I’ve just started attending water colour classes, and I’ll be honest I get a much better feel of putting the colours down when watching you. Thank you so much.
Hi Grace, It’s great that you’re getting into Water and going to classes. There are so many different ways to teach Watercolour. I like the idea of keeping it simple and not to over complicate things. The feel you mentioned important, which I think is painting with a happy brush. Keep practising! Best wishes, James
just watched this for the 3rd time (my favorite) and i learn something new every time.still working on my ‘more looking and less putting’ JP aphorism 😄
Hi Wendy, Glad you like this video so much and that it keeps on giving! The painting is sitting in my lounge, framed, leaning against the wall and I do enjoy looking at it. It has a nice quality to it. I hope your painting is going well. Best wishes, James
Hi John , One of the interesting things about Watercolour painting is that it has such a nice name but underneath the name there’s a lot of tension. Hope your painting is going well! Best wishes, James
Hi Trevor, Glad you enjoyed the video and the painting. I’m not sure it’s really ever easy to do, there’s always tension when painting with Watercolour . One quote I like is Watercolour is making an emergency out of a catastrophe. That sort of sums it up.😊 Thanks for watching, Best wishes, James
Hi Cheryl, I do enjoy a looser style of painting and for the eye to sort of work it out a bit, I think it makes it more fun that way. Glad you enjoyed the process. Best wishes, James
Great vlog lovely picture I like the use of selected lamp black now I know how to put atmosphere into a picture on a grey day.! The bridge is outstanding and looks it - thanks for travel details I feel I’ve been on holiday.
Hi Robert, Glad you enjoyed the picture so much. It was a lovely scene. I don’t often use black, it is an underrated colour. Happy that you feel like you’ve been in a holiday! Best wishes, James
I enjoyed watching you paint this James. I admire your dexterity with paint and brush…years of practice I guess. Looking forward to more of Scotland. Cheers.
Hi Noel, Glad you enjoyed the painting and watching the process develop. Scotland is so great, so I will be doing lots more of it in the future. Best wishes, James
I’m not too sure if this sky really worked on this occasion, but in general I love your work. Love your videos, I wish you well and hope you will continue. Thank you
Hi William, It was an interesting sky. I liked it myself and I quite enjoy different way of painting it. Don’t worry, I’ll still be continuing with my videos. I’ve got lots planned. Best wishes, James
Thank James, I see what you mean by it being easier to paint out of doors rather than using multiple references in the studio,as you did here. One interesting thing I noted nothing to do with the painting, you have marked off your hardboard frame into halves and third segments, which I guess is usefull when scaling up your sketch onto the larger piece of paper.
Hi Martyn, It definitely seems to be a simpler process painting out doors. Everything seems right and you don’t have to interpret things. Well, noticed about the marks on the board. I use them when I’m in the studio not for outdoors. Just makes it a little bit easier and quicker. Best wishes, James
Hi Kalaysia , Glad you enjoyed the video. There’s always a bit of tension in trying something a bit new but I did enjoy the more moody sky. Hope your painting is going well. Best wishes, James
When I come to Scotland one day, I’m going to want to paint with you! I completely overdo my paintings and am trying to embrace the less is more Potter method.
Hi Dori, It’s a very difficult thing not to overdo Watercolour , keeping it simple is the way ahead. You’re more than welcome to paint with me if you get to Scotland. Best wishes, James
I was not sure I liked the pole but it all looks great after you framed it :) Looking forward to your travels and next painting, thanks for sharing! Sandy, Raleigh NC
Hi Sandy, Glad you like the framed picture. For me, the pole made the painting and gave it a real sense of three dimensions. Our next part of our Skye trip is out on Thursday. Best wishes, James
Thank you for sharing your process with us. It’s so helpful. This scene is exquisite and you have captured it brilliantly. Your brushstrokes have a Cezanne touch.
Hi, glad it was helpful to you. It really was a beautiful scene, well worth painting. Scotland is such a beautiful place and there are so many opportunities to paint here. A great compliment been compared to Cezanne 🎉 Thanks for watching. Best wishes, James
I love your style of painting! I'm a recently retired graphic designer and I'm just starting out with watercolor. I tend to get too caught up in the details and so your videos inspire me.
Hi Mary, I’m so pleased that you like the style of painting, it is so rewarding. Detail is quite a difficult thing to get out of, but I think the main trick is to simplify and keep it simple. Looking forward to hearing how your paintings develop. Best wishes, James
Hi Bailey, Glad you like the painting. I agree the sky really adds to the drama in it. It makes it look like there’s a tunnel of light coming in. Best wishes, James
Simply Stunning James. The bridge really comes a life in the painting. It's roughly painted with some very beautiful colors. Looking forward to more paintings of the you made.
Fabulous loved watching this all come together stroke by stroke and what a difference a frame makes to the presentation. Thank you both for your hard work.Looking forward to the next part of your journey.
Hi Jim, Glad you’re enjoying the videos. I agree it is amazing how a painting looks so good when it’s framed. The next part of our Skye trip is out on Thursday. I hope you enjoy it. Best wishes, James
Hi James, thanks for sharing your sketching technique, I noticed your pencil looked like a biro? I like the idea of omitting the modern road bridge to enhance the old bridge. Also the idea of composing a quick sketch then painting it back home in the studio. I also enjoyed seeing the scenery of Scotland, open and beautiful. I have never been around there but I hope to experience it myself. Cheers Steve
Hi Steve, Yes, I like using a biro for drawing. It gives such a good line and best of all it doesn’t smudge unlike pencil. The new bridge wasn’t that good so restoring the scene to how it was was interesting. Scotland is such a great place for painting. I hope you manage a trip up here. Best wishes, James
Thank you James for sharing your skills and Tanya for being part of your team..Again I enjoyed watching you construct your painting, its so rewarding, informative and creative in a short frame of real time. You must have many many framed pictures in your house, where do you keep them all? Cheers Steve
Hi Steve, Glad you enjoyed the demonstration and tutorial. I do have a fair number of Frames pictures lying around the house. Luckily, I do sell a few as well. Best wishes, James
Hi Carlos, It really was a beautiful place, and I’m glad you think I made a good go at it. I Hope life is going well for you in Portugal. Best wishes, James
Lovely and inspirational. This is the way I normally paint (from a photo) but I am much too fussy and don’t know when to stop. When you frame your water colour do you use glass and if so do you get it cut to size when you buy it or cut it yourself ? Something I have been exploring, doing my own framing. Thank you for another great video.
Hi Mike, It is a very effective way to paint, but it can make things more complicated painting from photos. It does sound easier to do but it always seems to take three times as long. I buy my glass in sheets and then I cut it down to the correct size. It’s really not that difficult to do and well worth investing in the tools. Glad you enjoyed the video. Best wishes, James
Hi, glad you enjoyed the painting The paper I use is Fabriano Artistico 140lb not. It’s the natural white colour. I hope you can get hold of it Best wishes, James

Great fun to watch the entire process from sketching the bridge in the countryside to painting in the studio. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed that!
It was a beautiful place and I really enjoyed the finished painting
Thanks for watching.

Beautiful painting, hoping to visit Skye next year.
Hi Sylvia,
That sounds like a great idea! It’s a wonderful place.

You make it look so deceptively easy, how all the marks come together to make a cohesive whole, stunning.
Hi Trevor,
Glad you enjoyed the video and the painting.

Love watching you paint. It’s loose. It’s abstract. Then it all comes together beautifully.

I do enjoy a looser style of painting and for the eye to sort of work it out a bit, I think it makes it more fun that way.
Glad you enjoyed the process.

Thank you, James ...and Tanya. It's a lovely work and I enjoyed your process...... very scary putting in that sky😅 but the result is very effective.

Reminds me of Cezanne.
Hi Raymond,
That’s a compliment, Cezanne did some interesting watercolours.
Many thanks, James
Lovely!
Glad you like it.
Thanks for the comment.

Fantastic!
