Earth used as a switch cable, had that done to me... on the first circuit when rewiring my flat a couple of years ago... I remember noticing it while having a look at the work done at the end of the first day because the switch hadn't been screwed back into place... When I confronted the "electrician" about it he went mad at me saying I was making a fuss about nothing and he wasn't going to waste any time fixing this... I got pretty angry with him at that point and told him to stop any further electrical work on my flat. It was a flat wired in the 70's and I was spending a fair amount of money to entirely reawire it and I wasn't goging to put up with that sort of crap. If a guy couldn't do something as simple as a 2 way swithc properly, what was the more complicated stuff going to be like?!

    • @regisdumoulin

Note: that job was in France but I have also seen an outside socket connected directly to the main without any fuse or power breaker of any kind (France too, but not at my place) or an internet cable being laid accros the front lawn without any protection... wich of course got cut the first time I mowed that lawn (in the UK this time)... if you get work done on your home you really need to keep an eye on what is being done and how no matter the country!

How could anyone install in such a manner that they even think it is ok that way? How could they even sleep at night? So glad you are the one who guided the client so sensitively, and I can imagine tactfully about the situation, and then sorted that mess out for them. Feel sorry for the client that they got done over by lets face it a cowboy, a lazy trades person or just a incompetent buffoon. However you got them sorted, and thats the main thing.
