Fun fact: I offered StarFlash250 a draw at the beginning because I saw that the game had been made with incorrect settings and had a 35 day limit, meaning that whoever has more properties at that point would just win the game, and if we are tied on properties the game would end in a draw. GL games are not supposed to have a day limit. It didn’t end up mattering in this match, but since Jess' powers scale better with army size compared to Jake on this map, this time limit did give me a small handicap. We didn’t talk before the game, so it was completely coincidental that I picked Jess and StarFlash250 picked Jake. I was considering whether to pick Jess or Jake, but I decided against picking Jake because there aren’t that many plains on this map, so I felt that Jake would be a bit inconsistent on this map. You also have the general problem all terrain-focused CO’s have where there are only so many terrain tiles on the map that synergize with your power, so if the game stalls out you might end up in a situation where a smaller and smaller fraction of your army actually gets to fight from the correct terrain type. In comparison all of Jess’ vehicles get the full effect of her powers regardless of the terrain they fight on, so Jess’ powers can often be more consistent and scale better with army size compared to Jake’s, though this is a bit map dependent.
@@Rambo_Florian It was definitely planned for a while. Or more specifically, it was both Jake and Jess's win conditions: have enough units in range to use the super to cripple the enemy. This situation favored Incuggarch and Jess though, as the midgame skirmishes favored them, meaning Starflash needed an especially good super position to come out ahead. Still, it took several turns for Incuggarch to find the right position to pull off a successful Super without simultaneously being open to a Jake super. In short, both players did very well, but you can see where the extra 100 points comes from!
@@Rambo_Florian I decided to do the attack only after getting the additional vision with my recon and seeing that I had a good opportunity to do a very strong attack. I was fully prepared to just hold off and wait if I didn't like what I saw.
It is also funny because I was gonna pick jess originally for the same reasoning but i overestimated how good arty range and bcopters would be at the end
Uh oh not this map Sidenote: this is basically the first time i played this map and i had no idea what i was doing, inccugarch offered draw day 1 but i refused and said i wanted to try it out xd
Oh my God, that quote in Starflashes' bio "EXPENDABLE! YOU ARE ALL EXPENDABLE!" is one that has been seared into my brain ever since I first heard it! It's from Battalion Wars where Kaiser Vlad is attacking the Tundran Outpost in the Dune Sea. Oh wow.
Oh man that attack by inccugarch was so painful to witness, 80k value wiped out just like that while Starflash's defensive position seemed perfectly fine, this would be a table flipping moment if that happened to me. Definitely an exciting match!
God, even with no plains, StarFlash held terrifying power with Jake. Literally Jake was a bit of a handicapped choice, as if he didn't know what this map was like. Jess combined with Incu's walling and time extension carried the day well. I want to see more of this player with different characters and maps. Power to you StarFlash, keep striking like lightning. Super fun to watch.
That was an insane match! Thanks for the commentary! That final push truly showed what you said about Jess being scary at the beginning... "By the way, your entire army including indirect backline is in range of my tanks now. Also, my MTs one-shot yours. See you in the next game." The word you were looking for is "concave" by the way. It's a geometry term that designs an angle that opens inwards (like a pie after cutting out the first slice). You know this, but for people who may be wondering, forming a stretched, curved line around the opponent's army means a maximum of your units are in attack range. In contrast, a straight line would mean the units on one or both ends are too far away. This is especially true when the opposing army forms a ball (rather than a line). You want your own army to be poised to wrap around that ball.
35:32 just realized they specifically targeted the lander to build power charge. The stalemate meant that they wouldn't be able to attack any other high-value units without being punished, and they were still too far from getting their super power to go all in unless they planned to sacrifice their own units to get it. Once the lander was gone though, all it took was a single extra attack on a recon to pop overdrive and win the game
I just love to open up youtube and see a new vid from Mangs. Especially when it's two of the best awbw players in the world duking it out. And even though you aren't Deejus, the match you showed today was a real.... B A N G E R !
Don’t click if you haven’t watched the game yet and don’t want to be spoiled. Inccurgarch had the income lead for a while that allowed him to get 2 M.tanks and the rocket, possibly allowed him to defend the north assault. Also this game is a proof of how devastating Jess’ powers can be, holy shit they’re so good (and my goodness is she broken in DS), I almost think that can move her to the tier above. After all they’re very cheap and she is one of the few COs that has the luxury to choose between her both powers, most COs only rely on one. On the other side, Jack didn’t take advantage of his powers at all, the choke points didn’t have much plains and I’d say he lacked the indirects. Anyways, very cool match! Inccugarch is so good.
11:35 I think a move this was supposed to prevent was StarFlash capturing southern comtower. It is possible with that transport, and once captured it'd be defended by artillery, giving a bonus to firepower for a good while before the opponent can take it back- especially if you get commtower on your half of the map too
Their play styles are completely opposite to each other. Starflash favors quick turns and live games while the former takes his turns for days. Because that Incu takes his turns so slow, Starflash loses his momentum. An unintentional tactic, maybe?
Fantastic play from both players in this match. That ending was absolutely devastating and really showed just why these two are so highly ranked. I doubt anything less decisive from incuggarch could have secured the victory either, at least not as quickly. Starflash had quite a solid defensive formation and a less destructive attack probably would have been one he could recover from. But it’s pretty clear that Incuggarch recognized that fact, which is likely why he opted to make a concave, so he could collapse his forces on Starflashes forces in a brutal, decisive, assault. Again, excellent play from both players. I always love getting to see these high-level matches because they’re always so interesting.
22:42 This is not a new bug, and it's not a problem with the replay viewer. There are certain events that AWBW doesn't properly record in the replay log. To my knowledge, it is these: 1. Moving to attack a unit, and getting trapped by an unseen unit (this is different to simply moving and getting trapped by an unseen unit, which AWBW *does* properly record) 2. Attacking a Pipe Seam There may be others, but those are the two I'm aware of. If either of these events occurs, the replay won't show them. The Replay Viewer *could* try to work around these by deducing certain actions (i.e. if it sees that a tank ends up in a position on the next turn and a pipe seam took damage, it can reasonably infer the tank must have performed that attack), but it's a hard problem to solve, and I don't blame the dev for not wanting to try to figure it out. The only real fix is for AWBW to finally properly record those events.
Incredible match between masterminds. Incuggarch showed his best defense but nearly his best attack too. What a player ! Thanks Mangs for the replay, I started to (re)play this game since a month because of your content. Keep the good job you won like and sub :)
I'd dare to say that this match wasn't only a perfect representation of 2 great players but also a representation of 2 different approaches... if not "DOCTRINES" of this WAR game. The "Dojo" of defense and counterattack vs the "Dojo" of pure attack. What a match! What an enjoyment to watch it!
I believe the bug with the pipeseam is due to the replay file itself not registering attacks made on the pipeseam itself. Deamonhunter has made some effort to fix this by resetting units at the end of a turn but its probably up to awbw itself to add these attacks into replays for them to show up correctly.
The funny thing is that Jake would be at home in AW2 if he was allowed to be there. On every Colin, Jess, Drake, and Andy campaign mission and on the ones where you get to chose your COs, think of all the times you wanted to have your direct units attack from a city, but it just was 1 movement short of making the 2 movement "move around" and so had to attack from plains? Well the answer is a lot. And think of how many times you were forced to attack from plains in the War Room? Well it's a lot. Think of how often a 3 by 3, 3 by 4, or even 3 by 6 block of plains appear adjacent to a city. Well in AW2, actually quite a bit. Jess would be trying to attack from cities and ending up attacking from plains almost all the time. League maps don't have dramatically fewer plains than AW2 campaign maps, but the central areas tend to not be nearly as plain dominated. For example, this particular map looks like Koal might be a better choice. Not because you want to attack from roads, but because movement is more important than a plains boost here and if you activate your superpower, Koal is a better version of Adder. Or just pick Jess.
Dang, what an intense game! I felt like in those two or so turns StarFlash was holding onto that SCOP, they were probably really wishing they were Jess instead of Jake. Poor artillery just weren't close enough to the front to benefit from the +1 range, just like you were saying, the lack of plain tiles killed any chance of a wall break!
Damn, absolutely loved the final attack from Incuggarch. Also very suprising outcome, for quite some time it looked like Starflash was definitely gonna win, and even until the very final attack they seemed pretty even.
