Wow, Dimash TOTALLY lived up to the hype -- what an incredible vocal talent! I really, really enjoyed analyzing this one -- Dimash does so many amazing things with his voice, and it was a lot of fun to break them down. Looking forward to the next one! Also, I tried uploading this video FIVE TIMES with varying degrees of blurring, darkening, overlaying text, etc. to avoid copyright issues, and this is what I landed on. I saw that Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice managed to upload a totally clean video and I have no idea how -- I'm guessing that because her channel is so successful, she probably has power to negotiate since she can give an artist a ton of exposure. Anyway, hope you enjoy!!

Elizabeth (to be precise, her husband) actually negotiated with Yoola (company doing the youtube stuff for Dimash) for a long long time and finally got the permission to upload any reaction to him without the fear of getting blocked. Normal reactors like you and pretty much everyone else will unfortunately have some problems with Yoola though. The most important thing though is to see your reactions and hear your thoughts because most of us viewers will already have watched the video a lot of times. So no worries if you have to blur it or put an overlay over the video, it's totally fine.
I loved your reaction & the knowledge you've brought into it. Already subbed to you after your reaction on voiceplay but Dimash is my fav singer of all time for sure, so I'm happy you found him!!! If you want to hear a more operatic performance of him, there is a fresh upload of Ogni Pietra (original) on his channel: ruclips.net/video/TLOVgO8cvx0/видео.html
It is from his digital concert from January this year. The backstage part is lip synced (show for the start of the concert) but once he is on the stage it's all live.

Thanks for your analysis, it was awesome and very informative
Maybe if you want a more operatic style, you can listen to Ulisse. It's a duet with a full on opera singer (Aida Garifulina). He stays very conventional until the very last notes where he soars with her. Otherwise, there is also Ti amo cosi and he sings with Aida and Lara Fabian who is a pop singer, not fully operatic but I believe he stays in the ranks for the whole song..

I saw him years ago in a small theatre in LA for a Kazahstan cultural event. He literally ran in as it was about to start. They held for 10 minutes for him to check the mic, etc. He sang 2 songs with music on tape. The sound system was rudimentary. The mic was very dry - no reverb, etc. I was front row center. He had to pull back off the mic - honestly he didn't need one. I'm saying this as someone who ran a musical theatre company for 20 years in a 1,200 seat theatre- his power and control are stunning.
Someone asked what genre he sang in and I answered "yes".

The instrument at the beginning and further on is the Kobyz, a traditional Kazach instrument. Dimash IS also an opera singer though, he was invited to come work at the opera of Astana, but he turned the offer down because this was not what he wanted to limit himself to. He wants to do everything; opera, jazz, pop, soul, folk, ...he even raps. At the moment his range is at least from C2 to D8, but it's still evolving. Apart from that he's a multi instrumentalist (piano, drums, dombra, ...). But I think the most impressive thing is his humble, grateful, respectful enchanting personality.
Maybe fun for you to check out Olympico (Ogni Pietra).

I think people get very confused between what Opera is and what Classical training is. Dimash has never called himself an opera singer, and the only piece of Opera I’ve heard him sing was from Lucia Di Lammermoor, the aria from the mad scene. It’s used in the Fifth Element to precede the Diva Dance which he sings as well. Even the song Tu Vas ma Detruire he sings with Sundet is from a musical and not an opera. His is however classically trained in the Bel Canto style, as well as his Jazz training and musical theatre. His musical education has been excellent.
His classical training as well as everything else gives him the vocal techniques he employs is the cross-over genre which is the style in which he has said he hopes to further his career. But who knows where this magnificent singer will end up because he can’t be boxed in , he turned down the opportunity to sing in an opera company, he wants to do his own thing which includes singing his own compositions.
Thank you so much for not having a classical bias and seeing this quality singer for what he is, and for appreciating the skill he has and the work it has taken to get there.
STRANGER has become one of my favourites, but I have many where Dimash is concerned.

Hi Peter, I really enjoyed your reaction. And also a very smart thing to do not to look at Dimash's voice through the lens of an operatic proficient person, because , as you said, it's crossovers that Dimash is good at. I have been watching Dimash for about 3 years now and I have seen a lot of reactions to him; first step is the amazement, second step is to find flaws in his voice; third step is usually giving up on the second step and return to the first step. Dimash does not deal in perfection; at times he brings some of his native country folk layers into his musical creations and that sounds exotic to western people. I am from Eastern Europe and I am a bit closer to the Kazaksthan culture and it still amazes me every time I listen to him. Good points throughout your reaction, you are a smart man. Keep up !

Asia Музыка gave this info about the Kobyz instrument: It is an ancient tool of the people who lived in the East, including nomads. It was used in ancient times by steppe shamans-healers for various rites.
The Kobyz is made from a single piece of wood. This is one of the oldest ways of making musical instruments in the history of mankind. It is not due to technical backwardness or the lack of metal devices.
According to the ancient beliefs of many peoples, only in a single piece will the living singing soul of the tree remain, which will sound in the instrument.
The open body and strings of the kobyz from a bunch of 30-60 untwisted horsehair give a very thick, overtone-rich timbre. The musician Olzhas Kurmanbek,is probably the best player in the world right now. Dimash's ending note is held for 19.52 seconds.

He is classically trained and turned down an offer to sing opera. He wanted to do “his” style and change the way music is heard today. He will keep surprising you with each new song he sings. So please check out more amazing songs, by this amazing young man.🎼🎶🎤🇰🇿❤️🇺🇸👏👏👏👏

The instrument is a kobyz--supposedly the earliest stringed instrument of its type. It differs from most stringed instruments (violin, cello, guitar, etc) in that the strings are not pressed down onto the fretboard as the instrumentalist makes the sounds. The player slides his fingers up and down on the strings (two, by the way) as he bows to make it's distinctive sound sliding up and down from note to note.
It is a traditional instrument played by shamans and is reputed to have healing properties and be effective against disease and death.
Dimash is classically trained; his mom is a well-known opera singer in Kazakhstan. He was offered a position in their national opera company but preferred to strike out in his own style (thank goodness--otherwise the world probably would not have heard of him)
He does sing with an opera quality in a couple of pieces--listen to Ulisse that he sings with Aida Garifullina (a little amusing to me at the end where he takes the high note :)), and in Olympico he comes pretty close.

You might also want to consider listening to SOS (d'un terrien en détresse) either the 2017 "I Am A Singer" version or the 2018 Slavic Bazaar performance, Sinful Passion (Greshnaya Strast), Love is like a Dream, Your Love, Ogni Pietra (Olimpico), Confessa & Diva Dance, Diva Dance (Bastau Concert), Opera 2, Across Endless Dimensions, Ti Amo Cosi (with Lara Fabian and Aida Garifullina), Ulisse (Duet with Aida Garifullina), and Know (both the regular performance as well as the vocalise). Also, his covers from the 2017 "I Am A Singer" competition Lara Fabian's "Adagio", Celine Dion's "All by Myself", and Freddie Mercury's "The Show Must Go On". His "I Am A Singer" 2018 guest performance of Lionel Richie's "Hello" is a must. His traditional and Chinese songs are also amazing: Adai+Daididau, Samal Tau (2020 Tokyo Jazz Festival), Qairan Elim (Holy Land), Elim Menin (My Homeland), Karagym-ai, Daybreak, Autumn Strong. And then there are Without You, Love Of Tired Swans, Where Love Lives, Unforgettable Day, I Miss You, Passione, Give Me Love, Marigold, Golden, Mademoiselle Hyde, Screaming, Tu Vas Me Détruire (duet with Sundet Baigojin), his latest music video “Be With Me”, just to name a few. His latest songs “Fly Away”, "Stranger", and “Ave Maria” just debuted live at New Wave 2021, and the latter two are on a whole new level. There is also the release from the 2021 Tokyo Jazz Festival of “Ikanaide” that is absolutely incredible. He sings in almost flawless Japanese. Just avoid any performance from "The World's Best" show/competition. The producers' conduct was disgraceful and unprofessional, and all performances were cut and edited to make room for commercials.

He sings a bit more in the style of opera I guess......(I really don’t have any knowledge of the genres, just a little knowledge from RUclips videos)...... and the more recent version of that song would be better I guess...... versions really have nothing different in what he does vocally, I just think the backing music in the recent one is the better one of all, as of now... and he sings from baritone to soprano, again there’s that wide range of his.......hope you do react to it 😊

Peter!

Stumbled upon your channel by accident (well, YT recommended it. haha). Truly enjoyed your reaction and analysis. I learned a lot from Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice, and I'm learning new things from you too! (if any Dimash's fans tell you that you paused too many times, IGNORE them! haha. Great that you pause and rewind, and that you tell your thoughts as you observe). * subscribed *

I think "Sinful Passion" shows his crazy range and techniques the best. As far as the highest note he hits, I believe it's a D8, but I don't remember which performance that is in.

    Good to see someone who understands in detail precisely what Dimash is doing with his voice Dimash has Operatic training & apparently was offered a place at the National Kazakhstan Opera Co. but declined in order to follow his interests in cross over / multi genre composition & performance. However he does dip back in to doing some Operatic pieces ( see his performance in 'TI AMO COSI' with Aida Garifullina & Lara Fabian. etc.}
His recent new version of 'Ave Maria' - also at this Sochi New Wave event - is far more classical, but he also likes to play with far more modern pop pieces as well that he give a DQ 'twist' to.
