I love the way Bart's Zappa Mustache/Beard gives his reviews an air of seriousness and authority.
Boom. I like the way you talk Alan
Great side by side bottle review, gents! The sherry Kilkerran 8 bottle Alan the Whisky Friend has been raving over. Can't wait for it to arrive in the states! Cheers!
thanks Richie!
Love me some dank moldy basement and some grandma:) We just filmed our review of the new sherry 8 CS tonight. I enjoyed it a lot ,but it didn't wow me as much as it did to a lot of other people....and you know I love Springbank and Campbeltown:) It definitely takes a long time to open up. Great review as usual gentlemen.
thanks Keith, will give your review a watch.
Great review and comments on both Kilkerrans, gents! I'm a big Campbeltown fan, so of course I'm biased, but these expressions just blow my socks off when I think they're both just 8 years old. As you both said, the nose on both expressions is just beautifully intense and multifaceted and you could easily be excused for thinking you had a much older and more complex dram in your glass. The palate - for both 8-year-old expressions - promises sheer fun and enjoyment, and that's what you get. Glengyle have the honesty to put a big number "8" on both bottles, so we know what we're buying. Respect! And for just 8 years, there's a complexity here which tickles my toes and has me asking for more. The quality of the casks just screams out "class" and, when you add water, both are good swimmers and show themselves in a new light, opened up and ready to go. IN fact, I prefer them both with a teaspoon of water: the ex-bourbon cask with about a half a teaspoon, and the ex-Sherry casks with a full teaspoon. Those are the points where I reached my sweet spots and really got into both drams. Just by the way, the European release here on the German market (ex-bourbon) is bottled at 55.7% ABV, so it's a little different to the American release. The ex-Sherry however is the same. Many thanks again, lads, for the fine review. Sounds like Campbeltown is growing on you, slowly but surely. Cheers!
I think there have been three releases of 8 Year Old Cask Strength. One at 55.7, another at 56.2, and this one at 57.1. Only way of identifying which batch is by ABV unfortunately.
Hello Russell...Can you tell me where to buy the sherry one?? I cannot find it anywhere........... :(
spot on with the notes Russell!
Was just wondering how these two drams might mix so I've created a new single malt dram out of 2 desert spoons of the ex-bourbon expression combined with just 1 desert spoon of the ex-Sherry cask expression. A few drops of water and - viola! - a superb new malt. Give it a try. Cheers!
that sounds like a great idea Russell!
Or even a drop of the 8 sherry into the standard 12?
Scott this bottle is a steal under 100, no questions about it! There is so much flavor and layers with it. The older flavor notes that you are getting are probably from the re-charring of the oloroso casks and the dunnage warehouse. Also, Kilkerran is owned by J & A Mitchell & Co. which owns Springbank. They distill the Kilkerran bottlings at the Glengyle Distillery but age the casks in the Springbank warehouses, hence the similar funk. You guys didn't mention peat. I think the 57.1% version has a good amount of peat smoke in it. I highly recommend this bottle and yes it should be showing up in the states soon!
i think the funk is masking some of the peat. will see if it shows up with some more air.
This was a funny review - Perplexing. I can understand that. Was dying for you to mix the two.
we need to try that!
Looking forward to trying these whiskies, the 8yo Bourbon in on the way. I'll be getting the 12yo in March and the 8yo Sherry in May (that's when they're released in Sweden. I'd like to give you guys a tip while I'm at it: The GlenAllachie range, and the independent bottlings from Wemyss malts. Cheers.
Great review fellas. I am excited to try this one and hopefully it shows up in the US soon. 👍
i will pick up another bottle when it does. Scott
Kilkerran is putting out some fantastic whisky. I love the oloroso 8 and am still kicking myself for not getting backup bottles.
hearing its coming to the states at some point.
haha, you guys are welcome in Toronto if you wanna watch some exciting hockey :) Great review, I just cracked the 8 sherry, very nice pour so far, cheers!
i don't know about all that hockey stuff, but whisky for sure!
Who doesn’t like granny’s basement? Both sound amazing guys!! Great review!! Cheers!!🥃
thanks Oak and Smoke.
We just started to get the 12 no chance to find the 8 here. However I am very happy to have the 12 availible.
thats one we haven't had.
Great review guys... I was sipping the Oloroso 8 last night funnily enough :-) Almost through one bottle over the past 4 months. My notes from Oct 2019 when i opened this bottle. Notes: My first Kilkerran and was presently surprised to find it’s Hazelburnesq I’ve tried Hazelburn 14y 2004 Oloroso (2 bottles 😜) and if you stood them side-by-side and tasted blind, the only way you tell the Kilkerran From the Hazelburn is from the higher levels of BBQ char smoke and ABV, which carries through from nose to finish. Nose (sweet char smoke, light ash and red berries), spicy, more char and then a well balanced combo of sherry influences (not a sherry bomb) but sweet enough to enjoy the nose. The palate; sweet on entry a mix of toffee, honeycomb, some faint mint and some floral notes and then big char, liquorice, leather, smoke, spice (mmm) and then more dry BBQ char, long. With water the char and smoke becomes lighter, faint and the dram becomes more viscous and sticky and oily, sweeter, the sherry becomes more prominent with water, yummy. I prefer with a drop of water. This will only improve with oxidisation, great value. Thumbs up 👍 My first Kilkerran but won’t be my last 😎 End notes: I have since purchased another 2 bottles as backup :-) Cheers
Hello JW..Can you tell me where to buy the sherry one?? I cannot find it anywhere........... :(
Very nice, great notes JK!
@@gman5986 I tend to use a combination of auctions, secondary markets and retailers but most retailers have sold out but plenty available on: scotchwhiskyauctions.com, whiskyauctioneer.com both ship globally, good luck.
@@justinkean Thanks JK for this info. I've never used an auction. Do you have to typically pay a much higher price than retail? How can you find out how much shipping cost will be before you bid?............Slainte'
@@gman5986 Price wise depends on the lot in question but i usually save on average 30% on retail release prices at auctions for my bar bottles (none-collectables) but collectors items usually average at least release prices and then some % mark up depends how rare and exclusive the bottle. Be very disciplined at auction don't get carried away with bidding wars, research your bottles prices and there availability beforehand, stick to a average known auction price you are prepared to pay through research and don't bid more than that price or what you can afford. Walk away if need be as there is always another auction next week, the week after and after that... My advice don't follow the hype bottles buy what you would like to drink that way when the whisky market pops you will have bottles you would happily consume at the right price and if what you pick happens to end up in Jim Murray's whisky bible they the price goes ballistic, happy days :-) This page has all the info you need... www.scotchwhiskyauctions.com/delivery/ Sláinte Mhath
I'll be happy to drive down and collect any unwanted Springbank you guys have taking up space. ;)
My shelf is bare. bart
Great comparison video guys! My wife and I just did the same comparison tonight. I'm kind of right there with Scott - I might even give the sherry more like a 94/95, but am there with an 89/90 for the bourbon. Also, I wasn't quite fully agreeing with Bart's comment about the youthfulness of the 8 sherry reallly showing up on the palate. But while I still think it punches above its weightclass - after the Kilkerran comparison I poured a little bit of Springbank 12 CS, and wow it is so much more refined and rounded out compared to the more brash, aggressive 8 year kilkerran. Also protip: An equal blend of the sherry Kilkerran 8 and the Springbank 12 CS is amazing.
It’s a very fun one to compare.
mmmm combining them sounds amazing:) Good call Michael! :)
@@themaltedmancave9499 Keith, it's really quite delicious! If you replicate you'll have to let me know what you think!
Something in the water in Campbeltown😉. Good stuff!
must be!
Loved the 57.1 Oloroso, cannot believe they could do that with an eight year old. When you find the right cask it’s crazy what it can do for the juice.... Also I need some help for my next bottle, have some credits on a site and I’m trying to decide between these 4: Ledaig 19 Marsala, Balvenie 21 port, Macallan rare cask, or Macallan estate. Knowing you have tried all of these, your recommendation would be great. Love what you guys do, y’all have helped so much in my whisky journey. Thank you, you Scotch Gods. Sláinte.
i would do either the Ledaig Marsala or the Rare Cask depending on your palate preference...peat = Ledaig or sherry = Rare Cask
Scotch Test Dummies The journey started on Islay, laphroaig qc first dram that made me want to explore more. Ledaig it is. Thanks guys.
You had me at dank, moldy socks 🥃
haha! thanks Bronco!
J&A Mitchell own both Springbank & Glengyle aka Kilkerran. Craft whisky aka Cambeltown ❣️❣️❣️ Awesome review guys❗️❗️❗️
thanks Chad!
Wow, i felt so sorry i hadnt picked that one up.
But now that i see my favourite whiskytuber (Scott) who can enjoy both my all time favourite (Craigellachie 23) and the Lagavulin 12, and who doesnt really seem to enjoy it all that much, i'm relieved.
Guys, i doubt you'll read this, but give Kilchoman STR cask matured a try. It's young yet amazing.
we read every comment KGB! Will definitely watch for the STR!
Mark @Whisky Whistle picked the Sherry Cask as his 12 year or younger Scotch of the year. He is sending me a sample.
very nice, thanks Go Habs!
Man I really hope South Africa also gets some of the 8yo oloroso. We got some of the heavily peated batch 2 (haven't opened mine yet)! So maybe!? But I literally asked on social media channels when we might see some kilkerran and it was dead silence. Sadly even the store I got it from didn't post about it on social media! I went in-store I was just surprised enough to buy a bottle!
very nice and thanks for watching from South Africa!
Going through the Loches...great vocab Scott
👍
I think the funk comes mainly from the cut, likely they include more of the faints in their cut. The esters in the new make can also react with the cask to create tobacco flavor. The water, barley, drying of the malt and yeast also plays a part.
very well could be, thanks Keanou
Good job dummies. Enjoyed the comparison. 🤙
Thank you Juan
Beside the stated difference in ABV, one can differentiate the sherry from the bourbon version by the product bar code on the tube and back label. (I just compared them both in 700ml bottling.)
very nice, thanks bourbonRyeScotch!
Guys, interesting comparison. I keep thinking about buying the 12 year old. Hey, just realized Robert Burns' Day is today. Anything planned?? Speaking of sports we have a local Ax Throwing place that recently opened and a sign that says BYOB. Hope they have lots of tourniquets and bandages! Cheers!!
Just stay up range
Sherry can = "Distilled by Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd."
Bourbon can = "Distilled at Glengyle Distillery"
750's have landed in the states, boys.
been keeping my eyes open, hopefully find another bottle
@@ScotchTestDummies Just picked up 2 bottles of the sherry cask in South Carolina (along with the 2020 Longrow Red). Keep your eyes peeled, they are hitting the shelves!
Super complex whisky for an 8 years old checked it last week. 👍
agreed!
Kilkerran is just great! Whoever considers himself a Springbank fan will love this too.
I guess he would also appreciate that, it's a bit different though. When Springbank and Kilkerran might be seen as stepbrothers, Glenscotia could be their cousin.
definitely
that too
Didn't you ever try the Kilkerran 12 year on your channel? I'm really looking for it.
I thought we did but hard to remember
I haven't been able to find a bottle of the sherry version in my parts in the Chicago area.
i don't believe its showed up yet but supposedly is still coming.
I've had both of these. I think I remember the bourbon cask was better? The trick with all the younger cask strength whiskies is getting the water just right. If you don't like one, add a little more (or less) water and you'll be shocked with the change.
definitely helps!
I'm still on the fence about that Campbeltown funk. Usually, I want to go full Islay or nothing... Campbeltown funk is somewhere in between the two extremes. Perplexed is a good word...
interesting as well
Hello Scott...Can you tell me where to buy the sherry one?? I cannot find it anywhere........... :(
been looking online and can't find it anymore, will continue looking. Make sure if you find it that its the 57% bottle. 56 % is last years and 55% the year before that.
Love the funk.
love hate relationship
I have the 57.1% bottling and it is superb!! Fantastic bottle! Good value too in Scotland. :-)
It really is!
"Moldy socks" 👍🤠👍
lol
Just arrived in the US now (October) at $110
wow, about time, i may need to source one!
@@ScotchTestDummies I have only seen it at K&L CA (sold out) so far but it should start popping up.
Been waiting 9 months for this... just scored 2 for $95 each! The color is amazing, can't wait to try it, Cheers Dummies!!!
@@100puremustard5 Yes. Good price.
Whooaa did not see a 92 coming.
its very intriguing!
I didn´t know cobwebs have a smell, Bart!?
And I thought Bart is the short version of Bartender?
Bart smells a lot of things, sometimes without asking.
Isn’t 8 YO Oloroso Cask amazing for that age and price? I think it is :-) Thank you for the review.
First bottle I picked up was 70CAD. Next bottle after the original bunch sold out was 120CAD. Regret nothing though.
Robin Sharkey $70?
@@jasonfisk1568 to be fair it was on sale when it hit the store...
Robin Sharkey Pretty sure KK8 was except from any discounts at CC, but if you got it for $70 good deal.
yes it is!
I just love the new 8, every time i had it so far was a WOW moment. It is so good for an 8 year old, maby they added some older casks in this batch.
Hello Whisky Weekend Dram...Can you tell me where to buy the sherry one?? I cannot find it anywhere........... :(
definitely best 8 year i've had!
@@gman5986 in europ its almost gone, in a local shop you could find it. And look for whiskybase.com at the secondary market. Other parts off the world i don't know where to get it.
Well a little disappointing so far. My bottle has now been opened for 10 weeks now, 1 inch below neck pour, and tasting again as I write this review. Nice sherry nose but a bit harsh alcohol burn with some funky flavors. Altogether my feeling = Just OK! I'll check in another month to see if things have toned down and mellowed out from oxidation. I'll rate 86 at this time.
campbeltown funky flavors
@@ScotchTestDummies I may have missed it from your previous videos but where and why do they have these funky flavors?
The sherry one is 57.1%, that’s how you spot the diffrence. 56.3% for the regular.
Jason Voorheese In taste, yes, very much. It really is a must have (Belgium is about 55€)
Hello Wernerjacq...Can you tell me where to buy the sherry one?? I cannot find it anywhere........... :(
i haven't seen it online since I bought this bottle G Man. Keep watching though its supposed to show up stateside soon in limited quantity.
yes
the 57.1 is this years and is the sherry cask one, last years at 56.3 isn't sherry casked, only ex bourbon cask.
Luckily Bart's wife didn't kill him for his mistake. Very nice wife indeed.
👍
Hi bart and Scott
I would give you a hundred dollars 💵for a kilkerran 8year old sherry cask, and pay for the shipping cost, I can't get this whiskey where I live, if interested let me know, I may even trade for a bottle of scotch I have, let me know !!!
I wish i had another bottle myself. Only ever got one and its about 2/3 gone.
Otherwise a great rewiew...
thanks Mats, as far as the yelling, he does that sometimes.
Why the terrible screaming!!!??? Unproffesional...
Lol
New Jack Daniels bonded and triple mash. Bottle republican. Store.
