    Oftentimes, when talking about HiFi, people will agree that cheap means of poor quality. Therefore, a $25 DAC/amp that can power studio headphones up to 300 ohms while sounding great shouldn't be possible. Yet, the Play 3! from Sound Blaster is exactly that - a $25 ($19.99 on sale) USB portable DAC/amp that comes from a reputable brand and claims to be able to drive your 250 ohms Beyerdynamics or 300 ohms Sennheisers. So is there a catch? Let's find out together in this video.

    Hey, thanks for this video .... I recently bought the dt 770 pro 80 ohm version but they are not loud enough for my liking and was considering investing in behringer UM2/UMC22 to get the headphones properly powered up and enjoy a better sound overall.
    Would you recommend getting the Play 3 over an audio interface to get the best out of my headphones? My primary uses are mostly listening to electronic music and producing some as a hobby however i dont really plan to record any instruments. I am mostly just looking to get my headphones sounding the best they could at a relatively low budget since most of my budget already got used up for the headphones itself.

    • @odysseyofcuriosity
      @odysseyofcuriosity  Год назад +5

      Hey Param. Honestly, since you don't plan to record, I would tell you to get the Play 3. The UM2/UMC22 interfaces, while solid budget options overall, don't feature great headphone outs, so you won't push your headphones to their maximum potential using either. They do come with ASIO drivers for lower latencies while producing, but you can always use ASIO4ALL with the Play 3 and get a low enough latency. Hope this helps!

Got a new one, tried it out. Not even 10 minutes later, same buzzing happened. Not saying that will also happen with your device but I don't know if it's because of the 80 ohms or if the Play 4 isn't as great as it sounds. I had a bad experience in general and just returned it completely, deciding I don't want to blow my ears out and I don't need a DAC so I'm only using the small $5-10 Apple one.

    Hi Andrew, thanks for your video. I was hoping you could give me some advice. I am considering getting the beyerdynamic DT770 or DT990 at 250ohms. As a headphone amp i was initially considering the Behringer HA400 as it costs $25. Since the Play3 costs around the same, could you advise me on what the positive/negatives are for both? I plan to use this setup for producing music and eventually mastering. Thanks for the reply!

    • @odysseyofcuriosity
      @odysseyofcuriosity  11 месяцев назад +2

      Hi! I actually own both, so here's my view on them. The HA400 is a great little thing for what it does (distributing a signal to multiple listeners), and you can't really ask for more from it for the price - but its outputs aren't clean. It has got quite a bit of harmonic distortion. It's great to use when you simply want 4 people to listen to the same signal without caring too much about sound quality (when tracking a band in a studio, for example) - but for getting the most out of your headphones on a small budget, I would always pick the SB Play 3. Not to mention that you also get a DAC at that price. Hope this helps!

      I was in the same predicament as you, bought the 400se, but wasn't fully convinced and so ordered the dt 990s too. They have different strengths but I definitely prefer the clarity of the 990s, I've yet to see if amping both of them changes things and maybe the real quality of the 400se is actually bottlenecked. All the comparisons I read prefer the 400se over the dt990 but that's definitely not my experience, although I wouldn't call them bad exactly, I'm kinda underwhelmed...

    • @Arek15Arek
      @Arek15Arek Год назад

      I've changed back and forth over the last few days and got pretty used to the HE400. And now that I got a DACAMP (Sound Blaster X G6) I must say that the bottleneck is nullified and both headphones sound amazing, so it really is a matter of personal preference. Without an equalizer I may even prefer the 400SE. I think it's because I always listened to high trebble and got used to the more bassy side now...

    I wonder if there is a work around for the phone. Like and app that allows for direct USB. like how one gets the apple USB-C dongle to work. The FiiO Musci App and the HiBy Music App can use full control of the USB. Even ask when you plug an audio device "Open HiByMusic to handle +insert device name+?" with a warning that "using HiByMusic with this device might prevent hearing calls, notifications and alarms. " Which is fine if you aren't expecting any. Or if you are using your previous device as a music player.
    Icurrently use my previous phone as music player. But been an LG V40 I don't need a DAC now. But neat device to have around. Heck even as a splitter. Like, if your laptop has a single 3.5 and you need them separated. With how much some Y cables cost. Might as well get something like this.

      But keep in mind that if you have a high end motherboard, it may even have a good sound card integrated on the board. In that case it doesn't make much sense to go out and buy an external audio solution.

    Should I enable high gain if I have 250 ohm dt990 pros?

    • @odysseyofcuriosity
      @odysseyofcuriosity  8 месяцев назад

      Yes. This is not a set-in-stone rule, but if on low gain you feel the headphones aren't loud enough even with the volume slider max, then take the headphones off, slide the volume control to 20% and then enable high gain. You can then put them back on your head and slowly increase the volume until you feel they're loud enough. This will make them go much louder on max and should fix the problem. Just keep in mind to protect your hearing too (don't listen at extremely loud levels for a very long time). Hope this helps!

      Hey man, I answered this question in another comment in full detail, so I will copy-paste that answer here too. Hope you don't mind! During the test at 8:20, I used a microphone saved from a broken Cyborg Freq 5 gaming headset. It sounds surprisingly good, but unfortunately, it can't be bought on its own. Instead, you could go with a 3.5mm lapel microphone (you should be able to find a decent one starting at ~$10) - I feel that's practical, as it clips to your t-shirt, has a long wire (that can reach the Play 3) and gets pretty close to your mouth (leading to a better sound). If you don't want it clipped to you, you can also look for a 3.5mm desk microphone. Hope this helps!

  • @matomijic9933

    Wow, perfect timing! What microphone is that at 8:20 ? And is there enough room to plug both - an electric mic such as yours and the dt 770 250 Ohm headphones in the play 3 at the same time? My idea is I want to buy my first pair of hifi headphones (beyerdynamic dt 770 pro 250 ohm) and also find a workaround to use these headphones for videoconferencing / home office by adding a good quality mic such as the one you showed in the video. Would you recommend this kind of setup or should I search for a headset with an in-build mic (though they don't seen to be hifi from what I have found so far for the same price)?

    • @odysseyofcuriosity
      @odysseyofcuriosity  2 года назад +1

      You have a great plan. I would also go for the DT770 250 ohm + a separate microphone instead of a headset. And yes, you can connect the headphones + a microphone at the same time, there is enough space there. During the test at 8:20, I used a microphone saved from a broken Cyborg Freq 5 gaming headset. Yes, the Play 3 is a different beast compared to the HyperX (I'm guessing you are talking about the USB dongle that comes with their gaming headsets). I would be surprised if you can't get enough volume from it for your DT770 250 ohms. You have to make sure you install the Play 3 software and set it to run in the 300 ohms mode (it can also operate on a lower max output gain mode, to avoid frying your ears if used with low impedance, sensitive headphones - I think it defaults on that). Good luck!

    i am on a market for DT 770 pros but cant decide between the 3 ohm version, i have msi gaming laptop (ge63vr) no AMP,
    it has "ESS Sabre HiFi audio DAC, supports 24bit / 192kHz" can it run 80ohm, possibly 250 with no amp? or i should just stuck with 32ohm? Main purpose is fps gaming, yt, movies and music. I would already buy 32ohm version but i much prefere the pluchy earpads on 80 and 250 ohm version (32 version have some plastic leather ones) so i either i buy 32ohm + 25usd for earpads or 80/250ohm + 25usd for this device or maybe my laptop can handle 80ohm with no amp device...
    if you have any advice it would be much appreciated.

      Hey Danny! From my experience, most gaming laptops today are powerful enough to drive 250 ohm headphones. I never tried your MSI, but I tried some other Omen by HP laptops, some random PC's and they all did surprisingly well. Unless you demand the absolute best quality (the lowest noise floor, lowest THD, best channel separation), I can see you being happy using the DT770 250 or 80 ohms with just your laptop for your purposes. You shouldn't have major issues, even with your stock headphone out. The upgrade (better dedicated DAC + amp combo) can come later when the budget allows it, if needed. Hope this helps!

      The books will tell you to get a studio class audio interface with a proper headphone out and some high quality converters for this. This DAC is not a proper studio piece of gear. But hear me out. The books will also tell you to mix and master on reference grade monitors (not headphones) in a properly treated acoustic space using years of hands on experience and a proper ear. My point is that if you're just starting out, this doesn't really matter at all for you. Even if you'd have the perfect gear/studio, you'd be lacking other things which are arguably much more important. At this point, you just need to get your hands dirty producing some tracks, learning the fundamentals and gaining the skills which will allow you to really feel limited by this cheap DAC when paired with the DT990 Pro. Which means this $25 DAC can serve you well for now. Of course, if your budget is much larger and allows it, you can look towards something more suitable for your purposes to avoid the need for an upgrade later down the line. Hope this helps!
