Thankfully they updated the entrees before Saudi/Iraq. I had the original 'dirty dozen' in basic at Ft. Dix, but by the time we got sent to Saudi Arabia they'd gotten rid of the worst offenders and you could make some decent meals out of the newer ones.

Blasting those pouches with radiation is actually one of the reasons why they last so long. You wanna kill every single of those microscopic motherfuckers that may still be hiding in those hermetically sealed pouches, and a healthy dose of X-rays or gamma rays will do the job.
Just took a road trip from Minnesota to Arizona for a two week vacation. I brought along MRE's to eat at hotels along to save some money instead of dining out. My neighbour gave me one of those when I was a kid. I believe he was in the Marines. The only things I can remember about it was the main pouch had some kind of tomato sauce in it, and then the matches, which I just gave to my mom because I was a good boy. I guess that must have been about 1987.

Steve, that brings back my best cold war childhood memories! In 1986, when I was seven years old there was an US ADA-unit here in my village in Germany during the REFORGER-Exercise. We children played and had fun with the american soldiers and were allowed to stay with them in the field kitchen. They gave us exactly this type of MRE and also boxes of grape jelly, peanut butter, cocoa and grape baverage powder and cyalume chem lights. Boy, we were so proud and happy! Seeing that video brings back the sweet smell and taste of the cocoa, of this delicious fruit mix and especially that amazing cherry nut cake! It is as it was yesterday. And from that time for us kids the United States tasted like grape jelly on peanut butter, warm cocoa, grape drinks and with these chem lights we felt like yedi knights from star wars! And still today, when I have the opportunity to buy it, then I get some Cool Aid Grape to bring back these memories! Thank you very much for that video!
I was there in Germany from 86-89! Some of the best times of my life happened while I was stationed there in Friedburg! The German people were great! I'm glad that you have good memories of those times as well! I was in a tank unit and it always pained me to see some of the damage as we passed through towns on Reforger, and other field exercises!
I love the old 80's technology and or traing video sounding music. Makes me also remember being a kid and first hearing and loving music like that from the 80's early 90's.

wait till Davie504 challenges him to eat a 40 year old bass
I'm always amazed how long (and well) food will last by preventing air from touching it. Remarkable.
"Im so grateful to eat something normal... after all this time"
Huge MonkaS
This man opens MREs like a kid opens Christmas presents. I'll never get tired of watching these reviews.
You know Steve, something has always surprised me about your channel. I've been here since around the 200k mark, and I've steadily watched your channel boom, plateau, boom, plateau, and now it is at a steady incline, and I'm amazed... you're headed towards 2mil. All because your personality is... nice! You don't rely on the stupid oversaturated "WHHHHHHHATS GOIN' ON EVERYBODY" and "PLZ LIKE COMMENT SUBSCRIBE" rhetoric regurgitated by every RUclipsr out there. You're just chill, and it's a fun channel to watch. I'm not even into MREs, I've never eaten one EVER before in my life, I'm obviously not in the military nor have any desire to be, yet I've been here for years.
Hope you’re having a NICE Monday, Steve.
Who else watches these while eating, so it’s like ur having a dinner with the legend Steve
If I don't it always makes me hungry.
no doubt i just tried a Wise company mre and i'd trade him in a heart beat
Having dinner right now! Nice to know I'm not the only one.
Lol I’m at uni so I watch these instead of eating dinner
Every single time
This exact beef stew menu was the very first MRE I had in basic training in early 1985! I have been an MRE fan ever since and keep a minimum of 10 cases of MREs on hand at home. Keep up the awesome work Steve and I always look forward to your content!
I nominate steve for the congressional medal of honor due to his bravery in the face of extreme peril
"This is one of the greatest meals I've ever had. I'm never gunna forget this."
it makes me happy knowing that we get to share this special moment with you, steve. Love the videos!
You always include a nice little history lesson with your tastings. It is really impressive how much you know about this subject, and how much you like your job. And that enthusiasm clearly spreads to your fan base, of which I am a very happy member. Keep it up Steve. You are my MRE Hearo.
Nice little hiss-tory lesson :)
oh gosh I do love that dried fruit. It's such a fun snack with how crunchy but flavorful it is
They need to bring it back
@@Steve1989MRE oh that would be the best. They always phase out good stuff, like cocoa beverage powder, or cherry beverage base.
Not sure why but I'm dying to try one of those. Can imagine they taste amazing and have a really interesting texture. I'm seriously considering hunting down an mre with it just to satisfy my curiosity!
@@Steve1989MRE hey Steve, how's about a vid on your training programme, you got some guns my freind.
Whenever i got the freeze dried peaches, I'd used the creamer from accessory packet, add it to & a bit of water to the peaches for peaches and cream treat!
How to break the internet:
Steve1989MREinfo goes on hot ones🔥 nice!
Or the sauce
Ghost pepper wings? “Nice kick to them”
I seriously think Steve would make an awesome food critic. He is so suited to it the way he describes every component of the food.
This was the version of the MREs that I was eating in Germany, the NTC, Ft. Bliss, and Saudi/Iraq. Memories!
Thankfully they updated the entrees before Saudi/Iraq. I had the original 'dirty dozen' in basic at Ft. Dix, but by the time we got sent to Saudi Arabia they'd gotten rid of the worst offenders and you could make some decent meals out of the newer ones.
Howdy, from El Paso.
@@desertdog3684 Howdy back! I'm in Tucson now, but there are at least a couple of my buddies from 3d ACR who are still living in El Paso ! 😃
I look forward to every episode, it's like a history lesson and a food show all in one!
learn more here than our history lession.
its soo cool how this guy enjoys this hobby soo much, and even better, share that joy with us
The legend is back with another one!
Nice.
I like cabbages
....or two.
Nice
@@walkingglasses6264 Nice.
Steve, every morning I have a packet of powdered cocoa, a teaspoon of sugar, a tablespoon of instant coffee, and a splash of milk for my breakfast. I have adapted your Army Mochaccino for my everyday use, have been doing this for over a year now.
Thanks for all you do!
I love Army Mochaccino, too! I make it all the time, and thinking of Steve makes it extra fun.
Sounds like the diabeetus
"a beautifully irradiated masterpiece"
Words to live by folks, words to live by... xD
That freeze dried fruit reminds me when my dad would bring home "Astronaut Icecream". Just freeze dried icecream. I miss that. Thanks for another awesome video!
Space Food Sticks, Tang & Freeze Dried NASA ice cream!
I remember having this meal as a kid in 87' when my dad brought it home, was awesome! Even though I didn't eat the lima beans. 😜😜
My favorite thing about
Steve’s videos is when he says, “Let’s put it out on a tray.” Then that classic, “Nice!” My favorite content creator by far.
I watched this 50 minutes after uploaded. It already had 1.4k likes; that's one like every 2.14 seconds. I love this guy.
Steve is the reason my roommate and I started buying rations and eating them for fun. Even got an old Vietnam accessory packet with smokes. Only for display of course.
As kids we smoked cigarettes out of old Korean and Vietnam ration.
Steve doesn’t need to beg for shares or ask for subscribers, he could grow through word of mouth alone, I know I’ve put at least 7 of my friends onto this channel and they’ve all come back and expressed their love for his content. Pure, honest, educational and truly passionate about the subject, whether as a sleep aid or something to throw on when chilling with friends - Steve has the video for you. Or the line, I know I quote him on the regular. Thank you Steve, you’re the GOAT.
Eats a 35 year old meal : " I'm glad I'm finally able to eat something normal"
Steve, you're a treasure.
Kindergarten teacher - "Would you like some milk before naptime?"
Steve Jnr - "No thanks (pulls out tin canteen, esbit stove, packets of cocoa beverage & coffee type-2) Water's fine"
No but do you have coffee instant type 3?
Nice.
I had the same MRE (37 years old) and it was still fine, the cocoa and the peanut butter had that old library book smell and taste but both were still enjoyable. The coffee was fine aswell as the cherry nut cake and the freeze dried peaches. Main was actually perfectly fine!
I recall when a friend in the National Guard shared an MRE with us in our college dorm in 1987. He made us the hot chocolate + coffee creamer icing for the fruitcake. I liked the freeze dried fruit.
Another one I remember eating back in Desert Storm. Added hot sauce for extra flavor.
When I was in the US Army back in 1966, this was my favorite MRE. The peanut butter was better then also.
“Ya know? Life’s not complete without a little **slap** army mocaccino”
No one can make "beautifully irradiated retort pouch" as sexy sounding as Steve.
Yessssss
Blasting those pouches with radiation is actually one of the reasons why they last so long. You wanna kill every single of those microscopic motherfuckers that may still be hiding in those hermetically sealed pouches, and a healthy dose of X-rays or gamma rays will do the job.
Just took a road trip from Minnesota to Arizona for a two week vacation. I brought along MRE's to eat at hotels along to save some money instead of dining out. They were recent ones, not the vintage stuff Steve enjoys. But every time I broke open the package all Could think about was Steve and his wisdom. I always like his videos and I get excited whenever I get and alert that he is posting something new. Thank you Steve1989MREinfo.
The Donald Sutherland of MRE Reviews, enjoying a finely preserved Vintage MRE. Nice!
omg he looks like him I never noticed
Steve's girlfriend trying to hide a fart...
Steve - "That's a nice little hiss"
😂😂😂😂😭💀 this had me laughing to hard and I woke up my cat 🐈
"That smells perfectly fine. It smells fresh." Steve 2020
Cursed comment
Best comment so far lol
Lol!!!!
im so additcted to steve opening these rashen's and explaing the back story
My neighbour gave me one of those when I was a kid. I believe he was in the Marines. The only things I can remember about it was the main pouch had some kind of tomato sauce in it, and then the matches, which I just gave to my mom because I was a good boy. I guess that must have been about 1987.
Find you somebody who treasures you as much as Steve treasures a 35 year old well preserved MRE.
Seeing Steve get stoked about his passion is truly inspiring. Keep it up you mad lad
Sept 1, 1985. I was in high school. The Titanic was found.
I was in 3rd grade, and the U.S.S. Challenger was 4 months, 27 days away from it's tragic final flight.
I was tiny and in six short years the Berlin wall fell.
I was in my Sr year playing college football.
Holy shit it took until 1985 to find the titanic? The ocean is fucking huge.
I was in Saudi Arabia eating the same 1st Gen MREs that had been sitting on an MPS ship for several years. We were thrilled when they ran out and we started getting the 2nd Gens (with the brown spoon).
I feel like a grandma that just wants to feed this man all the mre’s, lol. Always fun to watch these
This Ration is almost Exactly my age! Born 18 days after me.
Born a few weeks before me
**debates not going there...**
**decides to anyways, against his better judgement**
**concludes it best not be said after all...**
Alls I'll say, it involved the terms "after" and "birth" 🥴 (I'm still going to hell for this lmao)
So glad to see you reviwing a MRE again. I was afraid the weather gotcha
Thanks for sharing that, and very glad to know MRE's can hold up that long! I miss the nut cakes, I don't understand why people didn't like them. Beef Stew and Spaghetti were the best.
“ enjoy every morsel, just like life, enjoy every second of it”
Steve has it figured out, and im just hoping i can do the same.
"...Such as in life... Enjoy every bit of it." What a wonderfully positive attitude. And you know he means it. Brilliant.

Kinda hot, no homo

He’s so buff
I'll never forget the first MRE I ever had was when I went camping with my dad and brother. It came in a white and green box instead of the basic brown box, but I had this menu and seeing the dark brown wrappers bring me back a little.
