I own an XC90 2.5T inline 5 Cylinder. The transmissions are nearly bullet proof in those. The T6 on the other hand, is a complete mess with the General Motors Transmission. Though I love the idea of the T6, I went with the 2.5T because of the reliable Aisin-Warner Transmission.
My mom has one , its amazing , feels comfy , nice roomy ride and has a great entertainment system. Its mostly a family car , not to please you with good looks or if it sounds like a go kart .. its safe and is like no other VOLVO!FOR!LIFE!
hi! have you had any transmission issues with the T6? I have found one on 146.000 km... The transmission has been changed before the owner says.. what are the odds what I may live the same issue again? thanks..
The Volvo XC90 is big, comfortable, safe and overall a good SUV. It's one of the few CUVs that I actually like. SUVs are very unstable, because they are more likely to end up in a rollover accident than a car due to high center of gravity. The engineers at Volvo thought about this and decided to implement a unique safety system. The way this safety system works is that it basically has a steel structure in order to prevent the outcome of a rollover accident. It's was a good idea and makes the Volvo XC90 arguably safer than any other SUV out there. Oh and just like Volkswagen Touraeg, it is also off-road capable. The Volvo XC90 and the Volkswagen Touraeg are the only CUVs that I know of that are off-road capable.
Scott, as a proud XC90 owner, I can tell you that it is a great car. I have the 2011 3.2 version. We have owned it for six years and we are currently thinking about trading it in for the newer generation, but it still runs perfectly and is irreplaceable. As much as I like its competitor, the Audi Q7, I would still pick the XC90 over it.
we have one too. Ours is a 2006 with about 80,000 miles on it so we are looking to get a new one. I'm sort of disappointed that the 2013 model year is basically the same exact car so we don't want that, but still LOVE our volvo!
My mom has a 2011 Xc90 and i love this thing i don't know why?? its really comfy the seats are like so comfortable and its super CLASSY. mostly EVERYONE in my neighborhood has one including my professors at my college. my 2001 s60 is nice but do-sent compare to the new gen seats which are even more classy. Even though it gets the gas mill-edge of my neighbors 2006 Land-rover Lr3 we still enjoy it! VOLVO FOR LIFE!
Transmission on all T6 engines last about 60k miles - think $6K for a rebuilt which may or may not last 40K miles AWD surely die near 100k, spin the shaft propeller by hand, if it moves the angle gear is gone, count a few 1000's at the dealer Bearings won't last, various front suspension parts fail at 100k miles. Then wait for more 'regular' issues, like with any other cars.
Yes the 2003-2004-2005 T6 XC90 had a crappie GM transmission. All other Volvos use Aisin transmissions. Aisin is owned by Toyota, and makes all the transmissions for Toyota/Lexus. The -2003-2004-2005-2006- 2.5T XC90 had an Aisin 5-speed, and is pretty much bullet prove from an engine-transmission perspective. And my 2006 2.5T AWD XC90 has had none of the other problems you've posted. In fact, it hasn't had a repair in over 4-years.
Royale with cheese I actually knew someone who had an 04 T6 XC90 with 430,000 kilometres on theirs, the 4 speed tranny had 240K on it and was still working fine. I'm tempted to buy an 05 T6 actually... except the one I'm looking at has all the records for everything replaced, including all the front end parts and tranny.
I love volvo i have two s60. But the xc90 t6 with auto trans from gm is the wrong choice. Transmission breaks every 70k, without towing. Search the 2.5 with 5 cylinders. Besides it is a really nice car. The dashboard and the clima control looks the same as my s60. Easy car do maintenace (oil changes, filters, spaks, coils or even timing belt who takes only 2 hours to do and you need to remove the from passanger wheel)
I have the same year Volvo and the original transmission broke at 109k. Luckily, I had it under extended warranty and Volvo was nice enough to pick up the tab of the tranmission and replace the GM transmission with a Volvo transmission. They also replaced some other parts as well. At 134k, it is still going strong and I love it!
My 2003 t6 trans died while driving up a hill went into neutral with 118k 😔.I've been carless for 3 weeks and I'm in college. Waiting for my new trans in it hopefully everything goes we'll I hope it doesn't drive weird after the new trans
I just bought one of the model yesterday used. It is a 2004 with a five cylinder.Anyone have any suggestions of what I should watch on it? I have had a 740GLE and long back a 1981 265 Diesel. I learned that Volvo has some quirks in each model, but they are not fatal to the car normally.
@Nebraskahusker23 The transmission's just incredibly weak and usually requires replacement after 50-100k miles. They are absolutely dreadful transmissions.
Question for everyone, I'm buying a 2004 XC90 T6 AWD for $500 with 113K miles, it's in great condition and with one problem, the Transmission is gone, body/wheel/interior is good, is it worth fixing and if so where can I get my transmission from?
@perfoodleschnitz That's what the dealership's told her. She's at somewhere around 93k miles on it and to just have the transmission checked is a few hundred dollars. If her transmission doesn't go out in the next 7k miles we'll have to pay for it ourselves if it ever does.
The V8 also has issues, with both engine and transmission. Just not as common as the T6. And there is no T5, it's a 2.5T which has 209Hp and the T5 would have 250-260Hp depending on year. No T5 was offered in the XC90.
@LoveTheCity123 I own the XC-90 and absolutely love it, and like the other person said, I wouldn't come ANYWHERE near the T6 with the GM tranny. I own the inline 5 because it is the quintisenntial Volvo motor, and it has the Aisen Warner 5-speed. Anybody who thinks we are wrong can head over to Edmunds car reviews and read the HUNDREDS of complaints and proposed class action suits on the T6.
2,9? last i checked these Engines where either 2,5 or 3,0 L. or i might remembering something wrong... They're quite old too, they debuted in 1990 in the luxury version of the 900, the 960. which later got a big facelift in 1997 and the series was renamed the S90 and V90 at the same time when the 850 became the S70 and V70, BUT maybe just a year and a half later the entire series was scrapped and replaced by the S80. and gotten to become some sort of a modern collectable among Volvo fanatic's.
This car is very nice, I drove on of my friends XC90s but it feels like it is slow accelerating, and has anyone else noticed the wood on the steering wheel doesn't match the cars wood trim?
The styling of these cars have held up very well over the years. The 2014 model still looks the same as this 2004, but Volvos finally redesigning it for 2015. I noticed all of the engines this SUV offered over the years are underpowered except for the V8, which they dropped a couple of years ago. Now the only engine left is the underpowered 3.2 Inline 6.
Well it depends on the options that it comes with, for example I have a 2007 Volvo XC90 with the base speaker system and they do not have it while my other 2011 xc90 WITH the upgraded dynaudio has an Auxiliary port.
All of the T6 models were junk....it has a GM 4spd auto and every single one fails prematurely. T6 was a nightmare. Before 2007 please I beg you buy the 5cyl. After 2007 things are much better with the 3.2 Not perfect. But much better
joegolden481 true, but I had a friend who had a 2004 XC90 T6 and the transmission didn't fail until 280,000 kilometres and they still own the same car and it now has 422,000 kilometres on it, and the second trans has 142,000 and seems to be doing well, but since we have an XC70 with the 2.5T it has 356,000 kilometres and runs really nice!
Also there doesn't look like there is much space in the 2nd row seats for adults, at least I don't think I would want to go on a long trip back there Kyle looked kind of cramped back there.
@accord1986lxi It uses a GM sourced 4-speed automatic. And it's not a "Ford product". It was built under Ford's ownership, but it's not a Ford product. It's all Volvo.

Definitely my favorite Volvo. Awesome SUV.
Volvo makes really stylish SUVs and they are really comfortable and nice looking on the inside.

volvo seats are amazingly comfortable. better than any cadillac or lincoln or bentley ive ever been in
Very safe and comfortable cars, but rampant with transmission problems on the T6
