Just found out a few years before my Mother passed away that this incredible man and writer of song was my uncle . . . So Very Proud of Him . . Rest In Peace Uncle Mickey . . This is the PERFECT version
He was born in Houston in 1940, I was born there in 1937. We were both musicians of different backgrounds. We never met and had never heard of each other, our paths had never crossed. I first heard of Mickey after he had passed away. I am still astounded by his talent combination, a brilliant song writer with endless creativity and a beautiful, beautiful singer. As with so many wonderful discoveries I was late to the scene and so many of my loves came to my attention after they had been sensations for many years. I’m embarrassed to admit that the BG’s were names that i vaguely was aware of and the internet was responsible for much of my education. Mickey Newberry is now embedded in my mind forever, I think I have hard copies of every song he ever wrote or sang. His American Trilogy, performed with beautiful violinist/fiddler Marie Rhines is played in my home every week.
Elvis did with this song what he did best.....looked at other people's work from different angles and got even more out of it. Mickey's song is beautiful and he has a wonderful voice to match. Well done, indeed. Elvis saw that....he looked at the bones of the song and fleshed it out in ways Mickey probably never envisioned...to add even more emotional value. Watch the Hawaii 1973 performance.....Presley is in 100% top form, and the epic dynamic range of this song (loud/soft) creates a swirl of emotions, especially when the flute solo arrives. Many people shed a tear at the point, and maybe really don't even know why. Then the band comes alive for the operatic closing, oozing with American grandness of the day. Elvis simply took the song to a new place, with Mickey's roots still intact. Kudos to both men for strong interpretations.
Who sang it better will always be an individual opinion, but we can all agree that both Elvis and Mickey put their heart and soul into this song everytime... and that's all we want and can ask for! Much love.
Wow! Love this live version. Great song great voice from the original arranger Mickey Newbury and will never be outdated. Kudos to Elvis 'team keeping it pretty much the same in terms of structure. Again beautiful performance here. Thanks for sharing.
True she wanted him to record it but she NEVER told him that. Elvis did not like anyone telling him what to record. Priscilla knowing that fact just told him he should listen to it. Elvis loved it and decided to record it. Some women know how to work a difficult man.
Absolutely great song, sung meaningfully and with pride. I am not American, but love this song. Cannot separate Elvis firm Mickey . Different performers and different interpretations. Both great!
Back in the day when I was a kid, Im talking early 70's, before there was any such thing as 24/7 TV, the local Shreveport Louisiana TV station would sign off at 12 Midnight and they would play this song with Mickey singing it every night. I would always try to stay awake long enough to hear this song. Gotta say this is near the top of my all time favorite songs.
I was actually one of Mickey's first critics. He had just got out of the Air Force and was beginning his music career, but lived in Houston at the time. I was 16 and friends with his cousin Toni, and later on would marry into the family. Mickey asked me and Toni to listen to some of his songs and tell him what we thought. He had a beautiful voice, but I never dreamed he would become so famous!
the great Mickey Newbury wrote the song then The king sang it , but yep fantastic! i done a cover myself but nobody sings it better than Elvis .. rip Mickey!
Mickey created this compilation. He was one of the greatest American singer songwriters who’s ever lived. He was a writer and artist with Acuff-Rose Publishing in Nashville. I knew him there. He was also a wonderful human being.
Congratulations to Mickey Newbury for his performance was excellent. I believe that Elvis Presley excels in this song, with his incredible voice and musical arrangement, making it unbeatable.
First of all Elvis not this guy wrote the song. Second I was responding to the guys comment where he said it was the best version ever. I dont disrespect this Mickey guy but that guy who commented is dead wrong

I bought virtually every CD of his from his widows/family run website, his live concert at the Hermitage and the book on him. He is an amazing songwriter ans performer.
I was blessed to go out on a big house boat on Old Hickory lake and Mickey use to sing for a very small crowd...Hank Cockran & Jeannie Sealy, and a few others. Its some thing to have heard it in person!
Mickey being the one who put these songs together, naturally does a very meaningful, heartfelt redition, he lives the words, and lends his own timing to give emphasis where he wishes, which is what great performers do. Elvis puts his all into it and gives a powerful performance, but l have played Mickeys recording of it since he first recorded it and have always loved his heartfelt rendition. Have you heard him sing, How Many Times ?lt shows what a sentimental person he is., a great writer and singer of songs who influenced many others. Well done!
I grew up listening to this very gifted singer. He had such a unique style and voice. One of the greats of his era. He was a musicians musician. Many other greats covered his music and most people think Mickey newberry covered theirs. This was Mickey newberrys songs that Elvis covered. For example
This is just such an awesome song. Elvis Presley used to sing it when he used to perform his live shows. The song was written by Mickey Newberry and this is his performance of it.
It was arranged by Mickey. It’s actually a medley of 3 traditional songs. The first was a southern folk song, the second a Union army marching song and third a Bahamian lullaby.
Especially as he put this medley together ❤️ Other beautiful versions beside Elvis’s are Larry Gatlin’s and Andy William’s (it will give you goosebumps).
Billy, Coincidentally my birth name was Gary Wilson, later changed at a very early age to Gary Henderson. after my stepfather and mother married. My love of music came from Ray henderson, i began at age 6 as a trumpet/valve trombone player, began to sing barbershop in my mid-teens and was a member of a famous all male chorus for several years. The violinist in the video is Marie Rhines,, a beautiful woman who now lives in Arizona and is well-known for her fiddler expertise and her knowledge of fiddler history and it’s early American connection to its roots in Britain and Europe. She could be considered a PHD in this classic music style, if such a degree course were available. She was about 10 years younger than Mickey, they appeared together often, and I once asked her in an email if she and Mickey were ever romantically involved. It was a normal curiosity, both committed to wonderful musical styles, both very attractive physically and emotionally. She didn’t respond, my question may have been inappropriate, or may have recalled something very peronal.,
Mickey put this together...did the Arrangement first, i had the LP it was released on... he was Great! Such talent. Then Elvis heard it & sang it... hey i'm a big Elvis fan and Love his commercialized version... Great also but Mickey can Touch your heart with just Voice and Guitar. RIP Micket.
Commercialized ? WHY because it was better produced. A much better singer. An orchestra and Elvis's voice made you feel his version . this is not nearly as good . I.M.O.
Commercial ??? Really dude ??? Released as a single, it reached #66 in Billboard , How exactly is that commercial ??? It was word of mouth that Elvis’s version became so famous
This is so beautiful. After all these years I still prefer Micky Newbury’s version to Elvis. The Elvis version was his usual powerhouse, tour de force. But, for me Micky has a quiet poignancy that is perfect for capturing the meaning of the lyrics.
Elvis (somewhat oddly) turned this song into a flag waver. Newberry’s version is nothing of the sort. It’s a period piece that captures the historical moment in a modern way.
Well I didnt appreciate the talents of Micky at the time this medley was on the radio. Of course over the time since then I've learned to appreciate beauty and this certainly qualifies. This tune on your post coaxed me to realize that. Thanks!!
I found out from my dad a few years ago that I am actually related to mickey newbury. When I say that I mean extremely distant. My dad didn't know him either just like me he found out about him when he was a kid (although in my case I was 16 when i found out). He never met him and neither did I ( he actually died in 2002 I would have been 3 at the time.) It's not like i'm his great grand daughter I think I'd be an extremely distant cousin of his. Of course since he is no longer alive I can't meet him, and even if I were to go see him he probably would have no clue who I am. Still I find it amazing that I am related to this wonderful singer, even if only a little and distantly.
The last bit is the most beautiful. The first two portions introduce both sides of the war and of the country. And then the fragment from the slave lullaby All Ny Trials both, in context of the song, suggests the end of the trials of slavery as well as acts as a dirge for the Southern loss and the loss of life overall in the war (hence why In the Land of Dixie is whistled at the end).
Mickey Newbury's haunting voice was the only voice made to sing these songs. Elvis lacked the ability to tap the sadness of the songs. It belongs to Mickey alone.

An American Trilogy
Mickey Newbury
(words & music by Newbury)
Oh I wish I was in the land of cotton
Old things they are not forgotten
Look away, look away, look away Dixieland
Oh I wish I was in Dixie, away, away
In Dixieland I take my stand to live and die in Dixie
Cause Dixieland, that's where I was born
Early Lord one frosty morning
Look away, look away, look away Dixieland
Glory, glory hallelujah
Glory, glory hallelujah
Glory, glory hallelujah
His truth is marching on
So hush little baby
Don't you cry
You know your daddy's bound to die
But all my trials, Lord will soon be over

I kind of wish Elvis had used this sparse arrangement for his version. On the other hand, it might not have been the show-stopper Elvis turned it into.
Elvis wins by a landslide
Elvis was a showman. Needed the theatrics. The only version that comes closest to Mickey's is Glen Campbell. Now those are singers.
@@scottishlore Ironic that Elvis and Glen were good friends, not to mention Cambell played guitar for Elvis during the Hollywood years.
Too bad about the sound compression.
This the original version has way more hart not to mention the talent
Thanks Warren for visiting the channel.

If Elvis sang this song today all the racist talk would heat up!
This is a wistful look back. Presley's version was "damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"
It's up to your personal choice and taste.
Thanks Robin for checking in with us.
