Song by James McMurtry
LYRICS
Aunt Clara kept her Bible right next to the phone
In case she needed a quote while she talked to someone
In my memory she smiles while the blessing is said
And visions of freeze tag dance in my head
She says I’ll grow up big if I eat all my roast
I’ll still believe in heaven, but I won’t believe in ghosts anymore
I’ll put away childish things
I’ll put away childish things
Every other weekend, age o' thirteen
With my fishing pole and my Field and Stream
Ridin' back home on the Trailways bus
I looked out the window ’til I saw too much
And I called my parents by their own first names
I played in the alley, but I didn’t play the game anymore
I’ll put away childish things
I’ll put away childish things
The wolves howl all night long
They won’t stop and they won’t go home
Beneath my window they run
Probably it’ll be alright
If I keep it all locked up tight
And wait ‘til daylight comes
Now my boy goes like a house on fire
He’ll never burn out and he’ll never retire
And I remember when I used to think like that
When I was young and the world was flat
But I’m forty-some years old now and man, I don’t care
All I want now is just a comfortable chair
And to sell all my stock and live on the coast
I don’t believe in heaven, but I still believe in ghosts
I’ve put away childish things
I’ve put away childish things
I’ve put away childish things
I’ve put away childish things - Видеоклипы
I love how this arrangement with a full band reveals Sarah's more ROCKING side to her talent. She can do no wrong.
Wrong, no. Better, yes. Words fail; see my comment above. She is not comfy here, and I feel it and hear it. She'll grow into it.
@@dsm5d723 I respectfully disagree. I think she appears perfectly comfortable playing rocking tunes like this.
@@guyfaulkes3035 Opinion. Only she could tell us. Her own slower and more contemplative stuff feels like her reflex. Still so much more to grow into, like anything. Maybe I feel like it is a spread too thin in a well worn direction, that I do acknowledge.
She can do no wrong is an understatement - stellar! McMurtry must be proud.
@@sjw999sjw McMurtry loved it. He had her introduce him at the recent awards show where he played "Canola Fields". 😉
One my favorites covering one of my all time favorites! James McMurtry is way too unsung!
He definitely got ahold of his dad's talents for writing and took it too new heights !
Leventhal!
John Leventhal and his guitar playing are both so elegant!
Sounding great Sarah.
he is my now guitar hero
Great hybrid pickin’ solo! Love that Tele sound
That Tele’s on steroids! Note the pickups and what appears to be jumbo frets. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!
Yeah! John Leventhal!
looks like Bill Nighy
the girl is simply amazing....
That has to be one of the best songs I've heard. The guitar solo is just incredible, the harmony as sweet as harmony can get and Sarah belting it out to perfect time has me in raptures. And then I listened to "Blue Heron" and it sends me to another corner of my heart I didn't know I had.
Of course, because it's America hardly anyone knows who she is. And they're missing out 'cos she is just fabulous!✌
I know!! I saw her on ACL in 2010, she was 18 and I was blown away. Have you heard her new duet with David Crosby? He asked her to be on the song... For Free by Joni ..
Totally agree about the guitar solo, it's incredible. He manages to tell a whole story with it. Sarah attracts major talent to her music.
don't you believe it - I'm in the UK and my friends and I've been to see her play twice locally. And that won't be the last time. She is a monster talent. That Leventhal guy's pretty ace on the economically perfect Tele accompaniment too!
@williamcorden2121 I agree with you love this song Sarah Jarosz - Childish Things
James McMurtry!!!!
An underrated genius of a songwriter!
"I ate all my roast and all I want now is a comfortable chair" ... and put this golden tune on repeat all day.
Leventhal has become one steady producer for the likes of Shawn Colvin as well as his spouse Rosanne Cash.
Jarosz has covered this song before; her time in NYC & now Nashville haven't hurt her at all in the post-'Live From Here' months.
I am sure they had their reasons including loss of market share, but when American Public Media ended 'Live From Here', I was justifiably worried it might never come back.
Chris Thile is an awesome front man & with Sarah Jarosz, they were the rocks of 'Live From Here'; I was a huge fan of that & Prairie Home Companion going back to the dawn of man with Garrison Keilor.
If I had my way, I would singlehandedly fund & bring back 'Live From Here' all to watch Chris Thile & Sarah Jarosz & friends in their finest moments. I guess one has to have more than $3.89 in their pockets.
Dang it. I guess those days are toast.
Wow. I hadn’t heard that Live From Here was canceled. I figured that it was just on hold due to the pandemic. Bummer.
Hell of a loss - Brittany Haas on fiddle and her "Hawktail" band crew; Sarah's "I'm With Her" group, including Aoife O'Donovan, who worked with Chris T. on other projects. Impossible to replace - no other broad venue for Americana - wish it could be brought back post-pandemic.
Dang-Live from Here gone? a big loss.
I agree with you completely! Live From Here with Sarah and Chris and Aoife and Brittany etc. are some of my favorite musical moments ever!!!!!!!🎼🥺
@@CarlMattick yes !!! These people are the best and when Chris got this show they did so much with it❣️
WHY is John Leventhal living MY life. Stop Bogarting the awesome female talent, John! JK, I love the direction that he has nudged the folks he's worked with. Rosanne Cash's cover of World Party's, "All Come True" revealed a rocking side of Rosanne that I'd never heard. Kind of the same thing here with Sarah - but I have a feeling that Sarah has a hard edged vision that will someday blow us all away.
Yeah... more like this!
as a big James McMurtry fan i loved this dead set nailed it well done i listened to it many many times
I love James Mccmurtry. Such an amazing songwriter. This cover certainly does the song justice.Just great Sarah
One of my favorite McMurtry songs!
Oh HELL YEAH!!
Sara, is SOOOOO GOOOD!
Wow. Just Great.
I can hear James now ... "This is one of the Sarah Jarosz songs I wrote ..." 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Amazing cover, almost as good as the solo version Sarah did from home when the pandemic began. Thanks for posting it.
Excellent band taking Sarah to the next level with those clear vocals with the right intonations always perfectly in tune.
One of my favorite songs. They did it justice!
As a big fan of James McMurtry's songwriting, this hits the bullseye for me. Go Sarah Go!
Great version of a great song.
Saw this very excellent performance!!! I really love James McMurtry's writing. He's got a sardonic wit as well as a serious side. This is a super rocking version!!!! Thank you and the band for letting loose!!!!!
I keep coming back to watch this. Lost track of how many times.
Between this one, Paul Simons Kathys Song and Bob Dylan’s Ring them bells. ...I loose track too 😀
@@carolynpack9153 Her cover of I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For is pretty darned good too.
Same. Been on repeat, often.
She is amazing…i wish she played San Antonio….this is a killer lineup…I love her in this space... she could own this. This song exemplifies how she does it all. She can jam....
I know.. Born in Wimberley right down the road and nobody in SA knows who she is..... I LOVE Sarah! Gruene Hall or The Paramount Theater in Austin will be your best bet. Im sure she'll be in one of those venues in the next year. Her ACL taping come out in October.
She's coming to Gruene Hall , Friday, April 22!! 2 dates in Austin too. xox
Brilliant! A wonderful cover - Jarosz/McMurtry tough to beat that combination.
Great cover of a great song
Refreshing ,honest and rocking. Thank you Sarah and John
Rock n roll Sarah. I love it.
Wow!
Nailed it.
Nothing like a properly-driven tele doing tele things.
Performed like it was an original. Love it.
This video and song should be released as a single. This blew me away when I saw this last week.
A modern artist who can sing, play an instrument and play live. Things are looking up!
AND write her own songs, too!
Talk about a class act!! Very inspiring.
This young lady can really really sing
This is a wonderful performance. Sarah's singing is perfection.
dayumn girl, you got John Leventhal jammin' with you. You never fail to impress on every level. This song fits you well, as you seem to be an old soul ~
Excellent.
Great voice.
Reminds me of a young Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Get it Sarah,I like the new attire also.
May 2021 - life's starting up again: Sarah Jarosz is the tonic we all need.
This is a clinic on how a band should be! To me Sarah is main stream! Been a fan for many years!
Pure. Deep. Gorgeous. Perfect.
Your version is elevated to master chef status. Food for my ears.
Thank you for putting this on RUclips.
Amazing musicians! ❤️
This is a pleasant surprise! You sound terrific as always, and the folks there with you are likewise top-notch.
She is one my favorite singers...love her...
The show was FAB!!!
So good!!!
This one is Texas country-rock heaven !
Can Americana’s and NPR’s bluegrass sweetheart make a rock classic out of a beloved James McMurtry country song? Sarah is now 30 and this performance is a declaration, a statement she has grown from a multi Grammy artsy ingenue prodigy into a hot Texas woman rocker performing like she could open for Waylon Jennings. This hook filled stunner looks real good on her.
“The wolves howl all night long
They won't stop and they won't go home
Beneath my window they run
Probably it'll be alright
If I keep it all locked up tight And wait 'til daylight comes”
Grown into a "hot Texas woman rocker." Yes, she's that. And so much more than that. Wearing this one out; I have a feeling Waylon would've been cool opening for her . . .
Well, well. I didn’t think butter would melt in her lovely mouth. SJ, rocking it out with her stellar band! The first ‘World on the Screen’ gig was fantastic! Can’t wait for the second featuring the Blue Heron suite!
Excellent!
This song makes everybody happy in the house, the work goes easy and fast
So talented, this Sarah ! and so eclectic !
Love
Thanks Sarah, my toddler granddaughter loves this song so much she will strum along with her spoon or toothbrush make believe guitar while watching it. Grandpa diggin it as well.
Sarah is pure talent. Fantastic song also. James McMurtry his best song.
I'm with her and James!
This is such a great song! So glad you covered it.
God in the highest heavens, deer god, you are going to make it, dear Sarah Jarosz x
I love EVERYTHINGshesings.......tight band too!
roughly 20 of my 100 favorite songs of all time were written by james mcmurtry. and i probably like a million songs a whole freaking lot
His new album, as yet unreleased, is chock full of classics. Blackberry Winter and Canola Fields - but they all stand out. No one writes better songs than James. And his twelve-string work is unmatched.
@@rizdog2 Yeah! Blackberry Winter and If It Don’t Bleed are my most anticipated songs. Canola Fields was just released as a single and it’s amazing. You can hear all the songs from the new album on his livestreams.
@@ObvPhotography I listen to all of his live streams usually live. They are so good, and on a high def monitor you gain a new appreciation for exactly how fine a guitar player James is.
We could use more this!
Fantastic cover! Why don't more people know about this AMAZING songwriter!? James is a legend.
I caught her first Fresh grass performance sometime ago now and I knew she was going to be something very unique. I've watched her grow musically every which way possible and its truly fascinating to watch.
This cover has a great fresh feel to it... as if to say there is a lifetime of Sarah to come.
No doubt she will be one of the all time greatest artists of our time🙏
Great cover of a great song, thanks
I love this song. Got me following James McMurtry years ago. This one's going on my rotation!

Leventhal!!!!
Great song and a great performance.
Great stuff! I love the James McMurtry original, but this seems... even better!
Yes! I like that a lot!

Great song.....thanks for another
Sweet performance
Sarah, you, and John, and the band, nailed this James McMurtry! Carry on!
So good Love this one.
The smile on your face...young lady...
If you like this cover, search RUclips for another "Live from Home" cover Sarah Jarosz has of Childish Things. It is also exceedingly good.
I love Sarah. I have always loved John Leventhals guitar playing. What a great mix, lovely song, and may they record and play together even more.
Great cover!!! From a McMurtry fan
Same. No doubt James appreciates that she's made one of his, her own.
I like this..!
World On The Ground!!!
This is an incredible version that I can't get enough of. Thank you!
I can tell that those hammer ons and pull offs in the solo is Leventhal from a million miles away, and I like it very very much. And hats off to you Sarah, big fan!
Fabulous version of a great song!
Great tune
Wonderful cover!
