      Mark Hamill has consistently spoken about how much he loves Johnson's work and thought Johnson did a far better job of The Last Jedi than he ever could, but you people take everything out of context to make him seem like he hates Johnson. If you actually paid attention to what both Hamill and Johnson are saying, you'd realise they're just being loyal to Lucas' filmmaking philosophy: that art is YOURS, and as the artist, you have the right to tell what story you want to tell, and no one has a right for their expectations to surpass your artistic endeavours. This is a tenet of cinema - auteur theory. If you don't appreciate this, you don't appreciate art. George Lucas would say the exact same thing that Johnson said. And if I was handed a Star Wars project, I would repeat and behold this sentiment. You all ramble on about how Johnson betrayed Lucas, or was disloyal to him, but you fail to realise Johnson was the only filmmaker in the Sequels to truly demonstrate Lucas' philosophy and attitudes, and at that, was more loyal to him than any of you are and any of you will be.

    I think the idea of making something "for the fans" is something everybody gets wrong, even you and Rian Johnson. The problem of Disney Star Wars is that they didn't write for the CHARACTERS. Luke, Han, Leia, and Rey, Poe, Finn. Both trios were completely wasted because Abrams and Johnson didn't write for them. A story is only as strong as its characters and JJ was too busy "reintroducing/copying" Star Wars and Rian just wanted to "subvert expectations" that the characters simply became puppets to the plot.
    In the OT and even the prequels, the story was guided by the characters and their choices. Luke chose to leave Tatooine and go save Leia. Obi-Wan chose to lose to Vader. Han chose to come back and save Luke. Luke chose to battle the Death Star. Qui-Gon chose to escape Naboo. Anakin chose to race for Qui-Gon. Padme chose to fight for Naboo. Not only do these move the plot along, but it informs the characters. Luke puts away his childish dreams and begins living them. Obi-Wan becomes stronger in death. Han becomes a more honorable person. Qui-Gon follows his intuition regardless of others' approval. Anakin wants to help others in any way he can. Padme stands for justice.
    In TFA, it's less about choices and character development as it is reacting to a story beat. Rey chooses to keep BB-8 around mainly because if she didn't, the plot would have gone on without her. She runs away from the lightsaber because the plot needed her to be captured. And I know this because in the scene before, Rey was slamming Finn for wanting to run away. Rey gets plot hole force powers because the plot wants her to save herself and fight the antagonist. Poe was supposed to die and its so obvious he's written as a throwaway character and it holds him back from much meaning. Han died because Harrison Ford wanted out and he went back to his smuggling days because Abrams thought it was "cool" and still wanted to copy ANH's story. Luke was written out because Rey wasn't good enough to hold her own in the narrative. If Mara Jade and Admiral Thrawn could become the most popular characters after being written in the EU's first book series, then Rey could do it too. And despite "respecting women" Leia is constantly underutilized by both Abrams and Johnson. I will never understand why she wasn't made into a Jedi. Girl power, anyone? Guess not. A scene of her attempting to avenge Han's death by Kylo Ren's hands would have been golden! Perhaps Rey could have even held her back. But no, she simply keeps her old position because Abrams can only copy others. Finn is the closest thing to a character arc we got, but he ended up so underwhelming. Him being a Stormtrooper has so little impact on the plot that it could be changed to him being the help on a smuggling crew and gets abandoned on Jakku where he meets Rey and BB-8. Nothing about his character needs to change.
    What does Rey stand for? What does she do to achieve her goals? Abrams was too focused on the mystery and Johnson too focused on his story to let her answer and achieve that. They tell her what to do instead of letting her choose.
    What does Finn stand for? What does he do to achieve his goals? Finn is a coward who runs away before becoming a hero, but that's just the first movie. Abrams and Johnson simply let him screw around the rest of the trilogy.
    What does Poe stand for? What does he do to achieve his goals? Poe is here because Abrams needed Han 2.0.
    And when it comes to Luke, Leia and Han? They were torn apart because Abrams and Johnson had no respect for them as characters. They were added in for nostalgia points while shoving them aside to make way for the new, boring characters.

      It's not even really about Rian not wanting to write for the fans, but for himself. It's about him not understanding that what people loved about Star Wars is what George Lucas loved writing himself. That's obviously going to be different to what Rian writes for himself. THAT is why people hated TLJ, because it was too different to what Star Wars had become to a lot of people. Star Wars was what Lucas wrote.
      When you're not the creator of the series, you need to listen to what the fans love, because they're the ones watching the new movie. The creator can write for themselves in sequels, because they ALREADY DID with their original material, and people liked it. Replace the creator with someone else, and they still need to write like the creator, or people will turn off the franchise.
      I'll never understand how a person can take over a franchise, then decide that things are going to work their way, ignoring feedback, and then complain that the old fans don't like it.

    If Johnson wanted to just make a movie “for himself” he should have realized that the middle of a trilogy is the worst possible place for doing so. The middle of a story, even one as underdeveloped as JJ opened, is the most critical part. It’s where we should have been learning about our characters and world to make us fully invested in everything going on and excited to see how it ended.
    Instead, he made a slow speed chase, denigrated every character (except precious, precious Rey) to hype his newly introduced ones, almost spitefully refused to make an explanation for plot threads set up before him, had everyone act as incompetently as possible, and shrank the already tiny scope of the conflict even smaller just to push out some bizarre spiels about war profiteering with space horses. Even that would be forgivable if he’d bother to have said anything meaningful beyond “war profiteering is bad” before it was all forgotten when they left, accomplishing nothing.

  • @DiamondDogApollo
    @DiamondDogApollo 4 года назад +20

    The problem as I see it is that somehow in recent years being “creative” equates in some minds (Rian Johnson being top of the list) to actively trying to piss off fans. There is LONG list of art that managed to be creative, wasn’t created to satisfy some imaginary checklist, but did actively divide people.
    The Mandalorian is a perfect example. I doubt there were few fans that had “Boba Fett knockoff and Baby Yoda go on an adventure” on this so called list of things they wanted. It has no classic characters, it has a prominent female character, it played a bit with the lore, but it didn’t spit in the face of a significant chuck of the audience. That’s why it’s a massive hit and The Last Jedi ended up causing the next two Star Wars movies to be financial disappointments.

    Hey Thor Skywalker,
    I would point out one glaring difference between Johnson, who dares to invoke Lucas’s name in his defense, and Lucas himself. This is an issue that has plagued all the movies that have come after Return of the Jedi and even some story lines outside the movies! The real reason why Lucas’ films appeal to such a wide fan base is crazy simple, he took a very deep dive into universal human mythologies, interweaving the rise and terrible fall of pride that is the story of Anakin (Prometheus and many, many other similar stories), then the hero’s journey of Luke to rise to become the person he was meant to be and finally the redemption of Anakin by Luke celebrating the power of love to conquer all. There are no such epic stories being told in any of the First Order/Resistance sequels so they fall flat EVER TIME!
    Johnson is totally dead wrong about Lucas! Lucas did loads of research and talked with icons like Joseph Campbell, because he was completely dedicated to creating a powerful, moving, saga. He desire was to tap into the human ancestral memory of such basic and super powerful stories that have shaped us as a species and retelling them in an epic space opera. Johnson, in contrast, has zero vision except to comically toss such epic story line right off a cliff (genius, NOT!). He either hasn’t done a stitch of homework on what inspired Lucas to create the original movies or he simply don’t care. Instead like some head strong teenager Johnson thumbs his nose at what had come before but instead of giving us something better (a new take on an epic mythology), he begs us to let go of the past (which he has already shredded), only to punk us by saying ‘no really, you should remembrance the break pieces of the franchise.’ It’s truly just a big FU to both Lucas and the fandom!
    In short, Johnson is a stunningly cynical no talent who, and like Kathleen Kennedy, has ZERO vision going forward for Star Wars. They both act like they are enjoy burning the franchise to the ground because they can and in their eyes it needs change! Yet clearly should visionless people should not be leading the charge!
    In stark contrast, what Favreau gets is the need for clear epic stories! The Mandalorian is a remake of the epic Western, which itself is a retelling of the hero’s journey, in this case the rise from his dark past to embrace the life of a hero who saves those in need! I honestly doubt this epic mythology is lost on either Favreau or Filoni, they know an epic story when they see it and only desire to elevate to the dizzying height that is Star Wars epic story telling!

    The whole "Lucas made movies for himself" thing isn't even "mostly true" imo. You have Dave Filoni who points out that Lucas very much cares how the fans feel. He intentionally says to remember to give the kids hope. Star Wars, for Lucas, has always been about the kids. Giving them a sci-fi fable to enjoy and learn from. He doesn't just make movies he wants to make, he makes them to they'll be received well and enjoyed by the audience, as evidenced by him selling to Disney after years of fans ripping apart the prequels because, and let's be honest here, the general fans didn't know how good they had it.
    Jar Jar wasn't horrible, but he overstayed his welcome in the first movie. If he was in it a little bit less, or the whole Jar Jar is a Sith Lord fan-theory was true, then people would have been fine with it. FIloni even explains why Duel of the Fates was SO important and how it really builds to Return of the Jedi. The prequels were good movies, but they were made for parents who grew up on the originals to take their children to see. They weren't made for the 30 year old man-children with Funko Pop all over their home. And for that purpose, they were awesome. I remember being a kid and LOVING the prequels at the time, if not a little bored during the trade negotiations stuff in the first one. As an adult I rewatched all 3 of them and they really held up, honestly. Jar Jar gets annoying, but the trade-talks are super important to understand what's happening in the galaxy. It sets up an entire civil war for Palpatine to be the character he needs to be. The point being, George did make the movies for his fans, but he made them for families, not man-children. And when those disgruntled people took to the internet to tear them up, we were all left with the sequels, made by people who weren't fans, despite what they claim. Kennedy literally said they had no source material, because she clearly didn't even know Legends existed. Nothing in Last Jedi showed Johnson was a fan of the saga. And Abrams just did his best to rehash A New Hope without understanding that his hero should have weaknesses because he clearly didn't understand one of the things that makes Luke great is that he wasn't perfect. He had to grow and become a Jedi through hard work that he didn't always want to do. He wasn't just given the Millenium Falcon and magically know how to fix it and wield a lightsaber without ever trying before.

    Lucas did a lot of things for fans. The difference was he was like a dad trying to give his kids what they wanted as long as it was good for them. Like he's willing to buy them pizza as long as they don't eat too much and eat healthy food later. We see this all the time like how he wanted Yoda to confirm Luke's parentage in Episode 6 because he was worried some kids didn't believe Vader. He also wanted Yoda to live for the kids but people talked him out of that.
    He even did this in the Prequels. He said he made Yoda fight because he knew fans wanted to see that and he made the lightsaber duels (especially Anakin vs Me) as awesome as possible for the same reasons.
    The point was, everything he did was in service of a story he was trying to tell so he could make kids love and enjoy it. He was not afraid to go against Hollywood and convention to achieve this either, he had conviction in what he was doing and always thought about how the story and how the audience would process it.
    Rian Johnson, hoever, is the kind of guy who never give his kids pizza, even once in a while. He never gives them candy, or ice cream or anything good. He doesn't even give them spinach or anything of nutrition. He deliberately give them the most bland and flavorless food all the time just because he can and he doesn't want them to be happy. It's his lame food or no food at all.

    I’m sure Johnson would’ve done fine doing independent films. Problem is that he took that mentality and imposed it on the Star Wars universe. It could even be argued that TLJ would be a perfectly fine film if it was a standalone sci fi movie. I can’t stand this attitude he has toward the fans BECAUSE it’s Star Wars. I might even agree with his comments OUTSIDE OF THIS FRANCHISE. Just don’t bring that BS into something that was established and engraved into the hearts of multiple generations of diehard audiences. This is the wrong time and place to play with those concepts. Follow the damn rules or get outta here!

      EVEN if it was a standaloen Star Wars movie it would be much more likely likely to be better received, BUT when you put his movie in the context of a trilogy or even in the context of THREE trilogies he absolutely fucked things up for the overarching story. The movies before him left a bunch of threads to build off of, he shit on every one of those by subverting just to subvert and laughed at people for caring about them and left no where to really go for the third and final movie. Even if it was a standalone movie, I still think that the overruse of comedy like your mom jokes, the ignoring of classic tech in Star Wars in favor of WW2 style bombers in space, the plots that go nowhere, the awful scenes like Snoke narrating his own death and the Finn and Rose kiss scene, and the other many problems would be an issue but they wouldn't be nearly as much of an issue if this was its own standalone thing.

But, I dunno, if what pleases me alienates the fanbase of the established franchise that I am trying to break into, maybe the universe is trying to give me a sign here. I fundamentally cannot understand the mindset of someone like Rian Johnson. If I was commissioned to direct a Star Wars film, the LAST thing in the world that I would be thinking is, "how do I make Star Wars do what I want it to?" Instead, I'd be thinking, "how am I going to do right by Star Wars and its legacy?"

      Being an artist myself (musician) I get what you mean by making art for the artist. The important difference for me at least in this case is: Johnson isn’t what I’d call the artist in this case. A good analogy would be that Lucas was the architect and Johnson the builder, or at most an interior decorator tasked to work on only one specific room. But he went and tried to shake up the foundation and then wondered when the house came down around him. I mean, the Renaissance artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo, Boticelli etc. didn’t paint/sculpt/etc. all their masterpieces themselves, some of that work was done by assistants. And that’s basically what Johnson was in this case, someone who was hired to work on someone else’s design.

    • @ShamanMcLamie
      @ShamanMcLamie 4 года назад +18

Then by the time you get to the Kitchen the accompanying rooms have been so botched in their design they are no longer capable of making a functioning kitchen.

    Y'know, Little Johnson only says he's a Star Wars fan. But, how does he back that up? He tears down the original trilogy to prop up his ONE movie. I find it funny that he acknowledges the passion of the Star Wars fans and especially how nasty some of them can be. Given what I've heard about his interactions with Star Wars fans in the past, I'm guessing he means that he's had and or started some arguments that he lost, which would explain why The Last Jedi plays out like a hate letter to the fans and the franchise itself. Honestly, I wouldn't put it past him to take the job to direct a Star Wars movie JUST so he can slap fans in the face, because he is a petty dick (hence my nickname for him). How apt that The Last Jedi has a sequence in it that involves gambling and Kathleen took a gamble on an inexperienced director and lost (as I see it).

    The thing that bothers me the most when Mark Hamill says Rian would insist they didn't have to worry about the fans but rather the story of his movie is that it's clear Johnson wasn't thinking about the story. For better or worse, JJ Abrams had established the trajectory of the story Rian Johnson was now going to tell. Johnson's task was to take what had come before and build on it. Instead, he just threw everything out the window and started telling a brand new story that feels almost totally disconnected from The Force Awakens. I honestly wouldn't mind seeing a Rian Johnson trilogy where it's all his vision. But what he did in The Last Jedi completely tanked the sequel trilogy.

    • @GlassActivist
      @GlassActivist 3 года назад

      How did Rian throw everything out the window? It is JJ who had the hero of the first trilogy disappearing with no ability to track him while the galaxy went to hell and with all the Jedi except Leia dead. That meant Rian Johnson had to explain Luke abandoning all that he fought for and his entire family. His explanation of what happened to Luke is the most plausible, given the situation. People give JJ a complete pass for Luke's trajectory, and it is total BS. What happened to Luke is on JJ. Rian redeems him in the end, and I don't think you could make a new era for Star Wars without killing all the protagonists of the first. Rian gave a free slate for where the 3rd film could go and opened it up for elements that much of the fans would enjoy (grey Jedi, the Bogun, and actual character arc for Poe and Finn), but JJ couldn't help messing up the final story with masturbatory fan service and an incoherent plot that attempted to retcon away The Last Jedi. Luke's ending echoed Obi Wan's but in a nuanced way rather than JJ's crude fan service.
      People forget that Empire was also subversive and reversed expectations, but because it was only the second film, fans were okay with it. Also, for the record, George never gave a crap about the expanded universe and said as much. He made the stories he wanted to make whether the fans liked it or not--see the prequels and midiclorians.

    • @Off-Brand_Devin
      @Off-Brand_Devin 3 года назад +1

      @@GlassActivist Not sure where you got the impression I don't think JJ Abrams is a hack of the highest order. Like I wrote before, I would have liked to seen a trilogy that was just Rian's vision, but that's not what happened. He was supposed to follow up from the first movie, but TLJ feels like it could be in a completely different trilogy*.
      Rey's parentage is the premier example of how this ruins cohesion in the sequel trilogy. TFA sets up this idea that there's some mystery to who her parents are. Then, TLJ tells us, "They're nobody." I wanted Rey's parents to be nobodies from the get go, but Johnson just made all the groundwork about who this Rey girl really is a waste of everyone's time. Sorry, that's bad storytelling. Even worse when Abrams goes and reverses it again.
      That said, what does George Lucas' feelings about the expanded universe have to do with anything? Oh, and you can "no true Star Wars fan" me on this, but I think the idea of grey Jedi is stupid.
      *This gives me an idea. Disney should have Abrams make a replacement film for TLJ while Johnson makes replacements for TFA and TROS. Then we get two trilogies that are the individual visions of each director.

      Who defines what a good or bad story is? Whether TLJ is good or not is completely up to an individual's interpretation of the film. Also I think a lot of people misinterpret what Rian said. He's not saying he doesn't care about the fans, he's saying that he was more focused on making the movie. When watching a movie you're not just watching for entertainment, you are going on the journey the director wants you to go on. TLJ is simply what Rian envisioned the next movie in the sequel trilogy was going to be, you can't exactly fault him for bringing his vision to life. The prequels were Lucas's vision as to how Anakin became Darth Vader, just as much as TLJ was Rian's vision on what came next for Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo, Luke, and Leia. It shouldn't always be about what the fans want when making a film, in fact that was one of the reasons as to why Lucas left Star Wars. The backlash of the prequels led him to believe that he couldn't be creative with the franchise anymore. Lucas said the movies wouldn't have been any fun to make if he couldn't do what he wanted. I hope when Rian makes his trilogy, that he doesn't limit himself because of the backlash from TLJ. You're fine to disagree with me, thanks for reading my comment. :)

If you're making art purely for yourself, for "artistic freedom" or "devotion to the craft" or whatever, and you aren't selling it, then sure, you can defend your art and inform people where their thinking was flawed. You made something for you, and they don't understand it like you do. HOWEVER, when you make a piece of art with THE INTENT TO SELL IT, meaning your goal is money, revenue, and NOT artistic freedom, then you don't get to tell people who spent money on your product that "they're wrong". You're not making a product for yourself. You're making it for others. Fans are the ones paying, so when they say they don't like the product they received, you better listen if you want them to keep shelling out cash for your art.

    Nobody expected the film to be successful. It would have been a small miracle if the film broke even. Lucas himself has repeatedly stated that A New Hope was "saved in the editing room." It took the input of his wife and other talented people to fix A New Hope into a box office juggernaut.
    In an alternate universe, a young George Lucas made A New Hope exactly how he imagined it back in the 1970s, and it was a total bomb!

    I believe Johnson was selfish and Abrams was just incompetent. How he managed to trick the fanbase into beliving he knew what he was doing, when The Force Awakens' "mysteries" were very clearly there because Abrams was utterly clueless about where the story was going, I shall never know.

      He clearly expected whoever made the next movie wasn't a fricken idiot which shouldn't have been a problem but the person who should have been making sure this was a success has no idea what she was doing given the magnitude of the mess TLJ resulted in.

      Pfft, as a Star Trek fan I already knew he was gonna fuck up Star Wars somehow. To be fair though, TFA isn't anywhere near as terrible as Star Trek 2009.

      @Gaius Wyrden Pretty sure from what info floating around that I've come across, Abrams had a number of boxes to tick from KK and Disney corporate, so much of this is also their (esp Iger and Kennedy's) fault.

      My best friend and I took 1 hour and came up with a much better story line for a trilogy. In the end, it's KK's fault that she and the people under her didn't even take 1 hour to come up with a story line for a trilogy. If they had, the bs of Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams couldn't have happened. There was NO PLAN for the trilogy AT ALL! That's the real problem. Rian is just a symptom of that problem.

    Basic rules if you are making a sequel ( especially in a big franchise like Star Wars)
    You are NOT on your turf
    You follow the rules
    Don’t pretend that everything that came before never happened

    from a business standpoint, Rian is for indie films, because you want something divisive and Favreau is for more big-budget commercial films because you want something everyone can enjoy

    The curtain is going up. The *entertainer* is taking his bow. He does his dance step and sings a song, even gets *all the audience* to sing along.
    Yes he knows just what do, knows how to *bring down the house* when he's through.
    With snappy patter and jokes, he knows *what pleases the folks*. The Entertainer: the Star of the show.
    Johnson is to Favreau what an "artiste" is to an entertainer.

    What makes the midichlorian issue even worse is that they actually debuted in one of the 90s books (one of Kevin Anderson's?) to much derision from fans. So *someone* involved with the prequels should have known they weren't a good idea already. And I also remember, in the months leading up to the opening of The Phantom Menace, in the midst of all the excitement, there was some worry as we started getting more info on the character of Jar Jar; some of the people who worked on him apparently thought he was really annoying.

      It's still very much going on. The last week or so I've just been super busy (with the Sequel trilogy project after putting out the casting call) so I haven't found the time to sit down and read through all the comments, which generally takes quite a bit of time.

    It should also be noted that George Lucas _did_ in some ways yield to outside pressures even in the original trilogy; the ending to Return of the Jedi was originally going to be much more bittersweet with Han dying, & Luke disappearing to find his sister (who wasn't Leia at the time). George ultimately changed the ending to be happier because of pressure from things like the toy industry, & most fans consider the ending we got out of that decision to be perfect.

    I agree with you that Favreau is, from a certain point of view, continuing the legacy of the original trilogy. On the other hand, we should also think that when there was a need to re-invent a genre and create a movie that is the foundation of an entire universe Favreau absolutely nails it with Iron Man. So I strongly believe that he's the right man to begin a new chapter in the Star Wars saga. My wish is that Disney/Lucasfilm will change the formula, abandoning the "trilogy", looking at the poor results of the last two, and concentrate their energy, both economic and creative, in one movie at the time. Yes, you can have some elements that connect the movies but without overthinking it. Marvel has shown how it can be done with great results making self-contained movies loosely interconnected one with another and usually only in the end or in the post-credit scene. Have a great day and stay safe.
