your podcast but I really enjoy your introspective outlook on music. I think the first time I saw y’all you were listening to another favorite ZZ Top’s Jesus just left Chicago. 👍🏽

Spot on BJ. Musicality defines Steely Dan. The session musicians they use are the best of the best. "Any Major Dude with a half a heart will tell you my friend."

Every steely Dan song sounds so different, they’re so versatile yet at the same time you know it’s a steely Dan song when you hear it. Just the best, so amazing.

Pure talent not a bad song on any of their albums. This is my favorite song off this album. Great thing about SD is they have songs that fit into any of your moods. This is what talent sounds like

one of the magical things about Steely Dan is the complexity of the keyboard chord progressions. another magical part is that the whole mixture of instrumentation is complex and yet blends so seamlessly. glad you are enjoying one of the most talented duos (along with their studio specialists)...the mindset of the composers is pretty danged impressive

I had a friend like that when I was growing up, in my teen years. They really kept me from falling into despair by giving me some hard earned wisdom. Although I haven't seen them in decades, I stil treasure their friendship.

"You can try to run, but you can't hide from what's inside of you."
Some say this song was a wrap on Lenon.
Steely lyrics will meet you wherever you are!

I always took it as more philosophical, what is often seen as problems in life will pass. Any "major dude" a great person of wisdom will tell you. Others can tell you what you should do and give their opinion, but you still have to figure it out and deal with yourself. It's what any major dude would tell you.

Don & Walter would have some great musicians in the studio and after some time tours . the drummer for the song Aja was Steve Gadd a jazz drummer from here in Rochester NY.. The arts have always been a part of the community. Now with an International Jazz festival each year

It's the audio production as well as the unbelievable quality of each musician that participated with this group and they switched out always just bring in top talent as it was appropriate for each song. The Aja album In particular was so highly produced at the time that any high-end audio file store that was trying to sell top and equipment speakers and such would always use the Aja album to show off their capabilities. At the time I think they spent a million dollars on the production of that album which was unheard of at the time but it absolutely is a gem every single song

I felt some sadness when both said they really didn't think there was some "major dude" in their lives that would be there to hold them up in times of trouble. There are some really amazing people out there, all you need to do is open yourself up and these people will come into your life. I have met some very awesome people sitting right next to me at the bar. Not to say that the bar is where these people hang out. But, they are all around. Open the door and communicate, speak from your heart with people and you will be amazed. There are some deep souls floating around - just open your world.

I used to think that music this dry and tight was just not passionate. But then I got older and passion comes in different forms for different people. Sometimes passion is an awkward, sensitive person being a debauched cynic to cover it, and finding himself in that public bravado. The art of desperate but brainy cool, is Steely Dan’s passion.

A "squonk" is a mythical creature from the swamp that shuns civilization but cries itself into a puddle when discovered because of how hideous it believes itself to look.
This song shows the relationship that mental illness can play in the mind of an intellectual person who believes their pathway in life was superior, until they get checked (by the demon at the door) only to realize that they are doing poorly and broken up by uncontrolled events. (Minor world that breaks up)
The encouraging point of view of the streetwise singer is one of, been there, done that brother, so just hold on, because (any major dude) like Jesus, Abraham, Moses, etc. who had even half a heart for the people around them, would tell you that whenever it's the darkest, just hold on until the morning and believe in the good thats inside of you!
