This might be my favorite track on the whole album. A Pop gem, what great chord changes, beautiful melody, arrangement, one of Donald Fagen's all time greatest lead vocals, his phrasing, hip/cool delivery, lyrics about facing once's inner demons. That bridge w/ the lines: "I can tell you all I know, the where to go, the what to do/You can try to run but you can't hide from what's inside of you' is brilliant.

Donald Fagen said the song is about a friend who was having serious mental problems.
When this album came out in '74 Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young had just passed their prime. The music and vocals have that CSN&Y vibe.

Squonk is a mythical creature that cries itself to death, leaving only a pool of tears. The band Genesis wrote a song about this, "Squonk" which is a very good song worth your while to check out. To me as a scared child afraid to fall asleep when I heard this in my teens it meant a lot, when the demon is at your door, in the morning it won't be there no more. But I've read it's a drug reference so who knows. And yes nice call on the switch to an acoustic feel.

I love the concept of "major dudes." I feel like we've lost this; the idea that there are people throughout history who just can't be ignored. And when it turns out one of those people said something relevant to your situation, it's just stupid not to listen.

Donald Fagen's degree in Romantic Literature served them very well.. As you dive deeper into the "Dan" Canon, and hopefully, Fagen's solo efforts, I think you'll both agree that his lyricism is quite profound.... Nobody writes songs like these anymore...

This is a great album. I hope at some point you react to the newer SD albums "Two Against Nature" (2000) and "Everything Must Go" (2003). You should react to those after you do all the albums from the 70s. That way you can better understand the musical progression.

Imo, it's not hard at all, to get the meaning of the lyrics. There's nothing ironic or artsy to read into it. I prefer these sorts of words, because they just come out and say things, and say them with a positive upshot.
It's about breaking down and being scared, sleepless, depressed, worried sick, and panicked. It's about being told where to go, what to do for help, and facing down your monsters, and finding them gone before too long has passed.
When we cave in like this, it's a minor world that goes down. But because it's that way, things get better sooner than later, if only you don't try to run. This song has found me in just that very place in life.
Maybe it's SD's most positive song, and the prettiest, most laid back. This is the stuff that makes Steely Dan one of my hero bands.
    Sorry for the long comment.

I get the sense that the basic structure of this song was probably created during the “Can’t Buy a Thrill” sessions, but then they didn’t finish it until it was added on to “Pretzel Logic“.
Very similar vibe and instrumentation to their first album’s work.
Pretzel Logic is my least favorite album of their work from the 1970s, but this song is one of the few shining moments on that record.

It's hard to tell just by listening, but since a lot of their song have more than a tinge of cynicism; this song just poked fun at the "dude" and "easygoing" culture of the west coast. Almost like condescendingly calling someone "buddy" today.

  • @CaryOn11

Thanks for doing this whole album! Nice job you two. It has been my long held belief that this song is all about temporary drug (cocaine) induced psychosis (paranoia) As JJ Cale wrote in his Cocaine song"she don't lie" Too much cocaine for too long (especially when injected or smoked) might just unleash all the hidden fears that reside in deepest darkest recesses of the mind. Many people have experienced going on "window patrol" for hours convinced "they" are out there combined with the uncanny ability to hear everything within a 5 mile radius! Dopamine flooding the brain. Sage advice in this song tomorrow it won;t be there no more especially if you stop using, come down and sleep.
