Actually, he does have visual aids to help guide him on where to point or gesture. That's what the monitors on either side of the green screen facing him are for.
That's exactly what I was thinking!
Weatherpeople have screens facing them showing the digital overlay in real time, but they're very good at making it look like they can see and interact with the blank screen behind them.

This guy did very well with the joke. I could see the persons interactions without the camera showing the person being there. The little 'glitches' give it away. I wish more fun stuff like this would happen in news broadcasts.

For a moment, I'm baffled as how could we see through that weather guy when he's putting that prankster's hand over him. Then I realized that the background screen is a green screen too.
I never know that the background displaying weather reports is a green screen.
modern studios use really large touch screens, so they can interact with the display without relying on someone else. But that wasn't feasible until the last decade or so.
