    Second time watching this review after I was able to find this same bottle! On a layover in LA for a whole day so decided to go whiskey hunting. First found a Springbank 15yr (top 3 scotches in my opinion) and then remembered your review so asked if they had any Kilkerran. Had a few bottles in the back and found 2 bottles of the 8yr Cask Stength, but remembered to check for 57.1%, so thank you for explaining!! It is on full allocation here and some stores are headed into price gouging (??? or maybe that begs the question of how high would you each pay for this?) territory on pricing (one place just hit $130 CDN a couple days ago). Glad you guys reviewed this. Yes it has a lot of depth! Layers of flavors. As Drew typed in the description, the sherry casks were re-charred oloroso butts and hogsheads. This is a better/polished version of the Longrow 14yr sherry IMO. If you still have some of the 14yr, maybe try them side by side. The sherry profile is cleaner, not as dirty or sulphury as the Longrow. Better casks maybe? Price point was great. What's not to like? This Kilkerran and the Adelphi Caol Ila 8yr cask 311709 were my 2 favorite whiskies of the year. Now I need to find that 750ml 15yr Oloroso version :) Cheers

    Great review! A unanimous 4/4 right out of the gate for 2020! I've really enjoyed the 12, but I'll def be keeping an eye out for this one. Had a question about the "I cannot believe this is an 8 year-old whisky" -type reactions. Am I right in assuming there's likely some older stock enhancing this expression? I'm sure the answer is either "No, you've misunderstood"" or "Duh, of course there is!" but I didn't hear it mentioned and was just wondering.
    My understanding is that "cask-strength" doesn't imply a single cask, and that an age statement has to reflect the YOUNGEST whisky involved when several casks are vatted together. So - at least in theory - couldn't Kilkerran have used some percentage of much older (say, 16/18yo) Oloroso aged stock to give it more complexity and oomph, while still legally required to have the 8yo age statement?
    (Again, I'm either misinformed or stating the obvious, but I'd appreciate any info either way.)

    • @Scotch4Dummies
      @Scotch4Dummies  4 года назад +2

      Hey Josh! First, yes right out of the damned gate....I can't believe that and hope it's a sign of what 2020 is going to be like!
      Now on to your larger point! You are absolutely correct with your understanding of "age statements" and "Cask-Strength" terms. So, in theory they could very easily have used some older stock! Now let's examine a little further. They didn't start production until 2004, so they don't have much "older" stock to choose from, although they do have some I'm sure, it's just at this stage I'm sure they are still laying down spirit like mad men trying to get a base foundation of older stock! Although, the practice of using some older stock is done in the industry you have to remember that this older stock can usually be bottle as an older age statement and bring a higher retail price (which is needed to recoup the cost of storing it longer). So, sometimes it's done to save that younger stock or make it more palatable or maybe it's done to off older stock that just can't stand on it's own...or a combination of both! But to get to the crux of it with this bottle....we just don't know! They don't give much detail or information. Hell they don't even list the maturation on the bottle (or can). We need some insider info on this bottle to get to it's guts!
      Anywho, long drawn out response to a great comment. Thanks for watching (and commenting)! Cheers, ~Mark

      @@Scotch4Dummies
      Mark,
      A week late, but I wanted to thank you for such a thoughtful and detailed reply! Really appreciate the info. Somewhere in the back of my brain I knew Kilkerran was a young distillery (you guys said it right in this review!), but I may have confused them for one of those "mothballed" outfits that has older stock laying around during a dormant period, instead of being a startup building on just the dry bones of a looong-gone producer.
      Their website has the rather cheeky and fun descriptions of both "The Newest Old Distillery In Campbeltown" and "Campbeltown's Oldest New Distillery"!
      Def get the cost/benefit analysis you describe on whether Kilkerran might top this up with a small % of older casks, and I suspect you may be right about them being more focused on "laying down spirit like mad men" trying to build up aged stock. (Esp. Oloroso casks, which must surely comprise less of their stock than ex-bourbon.) Whatever they're doing, I hope they keep doing it....just wish I could find more of their stuff!
      Thanks again for the awesome response! Really enjoy your channel and content....
      All the best,
      Joshua

    @nagygabor4177 4 года назад +2

    Have you guys ever come across a cask strength whisky that wasn't transformed by adding water? For me personally, tasting 55+ ABV stuff neat is just a way of approaching the malt, I need below 50 the majority of the time to actually taste it in its complexity. Aberlour A'bunadh is a prime example, batch 57 that I've got is almost undrinkable for me neat, harsh and way too dense, but with quite a lot of water it's brilliant.

    • @Scotch4Dummies
      @Scotch4Dummies  4 года назад +1

      Honestly Nagy I have. It's not often, but there are times that water just kills it! Most often the higher the ABV the more water it can handle, that just makes sense and as you mentioned most often it is transformed. But there are times when a few drops or a teaspoon and the dram is just dead! I'm not talking to where it's "bad" (although not all transformations are good), but I mean literally just dead, flat...bland...
      On the flip side there are some cask strength (high ABV) whiskies out there that don't drink high (or hot)….so, like everything with this wonderful elixir, it all comes down to personal taste! ;-) Cheers, ~Mark

    I'd love to buy a bottle....if I had any clue where to buy it.

    • @Scotch4Dummies

      That's the tough part Matt. They're not that big (comparatively speaking), so I'd start by going to their website. It does list stores in the UK and importers for other countries. When this showed up online, the Sherry Bombers of the scotch world (folks that love these deep bold sherry matured scotches spread the word like wild fire and buy up 3-6 bottles a piece so it tends to dry up fast.
      Now, on the flip side, here's a silver lining of hope! Because this is not a common place well known name you very well may find it on a shelf somewhere just sitting because nobody knows enough about it to buy it! That is when you pounce and you buy every damn bottle that store has, you won't be disappointed and if the offshoot 1 in a million that you don't care for it you'll be able to off load on the secondary with ease!!! Cheers, ~Mark

      @@Scotch4Dummies You can do it Mark! I know you can. Think about having a sip of that wonderful Scotch in December or around Thanksgiving and reflecting back to when you first tried it. Worth the effort.

    Holy crap this one sounds amazing. We were just talking about it in the discord a day or so ago after I picked up the 8 year old bourbon version. Which is also quite lovely. But this seems like an entirely different level. I think I left an empty sample bottle at the bar ;) Ha ha....

    These bottles seems very hard to find. Will they rise in value? I found one with an ABV of 55.7%.

    • @Scotch4Dummies
      @Scotch4Dummies  3 года назад

      Some will...some won't. The Sherry matured ones seem to be extremely popular. The 2020 one is Sherry matured and has an ABV of 57.1%. This year's is also Sherry matured and has an ABV of 56.9%.
      Last year's is all buy got and this year's has yet to hit the states but will for disappear quickly so be on the lookout out!

    Ah fuck, I don't really want you guys biging this up but I can't say I disagree with your opinion. It's good whisky but lets not get carried away. Tasting is so subjective - Bananas Foster means next to nothing over the pond although we love the sound of it. It needs water - It's 57 % for goodness sake. Look Kilcherran, Benromach and Glen Scotia are doing great things. Stop with the big guns that are fleecing us and look at the stuff under the radar. Cheers. WT

    why don't you guys pour 1 glass (each) 20 minutes early and 1 glass 10minutes early, talk, compare, always try water after tasting a couple times. I'm a noob (only 20 or so various bottles of diff. scotches, multiple on faves) . I agree with most of your reviews but Springbank 10 tastes way diff. after 40 min. with water added than it does 10 min. after pouring without water. If you buy a backup bottle, crack it when the first bottle is mostly gone. Use a funnel to pour 10% from bottle 2 into bottle 1 or a mason jar and it helps get rid of " the neck pour" taste.

      I would say it’s richer due to the casking and lighter on the funk. Very tasty.
