These guys are in their mid 70s, and so I give them a ton of credit for still having really good vocals at their age. The voice is the first to go, but they sound damn good considering their age.

Boz Scaggs is my favorite artist. I saw these guys in Boston a few years ago. It was an amazing show. Loved it and had an absolutely fantastic time.
Saw The Dukes about 10yrs ago in Toronto. I'll never forget it.
One could say, listening to Steely Dan is like taking a Master Class... and paying attention. I think you are! Enjoying music is one thing, appreciating it is another. This is some deep s***.
Saw them live twice in this era and both shows were absolutely amazing. MM was in one show. They added one more background singer in the other. Donald Fagen is a work horse. I predict they tour again in the near future. Be sure and go see them because it might be your last opportunity. They pick super cool venues too.
The guitarist other than Boz is Jon Herington who has been with Steely Dan since 2000 on tour as well as in studio. Also check VH1 Storytellers video from 2000. Really good live with Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, Jon Herington, a variety of additional musicians and some hot backup singers.
The every A frame had your # , the gas in the car, technicolor motorhome , still an outlaw in their eyes so many memorable lines
It has been so much fun watching you guys and your genuine enthusiasm for exploring good music has me checking my notification daily for more uploads.

Hey You Guys! I love how you are discovering and appreciating Steely Dan. That music was all coming out in my high school years and pretty much formed my expectations of what good music should sound like. I've never stopped listening to them for over 40 years! I also love how you are so into the production side of things. That whole "Making of Aja" video is worth going through song by song. You'll even hear Donald Fagan do his "Uptown baby, uptown baby!" when they are talking about Black Cow! The Dukes of September project was a great way to feature Fagan, MacDonald and Skaggs all playing on and appreciating each others' songs. Their live version of "Pretzel Logic" is to die for! Especially, Michael MacDonald's verse.
There are a couple other great RUclips videos talking giving background into Steely Dan and their music. You might really like listening and reacting to them. One more thing, I remember when they finally released the album "Two Against Nature" after a 20 year hiatus. I was so nervous that it just wouldn't live up to the perfection of their previous albums. But, they came back without skipping a beat and won another Grammy for the song "Cousin Dupree." And Donald Fagan's 3 solo albums are also perfection, especilly "The Nightfly," in my opinion. So, there's no end of music for you guys to delve into.
It's fun to watch you hearing it for the first time. It's like taking a friend sight seeing, you notice new things as you watch someone else discover it for the first time. Even though I've heard these songs thousands of times, I hear new things listening through your ears. So, keep it up!
There are certain bands I never get tired of listening to or get burned out on, and Steely Dan is one of them since I first heard Reelin and Do it Again in the early 70s on the radio, and by 75 I had all the albums to that point. Aja came out my senior year in HS and I played it to death in college.
When I saw Fagen, Becker, McDonald and Scaggs at the 92 Rock and Soul Revue show, I couldn't believe I was hearing SD songs live. And then the 93 tour, went with a big group of old HS buddies who were all SD fans. Then I became spoiled for the next almost 30 years!......
So glad you have gotten to see them live on this video, tho'!
I glad that you checked out The Dukes of September and that you enjoyed this version...35 years after Kid C was originally recorded and the song sounds amazing. The Dukes toured for about 2 years (circa 2010-2012) so many great songs to check out as they performed each other's hits during these shows. Fantastic!

Can you believe Donald at one time did not want tour because they were not sure how things would sound live. Sounds pretty darn great to me!
That was because back in the early 70s when the original band toured, the sound systems at arenas and old halls were still pretty lousy, and he's a perfectionist. Their studio sound as it grew to incorporate more brass etc was way ahead of their live sound. That's why they stopped live touring after 1974. They couldn't duplicate that sound like he wanted back then with musicians beyond the 5 of them.

This concert was Top Shelf. All of “the usual suspects” were on fire that night. Checkout the whole show. Takes me back to when contemporary music was worth the time.

One thing you guys should know about SD is that their albums were amazing partly because they spent so much time in the studio they didn't tour much. Good luck finding tons of stuff from them live from the 70s.
Steely Dan didn't play live back in the 70s they were just a studio band.

Since Steely Dan started touring a lot in the early 2000s, I have seen them twenty or so times. Go get the videos of the live performances. The band will blow you away every time, every time.

These same three guys, Donald, Michael, Boz together with Phoebe Snow performed together as the New York Rock and Soul Review for a live show at the Beacon Theater in NY. That was a great show with everyone’s music being performed as well as other music. It should be on YT. Great job guys.
They did a whole Tour 2 years in a row, not just 1 show. Saw them in the Lou.

Enjoying your discovery process. Falling in love with Steely Dan all over again. Have you researched the name of the band yet? :) Don't forget Pretzel Logic, and then take a dive into the Night Fly - Donald Fagan less Walter Becker. That album should be in every music lover's catalogue.
It's very similar to how The Allman Brothers truly and completely mastered the art of playing dual synchronized lead guitars, which is a very distinctive sound. Check this out to see what I mean, (at some point, anyway), which is a request i promise enriches BOTH of us! There are surely better audios, (and definitely better video, cause this camera guy must have been on crack, lol) of this out there but I chose this one because it has both, my man, Derek Trucks, who is easily in my top two favorite guitarists on the planet PLUS the incredible Mr. Warren Haynes, who BTW is playing with the Dave Matthews Band in the Central Park concert i have asked you guys to do, but it IS a long song, so if you don't do it, I get it but I promise it's worth every minute! The way they did the Isley’s “Who’s that Lady” to start the show!!! Epic just stumbled on to you guys and I’m From OC. It’s funny I’m 53 and have 3 older brothers who all Lowrided but music was huge and this always reminds me of my childhood. I go on deep Steely Dan trips, I drive a truck and I always hear something different lol didn’t notice. So hard to choose but even though Deacon Blues is my favorite I thin Royal Scam barely noses out Aja

Steely Dan after touring very little when they first started the band then stopped touring completely and did not play live until their comeback in the early 1990’s.
So good. Just saw Steely Dan in June in Houston. Always great live. You should also check out DF’s solo work. I think you would like.

I saw a Dukes show in person.
The minute I heard they were doing this 3 headed monster with a full backing band (most of which were the Steely Dan band), I was in and made sure I got a good close seat. Fantastic show. I thought I had never seen Boz Scaggs live, but later I remembered that I had seen Skaggs at the 1992 New York Rock and Soul Revue Tour, which not only led to the live rebirth of Steely Dan in 1993, but was really the precursor to the Dukes of September, since McDonald also was on the Soul Revue! It was very cool to see Boz again and hear his tunes done live after about 25 yesrs!
I have seen SD over 20 times, and saw Fagen and the Nightflyers Band twice, have seen the Doobie Brothers several times, including the tour Steely Dan and the Doobies did w McDonald, so already had seen them play together. Amazing how well all the music sounded, just a great tight jazzy funky rock show. I have the Blu Ray too, a great souvenir of the show.
Oh, and Micheal McDonald is from my hometown, ol St Lou! (Home of Chuck Berry, the REAL KING 🤴 OF ROCK AND ROLL!)
Jon Herrington on lead guitar for these sessions. I recall seeing an early version of the touring band back in the 90s featuring Drew Zingg on guitar. Some great solos for these songs, notably the best solo on Pretzel Logic, bar none. Drew also toured with Boz Scaggs around that time, always ripping Lend Me a Dime to shreds. Worthwhile to check Drew out.

The 3 Dukes intended (and advertised) their shows to be an homage to some great blues, R&B, and soul classics of their youth. But they “got in trouble” ‘cause audiences still expected/wanted to hear the hits of the three. So the set list changed a little to include a few more of those. BUT IMHO there are *much* better live performances of all three playing their own shows with their own full stage bands, giving a truer picture of their individual strengths (and most with a less-stilted vibe than this made-for-DVD performance). I’m sure this community can point you to good clips for each
I feel music just like you guys. You should also see Stieve Ray Vaughn doing Superstition and Voodoo child. The man was in the stratosphere of blues rock!!!!
I'd suggest going back to some of Michael McDonald's earlier stuff, he's got an extensive collection to explore, in case you're interested. This is a live performance "The Doobie Brothers - China Grove (From Rockin' Down The Highway: The Wildlife Concert)" Michael McDonald has so much soul in his voice, and it's very distinctive, very recognizable... just like Boz Scaggs's voice is quite unique as well. I tend to gravitate towards blues and jazz, whether it be traditional or southern rock. Thanks for the memory's fellas, Thanks for sharing🎶🎷🎸
Bepop players like Charlie Parker, Art Tatum and Thelonious Monk had allot to do with this .. I played in a funk &groove class at Shoreline CC here in Seattle with a special needs dude that learned this entire song on keyboard after one listen .. blew me away ofc he had like 3 dif boards he’d use also sings like Fagen kinda looks like him too wore shades cuz he was blind like Ray and Stevie we’d help him walk in n outta class. What a guy wish I could remember his name I’ll track it down
The lead guitarist is Jon Herington, who's been touring with Steely Dan since 2000. He's a flat out assassin. Seen SD 19 times since they started touring again in 1993, most recently at Woodstock NY in July '22. Dukes were great, but the 13 member Steely Dan touring band is as good as it gets.
Saw him play with Steely Dan back to back nights in NYC in the fall of 2019. Was so good

I second another comment about checking them out LIVE while in their prime. Donald isn't near peak here with his singing. I know you're going down by LP's, but there are some quality performances out there you'd really enjoy. PLEASE check "Babylon Sisters" (Goucho LP) LIVE at Sony Music Center 2000. You'll see some of the studio guys they used

Steely Dan did very few live performance's in their early days, they preferred staying in the studio for creation with different highly creative studio musicians, i was born in 57 and grew up listening to the greatest music ever created, thanks for the memory's and reactions.

Well, I guess it depends on what other bands you're talking about, and what you consider a lot, but according to a source I found called the Steely Dan Database, between Oct 1972 to July 1974, Steely Dan played at least 171 concerts. I don't know how accurate the site is, but it looks pretty detailed. Basically nonstop typical touring for the end of 72, most of 73 and the first half of 74. I would guess the first concerts in 72 may be incomplete when they weren't yet known, so its likely more.
But in any event, 171 in that relatively small time frame is quite a lot. Sure, maybe not Grateful Dead numbers, but that's a pretty busy schedule over roughly close to almost 2 years.
So long as you're up for some ironic white bands, Bruce Hornsby has about 4 sheets of acid and a 10th as many RUclips live shows for you to peruse.

Prime steely Dan live is around 1994-1996. This was around 2011 I believe. This group also did a version of Peg I’m pretty sure.
