Are You Checking *Here* for Case Head Separation?

  • Most reloaders will eventually learn about case head separation, whether incipient or actual, sometimes the hard way. Afterwards they'll hopefully inspect their cases after each firing to avoid it in the future. The Redneck Preppy says, however, that many reloaders are only looking in one place and are ignoring another, and less visible, area.

Great advice. I have never had a case head separation in my reloading, I have been very lucky. Will have to look into this with some of my higher use brass

You never forget your first time :-)
Ironically, I filmed this a few weeks ago and a few days ago I was at the range shooting my Gew. 71/84 chambered in 11mm Mauser. Wouldn't you know it, I got to experience case head failure during a shoot and enjoyed a face full of gas and whatever else came out the back of the bolt.
Needless to say I'm checking these cases very carefully, ha ha.

I wonder if this applies to 9mm FMJ, Got a new box of new 9mm FMJ ammo and noticed a slight bulge around the entry of lead round.

I was about to ask if you had bought remanufactured ammunition but you were quite clear about its newness. Were you shooting it out of a pistol or a pistol calibre carbine?

@@TheRedneckPreppy haven't hit the range yet, I'm just a little curious because I was comparing it with the few new rounds left : 9mm Lugar 124gr round cartridges, these don't have slight bulges. I know the manufacturing of the previous version had recalls, I guess I'll need to reach out to Browning just to make sure ✌️

Hey RP - have you ever tried the rubber O ring method at the base of the case body to take up slop in the chambre? (12mm outer diameter and 1mm thickness)

I never have -- I always mean to do a test to see how well it actually works. I think I even have the darned o-rings too...perhaps an experiment to run with a control group and test group...

@@TheRedneckPreppy I have a dental pick en route. Shot some 303 on the weekend and the brass has a distinct ring near the base.
