- If I turn into my parents, I'd be okay with that!;)
I asked my parents to show me around their boat, a Formosa 51', which they reluctantly stepped in front of the camera for. Even I learned some neat upgrade ideas!
Boat details:
1973 Formosa 51'

My parents bought Solskin 15 years ago. She was rotten, had oysters growing in her salt water pump, mushrooms growing in the woodwork, and was pretty much sinking. They spent 3 years restoring her and my family has since cruised to Mexico, circumnavigated Vancouver Island a few times, and my parents have since taken her to Haida Gwaii, Great Bear Rainforest, and have plans to take her to Alaska.
My parents are professionals and have lived aboard for 2 years now. Ask questions about the boat and I'll force my parents to answer!
Enjoy!
Wonderful to see Sölskin so lovingly restored. She was my brother Dan’s boat when he started Bluewater Adventures in 1974. I spent many days sailing and nights sleeping on her, and hours working on her. I am happy to see the leaking teak decks and wood masts go and all the woodwork so beautifully restored. You have given me something to smile about.
Hi Ron, that is high praise. Thank you. We enjoy seeing your brother's plaque at Jedidiah and our proud to know that our sailboat is linked to his legacy. We have also come across Bluewater Adventure boats a few times and enjoyed being hailed by one of the captain's who also remembers his time on Solskin. We love the long lasting link to our beautiful coast. Smiling back with you. Christine
I love them Formosa Boats,I truly do.
Sailed on Solskin between Comox and Bowen Island in the 1982/83 timeframe. Beautiful boat. She was written up in Beautiful British Columbia around the same time.
A dream boat for many until they own one and realize the herculean work and colossal cost of maintenance and mooring. however if this be you then jump on fearlessly and take to the seven seas in this beautiful stout pirate ship.
🇨🇦 wow b e a utiful !!!! My Dad bought 1977 Atlantic Clipper 41 also from Formosa Boat Works and took 4 kids and our Mom sailing for a year to the Bahamas from Toronto in 1977/78 - I turned 16 that year -one of my best years ever !!!!
Awesome! Such a formative time!
Great Video. I will own a Formosa 51 one day
Beautiful boat and nice work on the resto!! We just bought a Formosa 56 ketch, will be starting a refit soon, hopefully posting on yt....
Beautiful boat! Just saw a sister ship in Croatia along the coast during a drive 2 days ago and it has me going down the rabbit hole of Formosa ketches :)
They seem to be very popular over in Croatia, most of the ones I’ve seen for sale are there.
Beautiful boat
Lovely to revisit and see all your changes. I used to cook and freeze meals for Bluewater Adventures and have fond memories of that time.
Beautiful boat. Solskin = solskinn (norwegian)=Sunshine
I love this boat just looking for the same boat now, you have done a wonderful job, and your dads work looks awesome!!
nice couple and boat
What a beautiful Ketch, been wanting a boat like her for damn near a decade now. Looks like they keep her in great shape!
CaptainRonRico yes they are pretty meticulous! She’s a beauty, but a lot of work that’s for sure haha
Such an awesome tour - thank you guys! Very much enjoyed seeing all the TLC you’ve invested in her.
Thanks so much for watching! Glad you enjoyed it:)
Beautiful morning, Cheers🍻
amazing boat, ty
You seem like lovely people. I want to follow your journeys.
Wow, what a beautiful restoration.
Your hard work, dedication and attention for detail shows.
Would love to see what it looked like before all the hard work.
mm California I will have to ask my parents to pull up some old photos. Thanks for watching
Very impressed,enjoyed
i think i found the boat i whant!
I'd like a Formosa 51 with Windows on the transom and junk rigged. Then I'd de a pirate.
What a great boat. My partner and I have been looking at these for some time now. I see these up for sale on and off but most require a lot of work. Would be great if your could give us a rough idea of what the major costs have been. The rigging for example as most still carry the original wooden masts. Thanks :)
Daniel Albon the costs of the refit were over many years, but the major ones like masts and standing rigging was about $25,000 cad in 2006. New sails, chainplates, winches, rigging, masts were about $100k cad. My parents did the majority of the work themselves, but there’s no getting away from the costs of new gear! Thanks for watching !
is that the same kind of boat of make that was in the movie captain ron. kind of looks like it some what
castlev1986 yes it is! And in Adam Sandler’s 50 first dates
@@AllAboutSpray the captain ron boat is the best boat other than black beards
She is a beauty :) Is she still for sale?
she isn't for sale anymore, they had it up a few years ago, but are now living aboard. I don't think they plan on selling anytime soon!
Gábor Molnár I guess I was wrong and they are thinking of selling her. If you’re interested you can email solskin51@hotmail.com
