I wish I could have found this video 19 years ago. I had just met Mick and asked him if I could see that guitar he had been carving on. He asked me how I knew about that guitar, and I told him that I had seen it on this Ralph Emery show on a VHS tape I had borrowed from a neighbor. He said he never got to see a recording of that show and would sure like to see it. Well, I did my level best to find it, but I had since moved away and upon contacting my old neighbor never could locate that tape. I did get to look at the beautifully carved guitar though, but was afraid to pick it up. He had another guitar that I did pick up and look at though, an acoustic with a picture of his wife Susan airbrushed on the back. I think that one impressed me just a bit more. Anyhoot, I always will regret not coming through on finding that taping of this particular Ralph Emery show as he did have a fondness for Ralph, even though there was a misunderstanding about mention of him in one of Mick’s songs. But, that’s another story. Sad to say, Mick died about two years later. Doggone My Soul! Thank you for posting this, I really do appreciate it and have added it to my favorites.
Absolutely loved his music. The best instrumentation, what a lyricist, beautiful voice with impeccable phrasing. As a singer , I listened to him and was mesmerized by his work.
I enjoyed these songs from leyte island, philippines. Birmingham jail and Down in the valley were two of the songs I first learned in early 1950's as a boy.
Mickey was great and good to hear how the Trilogy was constructed. As for the shows host. 😮 can’t believe he asked what President asked for Dixie to be played 🙄
Ralph Emery was so full of himself, I always got the impression he thought he was better than his guests. Mickey Newbury was one of the best songwriters and vocalists ever.
Lol allegedly he was several sheets to the wind a good portion of the time. No one really took him very seriously, i know that but he was a Nashville insider and that kept him working
It is the first time I see Mickey Newbury, from your channel. I´m not American, but I´ve listened American Trilogy many, many times, sung by...Elvis, of course (I´m a big fan). So, thank you
I played Mick a tune a bit back at his grave. This was right after I had left Hickory lake to Oregon. I was standing on the same boat dock he used to live at, but as the day progressed the paranoia over the pandemic was closing the area down and I ended up flying to Oregon to help family. I found his grave a couple days later. A beautiful small place hidden back in the hills next to a river.
Jody I wish I could have been there... I’ve had Mickey in my soul since I was 17, and that was a long time ago. That you for that act of grace towards this man... his songs just stick to your heart. Amazing he came up with this on the spot... that’s a sign of true genius.
Just listened to your music... very much like Mickey! Your voice is very close as well. One thing about Mickey is the subtlety, in words and concept... another is about the shortness of his songs. But I’ll be listening to more of your work... I truly like it. Good work man, and thank you for it.
Hey Nelson...the stories about how these iconic pieces came about are fascinating to me..Incidentally if you have video of you playing that 12 string I'd love to post some here.
Jan Hammer Aloha Jan... sorry, been busy regrouping after the devastating slam from hurricane Matthew... but here I am, back online - hey, that's a HUGE compliment, but I'd be embarrassed to post me playing ANYTHING! Thanks, buddy... moving back to Maui in December!
By the way, thought you'd get a kick out of this: I used to live in Jerry Jeff's birthplace! He was probably born in the hospital I used to work in - A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital! That (the Leatherstocking region of the Catskills of Upstate NY) IS God's country... breathtakingly beautiful!
Nelson Sorry to be so tardy in responding. I had C spine surgery in late Oct. then spent a month in a rehab facility I am now the proud owner of two titanium rods plus 8 screws from C to C 5.It will be awhile before I post again but recovery is ongoing. I understand your reluctance to post your guitar playing. I have the same opinion of mine. My best.. Jan.
I understand and am sorry for what you've been through. Sounds like you're on the mend. Hope so. I'm in upheaval trying to move without help, vehicle or funds, so I'm hardly here at this point. So you know. Good thing's that the light at the end of this tunnel is back to tropical paradise. Ginormous amount of work to make it happen, though. So be well, get better, and cheers, mate! Aloha Nelson
great songwriter and an incredible singer!!!
Mickey was one of a kind. In a great way❤️❤️
Loved Mickey and his beautiful music for decades!

Ralph comes off as not only rude, but a fool in this interview.
Mickey is a wonderful song writer.
My Mom's cousin.... Never got the chance to meet him... Heard he was a great man!!!

Thanks for visiting The Hammer Works.
Mickey Newbury, the best ❤
Mickey and Kenny Rogers used our piano to write songs in the early years.
Truly amazing
Thanks Jody for tuning in.

Best Songwriter/singer ever!

Thanks for checking out the channel.
Is Birmingham Jail/Down in the valley on any of Mickey's recordings?
No
