Eating 28 Year Old US MRE 1988 MRE Corned Beef Hash Vintage Meal Ready to Eat Taste Test Review

- Eating an entire classic 28 year old US MRE. Check out how well this one held up - it's a mini food miracle! Shows how well this awesome US Military Ration relic of a menu has held up.
They certainly don't make 'em like they used to! It's all about storage conditions. An MRE is a terrible thing to waste.
Warning: Don't try this at home. Yours might not have held up so well.

I honestly don't know who is braver. Me for joining the Army 32 years ago and eating these MRE's, or Steve for eating these MRE's 30 years later.
Steve is more brave, no question about it. He ate 100 year old rations. This was child's play for him
Nice.
I joined the Army in 1985. I always liked the MREs. We would be out in the field and a lot of the guys would bring their own food because they said they didn’t like “Marie’s cooking”. I usually came back with a duffel bag full of them. I would bring them home eat them occasionally. There were a few menus that even my wife liked. I’ll still pick some up every now and then. Love them! Thanks, Steve!
Steve. He drank the black lemonade from World War 2. Thank you for your service.

This is the only vintage MRE I ever had. It was exactly this menu. I had a friend who had been in the air force and he had saved a few that he had gotten at some point. They were on a shelf in his dads garage. Had been there for 10 years or so and I asked him if I could have one. He said sure and I took it home.. more out of curiosity than anything. But when I opened it it was perfectly fine and I ended up eating most of eveything in it. I definitely remember the oatmeal bar and the apple jelly which I put on the crackers. Now all this time later I'm watching Steve open another one. Nice!

I was a brand new infantry E-2 Private in '92 at JOTC Panama. I ate this meal almost every day for a month because everyone else in my squad hated it and I always got last dibs when rations were resupplied. So, when we were in the field, becoming a "hashivore" was a necessary survival adaptation to my jungle environment. We had the little bottles of Tabasco in the accessory pack that I'd always add to it, and the sweat would drip off of my nose into it as I ate, sitting flopped against my rucksack, usually in the mud. But my mouth still waters watching the video, and I would totally eat that right now.
A "hashivore". LOL Thanks for that.
rickb1973 How would you usually heat it up?
Goat, we didn't have the chemical heaters yet, I think we got those about a year later. I usually ate it cold....well, not really cold, at ambient Panamanian jungle temperatures.
Thanks for your service brother! I remember when I was in saudi during the war we would throw our MREs on the tarmac and the sun would heat them up for us.. Some great meals back in those days.
Thank you for your service, and your hashivore story. Had a good laugh. Take care sir.

As I sat in the field, covered in sweat and grime, having not showered for a week in the Carolina heat, cursing the gods at having to eat yet one more god-awful, bland, constipating bag of freeze-dried, vacuum packed, horror show “food,” that 30 years later I’d be staring at a tiny handheld phone/computer, watching some dude eating the same thing saying things like “Nice. Wow, I love that malted barley smell.” As the Grateful Dead said “What a long strange trip it’s been!” Love the reviews Steve. Rock on! USMC 1986-1990

how safe its expired man!

@@ekhliousful expired dosent mean that the food has turned into poison lol it just mean that the food no longer hold the properties that its manufacturers promised to the customers. like flavour texture or nutritional value etc. if there is no microbactrial action took place inside the food most of the expired foods are safe to eat.

Another glorious MRE video and in my favorite variety, nice!
Right on, Everythingisdull! This was the best era of MRE's! (1988-1993 were my favorites).
we got pallets of 1988-1993 mre's when we got deployed in 2001, when the new production one's showed up we didnt even open them and stuck with the old dark brown bags.
I was a US Marine infantryman in 1988 and I love the hash menu! Steve you should add water, creamer and sugar to the freeze dried fruit it taste incredible! Semper Fi till i die!
I learned from experience that if you could warm up the corned beef hash then it tasted good. The warmer the better. Hot corned beef hash tasted better than warm corned beef hash which was superior to cold corned beef hash. Adding Tabasco sauce made the corned beef hash even tastier. The corned beef hash entrée predated the issuance of the new-fangled, disposable chemical heating pouches. Had those been available earlier, the corned beef hash might have had a better reputation and greater acceptance. Once on a field exercise I passed by a decrepit, broken-down wood shack. On the floor lay about six to eight discarded mres, all corned beef hash entrees. The mres were in unopened, very good condition, meaning it had been rejected and discarded not that long ago. I collected up all of those discarded corn beef hash mres.

Oh hey I live in Anchorage Alaska. Good to see we are still repping
I still can't discern exactly why, but I can sit down; watch you unpack and eat shelf-stable food for hours and hours instead of being productive.
Hey, I think that is productive in it's own way. I think? Ah, I dunno what I'm talking about. :)
This was my absolute favorite MRE when I was in the field. Didn't this come with a tiny bottle of Tabasco sauce? Mine always had the tiny bottle that I used in my hash. Where is the liquid heating phosphorus bag? I loved the little heating pouch, it made me feel like I was doing a science project every time we sat down to eat. Hospital Corps School - Fleet Marine Force - 1994
The Tabasco came out around 91 or so? The heaters came out a bit after that, if I remember correctly. I was in from 86-93...it's been a while! Lol
Watching some of steve's old videos lately. They age well. Anyway, I followed the link above to his little fan's MRE review. She did a fantastic job!
